dtgriscom··on Root shell on Samsung TV
A perhaps relevant "Clean Your TV" project (although it doesn't work for Samsung): https://github.com/Gathin23/cleanyourtv
dtgriscom··on Root shell on Samsung TV
True, but they're MUCH more expensive. For example, the lowest-end 43" this company sells for a little over $2000; you can find ones on Amazon for a tenth the price. Yes, a lot of that is the industrial quality, but some of it is the spy/adware subsidization.
dtgriscom··on Root shell on Samsung TV
This is the answer. Lots of people (myself included) are happy to buy a big, cheap TV, but it's cheap because the manufacturer gets money by paid app placement, ads (sometimes), and selling information about you.

A senior friend has bad vision, so I recommended an inexpensive but enormous TV that they can use as a display, and never let it connect to the network. Unfortunately, every few months the display tries to coax them into connecting to WiFi, and it confuses the heck out of them. But, that's the game.

dtgriscom··on Show HN: High-quality duck audio synthesizer
I have a vivid memory of camp (8 years old?) where the counselor took us to a pond and we went fishing using bread for bait. Instead of fish, we caught ducks. Not good.
dtgriscom··on Things to know when you get cancer
"Never go to sea with two chronometers; take one or three."
dtgriscom··on Reading’s Bayeux Tapestry
I saw this. It was done by Victorian embroiderers, and was amazing, but the part I remember is one of the incidental characters. In the original, he was quite conspicuously nude; in the reproduction he was given a pair of shorts.
dtgriscom··on Fixing the Portobello Police Station Clock
There's a Reddit user who posts in a car repair subreddit about his work repairing bell-tower equipment. Very cool.

dtgriscom··on Low-Tech Ceramic Water Filter
At what voltage? (I understand Brazil has districts with both 127V and 220V mains.)

dtgriscom··on Decades-old fish sauce at abandoned factory in Canada finally being removed
I live near Boston, and every winter the city needs to deal with tons and tons of snow removed from the streets. The easiest solution is to dump it in Boston Harbor, but the Massachusetts Department of Environmental Protection banned that in 1997 (as part of cleaning up the Harbor). The solution: pile the snow up in vacant lots and let it melt into the Harbor. What's the difference? Dunno...
dtgriscom··on How we can reduce traffic congestion
Traffic apps only know about congestion if someone running the app goes down the congested road. Because of this, I've always suspected that the apps, from time to time, will route someone down a route they haven't gathered data on in a while, just to collect the data, and even if the route is likely to be suboptimal.
dtgriscom··on Scientist who cleaned space toilet on work now leading Mars exploration
I agree: clickbait. She unpacked the toilet; I doubt it was anything like what you or I would think of as "cleaning a toilet."
dtgriscom··on If you're a button, you have one job
Lots of replies with good ideas here. The biggest question is that EMI resistance; do you really need to ignore brief closures? In the vast majority of situations, the answer is no.
dtgriscom··on The bottleneck might be the air in the room
I think this is (in turn) wrong. Yes: having 500x the amount of O2 as CO2 means that a 10% drop in O2 will trigger 500x as many molecules diffusing in per second as the same drop in CO2. But, each molecule of CO2 will change the relative percentage 500x as much as a molecule of O2, so isn't it a wash?
dtgriscom··on Performance per dollar is getting faster and cheaper
Agreed. The writer is pretty loose with their comparisons:

* What does it mean for "performance per dollar" to get faster? Higher, maybe; rise faster than it has in the past, maybe, but just "faster"? Nope.

* The article cites some equipment as being "2x cheaper". I think they mean "half the cost", but if so they should say it.

dtgriscom··on 24-bit/192kHz music downloads and why they make no sense (2012)
> I absolutely prefer anything with classic instruments (Jazz, Classical) in higher-quality formats

High-dynamic-range material benefits from lots of bits.

dtgriscom··on The case for physical media ownership
I have about 2500 CDs in my garage, with all of them ripped to my laptop. I'll never lose access to them. (My only regret is that I can't look through the jewel case covers and booklets.)
dtgriscom··on Granularity comes at a cost
Yes, but note that your cited article doesn't talk about "more granular" or "less granular"; it talks about "fine-grained" and "coarse-grained".
dtgriscom··on Granularity comes at a cost
I hate the use of "granular" in a relative context. If water is not granular, and ice cubes are granular, what does it mean for some ice cubes to be more granular than other ice cubes? Are the cubes in question larger or smaller?
dtgriscom··on S&P 500 rejects SpaceX, also blocking entry for OpenAI and Anthropic
"Denied Fast Index Entry" is a much more honest title than "Rejects SpaceX", which is just click-bait.
dtgriscom··on Ask HN: What was your "oh shit" moment with GenAI?
He said that it got a few resistor values wrong, but other than that it was correct. I assume it was actually a single-layer board. (Nobody's doing this with a mini-ITX motherboard.)
dtgriscom··on Ask HN: What was your "oh shit" moment with GenAI?
A friend had the power supply die on his high-end turntable. He took a picture of each side of the supply's PCB, handed it to Claude, and it gave him back a schematic.
dtgriscom··on Meteor Explodes over Massachusetts
The day was somewhat stormy. I was in my kitchen in my north-suburban-Boston house, when I suddenly heard a BOOM. I thought it was a very large branch falling on my house, so I ran outside to check out the roof. Saw nothing, and only later heard about the meteor.
dtgriscom··on What appear to be biochemical processes may be a natural feature of geology

"Ah... is he. Is he."

dtgriscom··on I hate soldering
I have a Donegan DA-5 OptiVisor Headband Magnifier. They're nice, because the lenses are prism'd so that you can focus on something close without having to go cross-eyed.
dtgriscom··on The greatest shot in television: James Burke had one chance to nail this scene (2024)
We watched all of The Ascent of Man in middle school. The only thing I remember is that when the narrator, Jacob Bronowski, gestured with the back of his hand (fingers up), he always tucked his middle finger behind his ring and index finger. I assume this was so that he wouldn't "give the finger" to the audience.

(I've been wasting neurons on this for fifty years...)

dtgriscom··on The greatest shot in television: James Burke had one chance to nail this scene (2024)
Cheap insurance.
dtgriscom··on Empty Screenings – Finds AMC movie screenings with few or no tickets sold
I saw the first Star Wars movie on the day it opened in Boston, in an enormous, packed theater. I will never forget the roar that went up when Han Solo came out of the sun to save Luke.
dtgriscom··on Why has there been so little progress on Alzheimer's disease?
Yeah; they had a wonderful earthiness to their language; both highly technical and highly vivid. Like this comment on hexanitroisowurtzitane:

> Recall that this is the compound whose cocrystal with TNT is actually less dangerous than the pure starting material itself, and yeah, I know that sounds like the guy at the pet store packing a starved Komodo dragon into the carrier with your new dog, just to calm him down some.

I'm guessing he just ran out of nasty chemicals. Either that, or he got tired of it and followed his muse elsewhere.

dtgriscom··on Why has there been so little progress on Alzheimer's disease?
> Edit: Google the in the pipeline blog. This and other have discussed this at length.
