duked··on How much money a single person needs to earn to get by in every U.S. state
I'm not sure how they came up with these numbers but I live in VA and the housing cost seems unrealistic for many cities (not just talking about NOVA).
duked··on A follow up to Coinbase being a mission focused company
I also want to share that I paid for COBRA $1,660 a month for for my family coverage (spouse + 2 kids) so $400 is probably not true in many cases even if single it seems really a low estimate
duked··on Ask HN: How do you restrict the amount of screen time for kids?
I'm also interested as I just started looking into it for my kids. Right now, they only have access to 1h/day max of screen time. I take the ipad and put it in kiosk mode with one app only (ABCs/Reading/Math) and I pick it up after 30mins and redo the same setup with youtube for kids (they watch 15mins) and again another time where they pick a moderately educational game and that's my routine. I think there must be an app where I can select which apps are allowed and how much time so I don't have to use a timer and give them a sense of "freedom" haha.
duked··on Radeon Open Compute 3.0
would this help in running tensorflow on the latest MBP 16 ? If so any guide out there, the documentation is not super helpful
duked··on Implementing a Convolutional Neural Network from Scratch in Python
This is a great tutorial. However, every time I see RNN/CNN it's always applied to some video stream or set of images. I really would like to find some tutorial but applied to event logs or other text-based input. Anyone has a good link for that?
duked··on ESA Space CyberSecurity Call for Ideas
Interesting but I wonder about the volume of submissions they will receive. Since the outcome is very vague in terms of potential business: "Ideas that meet the evaluation criteria of this call - in consultation with the proposers of the ideas - will be considered for the preparation of technology development activity proposals."

If you are in this line of work, I think people would rather spend their time to respond to an RFP.

duked··on Ask HN: Best place to sell a web app?
The usual places are: http://flippa.com/, http://empireflippers.com/ or https://feinternational.com.

I've also just posted something on HN: https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=19781447

duked··on I Beat an Online Course Scammer
I agree, the guy sounds like someone really arrogant and while what happened is totally wrong it is really hard to feel any empathy towards him :/
duked··on Cartography: Graph view of infrastructure assets and relationships between them
We're building something very security oriented if you'd like to try and give your feedback (contact@cloudhawk.io) ? Thanks for mentioning Jupiter one we've never heard of it but interesting product !
duked··on Cartography: Graph view of infrastructure assets and relationships between them
I'm working on something related to security too. I would love to connect but no email on your profile.
duked··on About V, the language Volt is written in
the Mac client is available but Skype support is tomorrow :/
duked··on About V, the language Volt is written in
I will for sure. Their latest client is just too hostile.
duked··on About V, the language Volt is written in
I really would love an alternative to the horrible Skype client but I doubt it. AFAIK, you can't make your own unless things have changed ?
duked··on I wrote a negative Yelp review and it made my life a nightmare
I just went on their yelp page and was noticed a huge spike in negative review (talk about the streisand effect...). but what surprised me was the yelp notification: "Active Cleanup Alert

This business recently made waves in the news, which often means that people come to this page to post their views on the news.

While we don’t take a stand one way or the other when it comes to these news events, we do work to remove both positive and negative posts that appear to be motivated more by the news coverage itself than the reviewer’s personal consumer experience with the business.

As a result, your posts to this page may be removed as part of our cleanup process beginning Tuesday, May 29, 2018, but you should feel free to post your thoughts about the recent media coverage for this business on Yelp Talk at any time. "

So is it like the news coverage never happened ? seems kind of disingenuous to remove everything during that period (whatever time frame they will decide on is interesting too)

duked··on GitHub accidentally writes clear text user passwords to logs
I got the exact same email a second ago :/
duked··on Ask HN: How to find developers with NO SKILLs to work for me?
do you have an email where I can reach out ?
duked··on Secret Backdoor in Some U.S. Phones Sent Data to China, Analysts Say
Hi, our findings are specific to the BLU R1HD. What you can do is have man in the middle proxy for your device and look at the traffic. Funny enough we actually bought the R1HD for the same reason as you... We had a conference in Taiwan and wanted a burner and BLU looked awesome for the price ;)
duked··on Secret Backdoor in Some U.S. Phones Sent Data to China, Analysts Say
We did work with DHS and notify all the parties ahead of the press release. We also remember carrierIQ ! We have a comparison table here: http://www.kryptowire.com/adups_security_analysis.html
duked··on Secret Backdoor in Some U.S. Phones Sent Data to China, Analysts Say
The thing is these are system apps so not easy to analyze unless you're root. What you can do is use observe your device traffic and see if any of these domains are pinged:

    bigdata.adups.com (primary)
    bigdata.adsunflower.com
    bigdata.adfuture.cn
    bigdata.advmob.cn
Then check the content of the POST request (usually to url/mobileupload.do )
duked··on Secret Backdoor in Some U.S. Phones Sent Data to China, Analysts Say
Not sure about our policy for sharing the report but we have a slightly more technical version on our blog: http://www.kryptowire.com/adups_security_analysis.html

H guys, I'm one of the researchers with kryptowire if you have any questions
duked··on I’m Joining Stripe to Work on Atlas
I'm happy for Patrick.

I have to say, to me the downfall of starfighter was predictable. I LOVED microcorruption it was something I could get in fairly quickly and enjoy. But starfighter was requiring too much commitment to get the basics of operation and if I'm looking for a job I'd rather invest that time into brushing up my algorithms (since that's the hiring criteria these days...) rather than reading some background to play a "game" to eventually beat challenges and maybe get a job interview :/

duked··on Ask HN: What amazing successes started with a “Show HN”?
I'd like to think that Show HN is "life changing".

I'm not sure if it's true but I would be interested in people who did a Show HN and see what happened in terms of traffic/connections/outreach etc...

duked··on Vizceral Open Source
Not a project but we're building product that does that and more https://www.cloudhawk.io

duked··on Our sons' student debt is delaying our retirement
I don't want to be harsh but the reality is either you can afford to try a very hard path such as "bachelor's degree in journalism and media studies." where it seems competencies don't really matter or you push your kids to study something where the odds of finding a jobs are higher.

Unfortunately it seems like, journalism, acting, professional sports is not about talent but about who you meet and when :/

May be I'm a pessimist but that's how I feel about certain jobs/career paths.

duked··on Show HN: CodeUpStart – Learn Python/Flask by Cloning Kickstarter
I like tutorial but I'm personally not fond of videos. I would enjoy the tutorial if it was a simple html page or even a pdf.

Is it just me? Or most people prefer videos ?
