drt5b7j··on Redfin Is Leaving the National Association of Realtors
If you and I bought a house together, no capital gains would be "paid". We would own an asset, which could go up in value and we could sell. Exactly the same with REITs.
drt5b7j··on John Carmack on AI
Why are you asking that? In fact, it's unclear what you're asking.
drt5b7j··on Ukraine war: Western allies say they are running out of ammunition
Thanks for this. The West has been such an embarrasingly flaky ally :-(
drt5b7j··on Cool Japan
I knew it. With the presence of anima avatars and curries everyone, this was too successful to not have been a conscious effort. TIL it has a name, thank you.

Why do you keep saying "fractional share"? All shares are fractions. You sound like a moron.

drt5b7j··on Redfin Is Leaving the National Association of Realtors
Your comment doesn't really answer my question... you just typed the same observation from the other side. You've added nothing. Zero value.

> Pacaso is a property broker that buys single-family homes and sells them to consortiums of buyers.

Why not just buy a REIT?

drt5b7j··on Mobile phones are to be banned in UK schools
While I agree with the sentiment, I think chaos is coming.

Many parents/most parents WANT their kids to always have their addictive devices at hand. I'm afraid the conflict will cause commotion and distraction for the kids who just want to go in a learn.

drt5b7j··on Ask HN: Is GenAI heading for a crypto-esque bubble pop?
The fact that you can't type this post without using so many acronyms that only insiders can read it suggests yes.
drt5b7j··on The presumption that computers are working correctly
It's appears to you this way because you're an insider in software. If you were in hardware, you would believe the opposite.

I didn't know this. I'm in shock right now. I already knew that "America bad" was a blind spot for him, but this is another level.
drt5b7j··on Richard Stallman reveals he has cancer in the GNU 40 Hacker Meeting talk [video]
> Besides, it was in Europe. Us Europeans do not have the same epidermic reaction to communism that Americans have.

You're just making it worse and worse. I'm also European. I'm guessing you're Western European though? I'm also guessing your country wasn't under soviet occupation for 50 years? Eastern Europeans very much do have a bad allergic reaction to communism, just like Americans, and just like everyone else who came in contact with it. Che was at best a useful idiot.

Of course the person with T-shirt is sympathetic to communism and RMS, but their sympathy to RMS is very superficial. Otherwise they would know that RMS wouldn't approve. So it's option 2 I guess.
drt5b7j··on Richard Stallman reveals he has cancer in the GNU 40 Hacker Meeting talk [video]
A) A picture of che Guevara is always an association with communism

B) RMS is very well known as someone who is, amongst other things, not a communist.

Frankly I fail to see how this could be taken as anything other than a provocation. Why would you have a picture of RMS as Che and then ask him to sign it? The only other explanation I can think of is you're too stupid to not see A or B.

drt5b7j··on Richard Stallman reveals he has cancer in the GNU 40 Hacker Meeting talk [video]
I mean I would've been a lot more rude. It's hard to not take that as an intentional provocation.

Found the answer, saved you having to read the whole thing

> Businesses should keep adding engineers to work on optimization until the cost of adding an engineer equals the revenue gain plus the cost savings at the margin. This is often many more engineers than people realize.

But it's well written, do read it.

Do you think the "software engineering" people are giving engineering a bad name?

"Christian scientists" are Christians who attach themselves to the word science because science has such a powerful reputation. In their case I'm not worried about their trickery because everyone recognizes this. Everyone knows that Christian scientists are not scientists.

With software engineering it's not as clear. It's possible to create software applying engineering principles, but that's not what 99%+ of what is called "software engineering" is. And because most people don't recognize this, I think eventually this might run off "engineering".

drt5b7j··on UK considers banning cigarettes for next generation
Prediction: if this happens, tobacco prices will go up and someone will start trafficking it. That'll be illegal, police will fight it, they'll use their revenues to fight off the police.
