dshpala··on I Programed the Most Productive macOS Keyboard Setup [video]
Pretty cool, but notice how he still uses touchpad to move through the source code.

Any ideas on how to automate that? I guess I can page up/down with a keyboard, but then how do I move cursor to a specific part of the code?

dshpala··on BASE TTS: The largest text-to-speech model to-date
I think Google's product has that: https://play.google.com/books/publish/autonarrated/
dshpala··on Men are going to brutal boot camps to reclaim their masculinity
Sounds like fun! Although I'd prefer to build something, like a barn or a house.
dshpala··on Feynman: I am burned out and I'll never accomplish anything (1985)
I remember I used to kick-start myself into flow by doing "useless" things like rearranging code around, doing small renames for consistency, etc.

I need to return that that practice, as I find it harder and harder to interest myself in what I'm doing...

dshpala··on With 0-days hitting Chrome, iOS, and many more this month, is no software safe?
... except for software written in Rust, obviously.
dshpala··on I Fired Myself
How can one become better at office politics? What are books to read / courses to take?
dshpala··on Why Your Life Is Stagnant and You’re Not Making Any Progress (and How to Fix It)
My realization from that article is that I'm stagnant because I can't be wordy.

It's all very simply for me. Either I know something or I don't. If I know, I tell exactly what I know. If I don't I say "I don't know".

But sometimes it's useful to be like the author, and be able to pull sentences and paragraphs out of nothing. I have coworkers like that, and they sound smart. They frequently get their way because no one sane can listen minutes-long elaborations of the simplest of points. People get bored, and say "yes" just to run away. No one questions these guys, since no one wants to swim in the pool of their rhetoric again.

This is what the author should be teaching about. The article is shit otherwise.

dshpala··on Fox News Settles Defamation Suit for $787.5M
I feel that NYT should stop paywalling articles about Fox. That would be a good for educating public about them.

Right now all I have is a vague title. But I bet if I go to the Fox I'll be able to freely read their position.

dshpala··on We need a more sophisticated debate about AI
There is no way to estimate "probable consequences", as it all is happening very fast.

Which hints on the fact how interesting / in demand this technology is.

I for one will be happy to enslave an AGI if that makes my life easier / better.

dshpala··on How did Dennis Ritchie produce his PhD thesis? A typographical mystery (2022) [pdf]
This is one of those cases where I can't help myself but ask: Why couldn't you find more worthwhile thing to do?
dshpala··on Ok, it’s time to freak out about AI
Now would be the time for some adversary (e.g. Russia) to provide unfiltered GPT-4 like thing, for free. Or even better, with a pro-Russia (or pro-China) bias.
dshpala··on Ex-CNN President Jeff Zucker Ordered Staff to Ignore Lab-Leak Theory
Well, it's pretty popular in America.
dshpala··on Tesla recalls 360k vehicles, says full self-driving beta may cause crashes
You'd be surprised how many people want a one-way ticket to Mars. I think Elon can make good money from that alone.
dshpala··on Ruff: A fast Python linter, written in Rust
"An fast"? Shouldn't this be "A fast", or is it an exception of some sort?
dshpala··on Servo’s New Home (2020)
I wonder how hard it'll be to implement Android's WebView on top of Servo?
dshpala··on Should I step down as head of Twitter? I will abide by the results of this poll
How can anyone, in 2022, still have this utopian vision about open social media? There will always be another "arrogant buffoon" to ruin it for you. It's more productive to change your attitude.
dshpala··on Engineers Who Are Jerks
What is "hard to deal with"?

I definitely can be hard to deal with if you try to run BS by me. Things like unnecessary refactors for example really rub me the wrong way.

I think that sometimes hard NO is the only right answer. "No, we don't need to do this, it's unnecessary, it can introduce bugs, and it wastes reviewers time. Not LGTM". I can see how this can be seen as "abrasive" and "hard to deal with". But sometimes swallowing your ego and abandoning a change is the right answer.

dshpala··on If you (still) work at Twitter and you can code, head to the HQ now
I like the spirit of that though. Reminds me my startup days.
dshpala··on If you (still) work at Twitter and you can code, head to the HQ now
That would be nice. I know a senior developer that doesn't actually do anything, he had like 2 small CLs this year. But apparently he can't be fired, so he is just there, increasing work load for everyone else.
dshpala··on Twitter Android app dev fired: Guess it's official now.
I wonder how soon Twitter will have to crank the compensation up because no one wants to work there.
dshpala··on Accidental Google Pixel Lock Screen Bypass
And of course fix includes magic SecurityMode.Invalid value, which makes dismiss() behave like it did before.

I'd look very hard at places that use SecurityMode.Invalid.

dshpala··on Just don’t
I don't mind receiving "just", in my view "what do you think" is far worse.

You can just brush "just" away (which is kind of expected), but "what do you think" implies some kind of reasoned answer. Which then can be debated, even if the original idea was bogus from the start.

dshpala··on Twitter Blue for $8/Month
I'll take those silly doors any day over some designed-by-committe boring car. Like stupid bean-shaped electric Mercedes for example.
dshpala··on Google is shutting down Stadia
Disrespectful is interpreting words in bad faith. Obviously OP didn't literally mean 1 month.
dshpala··on San Francisco decriminalizes psychedelics
Similar safety profiles? I'm not a drinker, but I think you need to drink a LOT of alcohol to state hallucinating? I.e. most people don't do that.
dshpala··on Observations from our Joe Rogan Experience experience
There are people that don't let a single mistake sink a person. Yes that episode is bad and leaves bad taste, but everyone makes mistakes.

So yeah, I like Joe Rogan, and I'm fine with associating my brand with him. But if you know rising podcast stars like him - please share.

dshpala··on Increased wind turbine rotor blade visibility to reduce avian fatalities
Some might see such dismissals (of "useless" proposals) as a marker of a focus and honesty, and thus give the author of the competing proposal more attention.
dshpala··on The Big [Censored] Theory
Oh hey, they've added a couple more chars since the last time I encountered the term! Now we just need to rearrange the letters to make pronounceable, how about QBIG2SALT+?
dshpala··on Win32 Is the Only Stable ABI on Linux?
Speaking about consensus - there is another thread on the HN where people complain about Android 13 UI. I guess that was built with a healthy dose of consensus.

The point is - sometimes you need a jerk with a vision so that the thing you're building don't turn into amorphous blob.

dshpala··on SpaceX said to fire employees involved in letter rebuking Elon Musk
The open letter wanted to “publicly address and condemn Elon’s harmful Twitter behavior”.

It's only a small step until these activists start demanding similar things regarding random public people they don't like. Like DeSantis. Surely any sane leadership would condemn DeSantis' harmful behavior?

I hope firings will continue until this kind of activism subsides.
