Ah. First time I've seen either.
duskdozer··on Study: Schoolwide phone bans show no significant impact on mental health
s/children/people/

I keep seeing this crop up in the id verification discussions. The same psychological processes that social media companies exploit in children exist in adults and have the same result. The problem isn't manipulating children, it's that they're manipulating everyone.

duskdozer··on elect.horse
Seems like it, though this has a second puzzle with three candidates instead of two
duskdozer··on Why is this fingerprinting script creating bioweapons?
I always assumed people were writing in LLMese themselves to mock it, not generating it.
duskdozer··on We won't "just hang out"
He's clearly contrasting meeting people due to asking them questions or discussing a hobby/task versus using LLMs:

>As a teenager I tried to install Linux, ran into all kinds of problems, and went on the IRC chatrooms to get help. And in the process I made friends. Today, I would just ask Claude.

It could have been "repair my car" and "car forums" or "learn to knit" and "Reddit"

And further, he's saying that the dependence will diminish that life beyond computers:

>The people in the AI utopia will have no skills, no education, no accomplishments. We’ll be lucky if they are even literate. They will not be worth talking to, and you won’t want to hang out with them.

duskdozer··on StackOverflow now gets fewer than 1000 questions a month
Can't see your link because it requires a google sign-in. But anecdotally earlier this year I stopped being able to visit SO due to cloudflare, whether it was enabling it at all or increasing its hostility level. Maybe they received a lot of bot traffic leading to this?
duskdozer··on Evidence of a spying operation by ICE against left-wing social movements
Hacker News is a left-wing echo chamber?
duskdozer··on Kentucky man becomes the first humanist granted religious exemption from AI
>human agents

What? Are you trying to say "people"?

duskdozer··on Here be monsters: What do you still need to know when agents do the work?
Why use a crusty old linter when you can be AI-Native and 100x your load-bearing file formatting by orchestrating AI to do it? Do you want be left behind in the dust?
duskdozer··on An examination of lost firefly species of the US and Canada
I wish it was just raking at this point. The only person I've seen raking in many years is my 90+ year-old neighbor. Everyone else has the backpack leafblower SWAT teams.
duskdozer··on Early progress on accelerating drug development with Claude
I'm not sure I'd say voting with mush for brains is a feature exclusive to the elderly (:
duskdozer··on Survival LLM: AI assistant and emergency library that runs on your own computer
The summarization is the main issue here. A fuzzy search is far less controversial. The LLM companies have done a good job synonymizing "AI" with their products however.
duskdozer··on Google illegally cut down 250K trees in Finland for data center
Overall opposition is at 70%, and opposition of "MAGA supporters" and Republican men is around 55% (~45% support). It's a difference but it's not like many issues where these numbers could be opposing 90/10s in these groups.
duskdozer··on AI-Assisted Paper on Z-Library Cites a TorrentFreak Article That Doesn't Exist
I'm not sure that that is an obvious claim these days, with the whole "agents going rogue" press releases.
duskdozer··on Bringing uv and ty together
Maybe? I still don't really fully understand what issues people had with it unless they'd only ever used the system python installation for everything.
duskdozer··on Google illegally cut down 250K trees in Finland for data center
>By a 40-point margin, voters oppose building data centers in their area to support artificial intelligence (30% favor, 70% oppose).

>MAGA supporters (46% favor) and Republican men (45%) are the groups most likely to favor data centers, while White women with a college degree (84% oppose) and liberal voters (80%) are the most opposed.

Would Fox News have reason to overestimate rightist opposition here?

duskdozer··on AI-Assisted Paper on Z-Library Cites a TorrentFreak Article That Doesn't Exist
So the type and content of what fiction I write should be controlled so that LLM companies may choose for the sake of maximum profit to haphazardly collect any data they please and to neglect the safety and validity of the content they choose to serve users?
duskdozer··on AI-Assisted Paper on Z-Library Cites a TorrentFreak Article That Doesn't Exist
On the contrary, I'm saying is that it's not okay that the world becomes worse-off, as long as it's not [the LLM companies'] fault. If it means they don't have a viable business model by only ingesting data that they have permission for and is verified, and by being held fully responsible for the content they serve their users - in order to prevent the world from becoming worse-off - then they should not operate.
duskdozer··on AI-Assisted Paper on Z-Library Cites a TorrentFreak Article That Doesn't Exist
If I write a story that includes a character mixing bleach and ammonia for curing asthma and publish it on my website, am I responsible for an LLM company ingesting my story without contact or my consent and then at some point in the future providing a user instructions to mix bleach and ammonia for curing asthma?
duskdozer··on A practical guide to AI image generation, from diffusion to agents
When your work depends on people using online LLM services, you probably don't want to encourage people to use their own hardware.
duskdozer··on Bringing uv and ty together
It's not something I really relate to, having working on a fairly large project with significant dependencies that is used as both a library and an application. I see uv often used just to try to paper over bad dependency and compatibility management, which ends up being self-reinforcing. I guess if it's being used strictly for final deployment, sure, but that doesn't (shouldn't) remove the need to pay attention. It's hard for me to see it as anything but an attempt to eventually make the state of Python tooling be "everything breaks, unless you use uv by Astral™"
duskdozer··on Bringing uv and ty together
This shouldn't be surprising. Astral has wanted to create lock-in with uv for years and obviously they'll want to bring everyone into their "ecosystem" as much as possible. Stand by for more divergences from main python or use of their "market" capture for leverage over it.
duskdozer··on Claude Duet
A source for what exactly? I've seen others but here are a couple random repos I found just searching now which look to do these things:

- https://github.com/jere-mie/unslop (why not just use tr? who knows)

duskdozer··on Claude Duet
How do tokens and copyright things play into this? I don't really understand. You can just pipe the audio straight from yt-dlp into whisper and it just transcribes it directly.
duskdozer··on mitmproxy adds --emudhra option
Oh wow. Do people think they got it from xkcd?
duskdozer··on Claude Duet
Why not just use a script with yt-dlp and whisper?
duskdozer··on Claude Duet
You'd end up needing to click through pages more, but it's trivial to write a ublock filter for whatever keywords you don't want.
duskdozer··on Claude Duet
He's supposedly trying to buy a house with an LLM without knowing any of the language and presumably the culture, so this kind of behavior seems right on point.
duskdozer··on Claude Duet
No, people now have postprocessors that replace the emdashes with other punctuation marks. It's subtle but you can tell when this has happened because it doesn't change the structure, and the LLMs misuse the emdash in a relatively consistent pattern.
duskdozer··on Using thousands of AI agents to uncover new leads in biological data
They don't see them as a "coding tool," they see them as your replacement. Everyone's replacement. Even if everything gets worse. Just a coding tool doesn't drive up massive valuations.
