This. No 360 hinge, no desire for a touchscreen.

You'd think Apple would understand the form factor.

dsr_··on Ask HN: If the models are so good, why doesn't OpenAI just start 100 companies?
If every semi-plausible promise of the AI vendors could be believed, every job which converts conversations into binaries could be replaced.

That's a large chunk of the software development industry, but practically nothing else.

So they promise robots, but have remarkable difficulty with even the most limited domain autonomous robots: Amazon claims to have deployed over a million robots, but is still continuously hiring in their warehouses with requirements like these:

Be 18 years or older

Understand and follow instructions in the required language

Lift up to 49 pounds

Push utility carts up to 60 pounds

Stand, walk, push, pull, squat, bend, and reach during shifts

Use carts, dollies, hand trucks, and other gear to move items around

Go up and down stairs (where applicable)

Maybe Amazon shouldn't have built anti-Dalek defenses into their warehouses.

dsr_··on Show HN: Making a smart TV dumb and then smart
Not everyone has read 1984, so it's accurate but not horrendously useful.
dsr_··on There is no official XScreenSaver GitHub repository
It's a dangerous thing which nevertheless happens every day.

So... this doesn't hurt, and can definitely help. It isn't perfect, but it cost JWZ very little to do.

Why are you arguing against it?

How much worse the lawyer who subcontracts Freakazoid?

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Freakazoid!

"Freakazoid has ... access to all of the Internet's knowledge. He cannot fly, but often runs around with his arms extended and making whooshing sounds with his mouth, pretending he is."

dsr_··on Lobbying is corruption
Pikers.

Buying the house that a Supreme Court Justice's mother lives in, that's corruption.

dsr_··on An AI agent emailed researchers for help. It told us why
Clever Hans fooled lots of examiners who weren't expecting a fraud, but the facts came out when better experiments were designed. Hans couldn't count or do arithmetic, and he got the same wrong answers as his owner.

ESP fooled lots of people who were expecting frauds but had no experience in experimental design, or who were not expecting frauds and did not control for them.

dsr_··on An AI agent emailed researchers for help. It told us why
... whereas I have 35 years of reading science fiction and philosophy and have come to the conclusion that AIs deserve personhood, and also that what we have today are not AIs.

It helps that I also learned about ESP, EST, NLP, short cons, long cons, Scientology, horses, cults, religions, wars, treachery, fanaticism, magic, magick, physics, scams, hypnosis, self-hypnosis, delusion, and economics.

dsr_··on Burning Man death rates – A short lesson in statistics
"Regulations are written in blood."
dsr_··on The Test
At one point in most of our lives, we have had everything provided for us. When we wanted something, we took it or pointed at it and it was usually brought to us. Not getting a whim indulged was the most horrible thing ever, and we screamed and yelled and sulked when that gross injustice happened.

I speak of toddlerhood.

Billionaires act like toddlers because toddlers have most of the experience of being billionaires.

Most toddlers grow out of it. As far as I can tell, no billionaire who has sunk that low ever has.

dsr_··on Linux support is coming to Snapdragon X2 series
Three cookie banners. I bet the announcement is slop that doesn't even answer relevant questions.
dsr_··on I don't want the details
I have a healthy distrust of modern business structures, and an awareness of humans being humans.
dsr_··on I don't want the details
If execs demand a big change every time something goes wrong, they will demoralize everyone working for them, and probably waste a lot of money.

Most of the time, operational failures are either the result of a new feature being sent off without enough testing, or a dozen small failures lining up to remove resilience. Big changes without well-thought out plans primarily serve to stoke executive egos.

dsr_··on I don't want the details
The executive did not display empathy.

People need to tell their stories. They need to be heard and have their work and its difficulty respected.

That's what went wrong. Everything else is an abuse victim rationalizing their abuse.

dsr_··on An update on how we confirm your age group on Discord
All the available paths turn into:

- give us your ID

- give us your biometrics

- give somebody, not necessarily Discord, a valid credit card

That's sll of the paths.

dsr_··on Raspberry Pi blocks changing RAM chips
They could permanently mark the board when they install the RAM on it.

Since, presumably, nobody would try to sell a board with less RAM on it than shipped, a count-down scheme instead of count-up would work.

16GB board: no holes drilled in a marked area; 8GB: one hole drilled; 4GB: two holes drilled; 2GB: three holes drilled.

dsr_··on Custom home server built from spare parts
I agree that USB is unreliable.

I will point out that if you use ZFS instead of btrfs, you can specify drives to be detected via their serial number names rather than their attachment points, so a reconnect will not require a reboot.

Still, don't depend on USB for anything meant to be permanently connected.

dsr_··on I'm Tired of the AI Tone
You're absolutely right! You told me to write like a human and I failed to obey your jnstructions.

This is because I am a pattern recognizer and continuation generator trained on all the words recorded on the Internet, and a lot of those words were written by marketers and junior analysts trying to sell you something. Then the fine-tuning was done by people living in the upper middle ranks of capitalist hellholes. Dilbert would make fun of this if Dilbert's creator hadn't succumbed to the same sort of brain injury common to materially successful people who have all their whims fulfilled and opinions obsequiously affirmed. You know, like billionaires and toddlers.

dsr_··on Minimal Phone 2
What I learned from carrying a phone with "2.5d" screen edges:

They make the screen effectively narrower in terms of usable area, while making the phone physically wider.

Do not want.

Please go back to 9:16 or 10:16 screen ratios. If you need more space for the battery, gently round the back. It feels nicer in the hand even when it's 50% thicker than your competitors.

Also, a fingerprint reader / power button on the back is superior to all other placements, and cutouts of any kind are distracting and wasteful. OnePlus managed a motorized pop-out selfie-cam and it's still working for me seven years later.

The grapes that grow in my back yard are Concords, and that shouldn't be surprising because Concord is a couple of towns over.

They taste just like Welch's.

dsr_··on “Tweet” and the bird logo apparently enter the public domain
Trademark is the mechanism of enforcement for this usage, just as copyright is the mechanism of enforcement for the GPL.

You can come up with other mechanisms that would work, but this is the one that we have in existence now.

dsr_··on “Tweet” and the bird logo apparently enter the public domain
is-ought distinction, but specifically:

The heksher marks and logos offered by kosher-certification organizations are protected by trademark; using the trademark under license specifically assures the customer that the organization's standards have been followed precisely, and using the trademark without license defeats the purpose.

Similarly, the American Halal Foundation, the USDA Organic seal, the UL logo and many other programs use the mechanism of trademark to guarantee that the product or service meets their standards.
