dunefox··on We're releasing the weights of Mistral Large 4
IME excessively quantised models are almost unusable. I've had better quality from non-quantised, smaller models.

Except he never did get bad grades.

Now if only they could fix their website: last year I tried to sign up for a paid plan and I couldn't activate it using my phone number, since my phone number had been used for another account - after deleting the phone number from the other account it didn't work, neither did it after the other account itself.
dunefox··on Ask HN: Who is hiring? (September 2026)
This is "Who is hiring"... you're not hiring.
dunefox··on I'm going back to coding by hand
Also, I'm checking all generated code, have tests, and have developed a concept that increases code correctness reliably. It works - as good or bad that fact might be.
dunefox··on Desert Ant Labs: local, fast models that run on device
> Everyone wants to be paid forever for something they produced once is some kind of a mind virus.

Then make a better chair yourself. Also, I don't see how chair2 needs r&d and incurs hardware costs.

I'm very certain you have used lots of software, either directly or indirectly, that has ai parts in it. The truth is, that it's quite reliable if done correctly. As if 'human written' software is somehow flawless.

I'm sure you can run an IDE on EmacsOS.
dunefox··on Larger Pacific striped octopus
Somebody? Why not you?
dunefox··on I'm going back to coding by hand
Honestly, this is less of a problem with LLMs than with some colleagues I've had.
dunefox··on I'm going back to coding by hand
Not using an IDE in 2026?
dunefox··on I'm going back to coding by hand
I'm not. I just don't want to implement code for reading files, setting up and population databases, logs, etc. manually anymore. I want to automate boilerplate, the occasional frontend code, etc. and focus on the parts that are interesting for me. This way I can get things done that I wouldn't otherwise.
dunefox··on How an MIT research project became the Julia programming language
Wait, code of the programming language is now vibe coded?
dunefox··on How an MIT research project became the Julia programming language
It really isn't very helpful, as many of the issues are either obsolete or exaggerated.
dunefox··on "Famous Deep Learning Papers", David Bau
Feels a bit too sparse.
dunefox··on AWS Acquires DuckDB
Wouldn't be the worst thing, when I last used it, I got some c++ specific errors.
dunefox··on Pg_lake: Postgres with Iceberg and data lake access
It's a python data frame.
dunefox··on Device enabling dogs to form sentences
Dogs get conditioned to press buttons, humans fill in the blanks and believe dogs can speak using human words. Great business idea.

dunefox··on The elegance of movement in Silksong
I can't play dark souls and eden ring without a fov mod, so I can't go online and summon if a boss gets too difficult. Sadly pointless for me.
dunefox··on Like humans, every tree has its own microbiome, a new study has found
Entangled life by Merlin Sheldrake shows how, amongst many other amazing facts, tightly integrated mushrooms and trees are. Everything about this is amazing to me.
dunefox··on ML needs a new programming language – Interview with Chris Lattner
Shouldn't something like this work? https://github.com/JuliaPy/PythonCall.jl
dunefox··on Wild pigs' flesh turning neon blue in California
Which national anthem? Does it have to be the national anthem, or do other songs work as well?

> No good pictures

There are several good pictures...

dunefox··on SCP-055 is an "antimeme" – it erases itself from memory when observed
It drops off quite quickly after the first half. I almost didn't finish it.
dunefox··on Show HN: Shoggoth Mini – A soft tentacle robot powered by GPT-4o and RL
A Lovecraft reference, nice. I'm wondering whether a smaller model would suffice as well.
dunefox··on Archaeologists unveil 3,500-year-old city in Peru
You're linking to random twitter posts, with one of them mentioning a random reddit user with "throwaway" in his name, but "Skepticism has turned into a religion"? Please link to any credible source, just one.

> Every university in the world has (if it doesn't, it's not a university) maths as a minor regardless of what your major is.

That's just not true.

dunefox··on The Art of Lisp and Writing (2003)
Yes, because that's not an issue with Lisp and therefore irrelevant for the comparison between Lisp and other languages.
