Give Mint Debian a try - I've been very happy with it.

dv35z··on Ask HN: CAD for wood working with LLM support?
For those of you interested in building 3D things (using CNC, lasers, woodworking, 3D printing, etc), check out this forum:

https://forum.makerforums.info/latest

There are some active HN folks who participate in both communities. (Check out Oscar Gallegos, who uses AI to generate depth maps, and carves those into wood using CNC router)

dv35z··on OpenCode 2.0
I used OpenCode to help me install ollama, Qwen local LLM, and connect OpenCode to it.

The computer is very slow (old Dell Optiplex running Mint Debian Linux), but it worked! So cool to turn off the network, and still be able to chit-chat with Qwen model ("Tell me a joke about...").

Can you share some more detail of how you would implement this? Are you thinking something like VirtualBox (?), running a virtual machine, and you're using - for example, OpenCode terminal in the VM...?
dv35z··on Codex CLI installs a persistent, self-updating background daemon by default
One practical reason - system stability for important events.

I travel for work, and often have a tech demo, solution, tool, or something to show - or am running a workshop.

I usually do NOT update things right before my trip, as I want to minimize the potential for disruption.

What are the top ones you recommend? ( I am running Mint Debian Linux )
dv35z··on Whistle: Speech to Text in 16.9 MB
Another plug for Handy, and wanted to share something cool about it.

You can set it "Push to talk" mode (like a walkie-talkie radio), and when you're done talking and release the button, it can paste the text into any text field.

You can even replicate ChatGPT voice conversation mode, by having Handy as your speech input, and then (I forgot the extension) enabling a speech-to-text model for OpenCode. Surprisingly relaxing flow for certain tasks, like tweaking a website's styles.

Bootstrap stands the test of time! I use it as my go-to unless I have a reason otherwise.

That's interesting -

I have been playing with Whisper speech-to-text recently (both CLI, and also . Depending on the model & computer performance, it seems like it can stream (listen and transcribe to text) audio. Maybe you can pipe that to a text-to-speech service (remote or local), and configure that as an audio input to OBS.

Are you live-streaming, or just recording video file to edit/publish later? If it's not live, that may relax some of the latency requirements.

Related links:

- https://github.com/openai/whisper (speech-to-text for terminal)

- https://buzzcaptions.com/ (graphical interface to Whisper)

Somewhat related, Descript mentions it does dubbing. I recently used this tool to edit a video, and I was impressed by how easy it was, and accurate too. It may not fit your realtime use-case, but might be worth exploring...

Good luck!

Can you explain more what you are looking for, and what you are hoping to achieve?
dv35z··on Clipboard Normalizer
Browser bar technique - yes!

Alt+Tab (switch to browser), Alt+D (to get to the browser bar), Ctrl+V (paste), Ctrl+A (select all), Ctrl+C (copy), Alt+Tab (switch to application), Ctrl+V (paste unformatted text)

What a muscle memory! Wish Ctrl+Shift+V (paste plain text) was standardized at the OS level.

Note: Using Mint Debian Linux, but the same flow seems to apply to Windows & Mac.

Bonus: I really wish copying a file in the GUI (Finder on Mac, file explorer on Linux) would default to pasting the full file path/name, when pasting into plain text. I can't believe how difficult it is to get the actual file name in a modern OS!

Check out Austin Texas https://do512.com for inspiration of music/event trackers. Personally, I think a "Whitelabel"-able version of this, ready to be localized to a city/town, would be cool - especially if it generated custom calendar (iCal). I checked out potential alternatives, and really didn't seem much out there - especially that would be attractive/stylish to music fans.

Additionally, an "MVP" could be a single HTML page, which lists all the recurring events, grouped by week-dat on a week calendar. For example, if there's a venue which hosts a weekly jam session on Thursdays, you could add that once and it would always show up for the "What's happening Thursday?" area. Usually there are a bunch of recurring events in any town, so the calendar page quickly becomes a useful "what to do today/tomorrow" guide, with minimal effort.

dv35z··on Ask HN: What are you reading?
Curious if you have read the bible completely, starting from the beginning.

I recently started it - currently 30% through. I am tryin to hold back judgement until I have completed the book, but I can definitely say its quite shocking, nearly every page.

dv35z··on Ask HN: What are you reading?
Curious what you have learned so far about creativity, practical "do it now" type ideas.

I read Artists Way a few years back, and did some of the recommended practices (daily pages, and artist dates) - it was effective in subtle and powerful ways.

dv35z··on Ask HN: What are you reading?
What is Cosmere? (of course could look it up, but thought it may be interesting to learn here)
dv35z··on Ask HN: What are you reading?
What did you think of Autobiography of a Yogi?

I read after hearing that it was the #1 book Steve Jobs recommended his executive team read (!!)

dv35z··on Ask HN: What are you reading?
Great book! Makes you appreciate some life basics - like a scrap of bread, and a good coat!
dv35z··on Ask HN: What are you reading?
I just read

(1) Roadside Picnic (the book which "Stalker" game is based from).

This was a page-turner! Fascinated by the science artifacts & effects (like gravitational glitches, frozen black sparks, etc)

(2) "Childhood's End" by Arthur C Clarke (who wrote 2001 Space Odyssey)

The sheer time scale of the story is impressive, and the technology is so interesting - especially for 1950s! There are some interesting time effects too (like an unborn child telepathically channeling information to a conversation in the past!)

Curious what features you like in KDE. I also like kDE, but don't use it as my primary DE - in the past, it has felt complex to me.
dv35z··on Cpak – OCI application package format for Linux desktops, servers and devices
Consider checking out Linux Mint Debian Edition (LMDE). Best of two worlds - stable foundation of Debian, easy-to-use interface of Mint. I have been using it for about 2 years now, very happy with it.

I recently watched Matrix 1, 2, 3. Matrix 1 is amazing - if you feel called to rewatch it - watch it, and enjoy it. Might be better than how you remembered. I made the mistake to watch Matrix 2 and 3. Honestly, I suggest you just DON'T. I have not seen Matrix 4, and don't plan to. Best of luck!

The past several transactions I've done with Zelle, it has taken 3-5 days for the money to arrive. This was with a contact I sent money to before using Zelle (my brother), and also a new contact. I'm surprised because my experience has always been Zelle was instant. Has something changed with Zelle? The bank I am using is Ally.
dv35z··on Ask HN: Good large format (>20 inches) touchscreen E-Paper display options?
Interesting - and frustrating! It's size is JUST too large for A5.

For reference: This is the zip enclosure I currently use for A5-size notebooks, and, would like to use to contain the A5 eink solar computer...

dv35z··on Ask HN: Good large format (>20 inches) touchscreen E-Paper display options?
Nice - what would be your interest / use-case for this kind of computer?
dv35z··on Ask HN: Good large format (>20 inches) touchscreen E-Paper display options?
That Inkplate 10 is very interesting. https://soldered.com/collections/inkplate-e-paper-displays/p...

Very curious why someone hasn't made essentially a "dumb" eInk monitor, accepting HDMI/USB-C as the input (as opposed to this, which seems to be loaded with ESP32, etc)

dv35z··on Ask HN: Good large format (>20 inches) touchscreen E-Paper display options?
I'm still on the search for A5-sized E-ink screen, with HDMI or USB-C input (diagonoal: 25 cm / 10 inches diagonally).

I'm wanting to build a solar-powered e-ink laptop - so you can write / code in the sun. Mint Debian under the hood.

Open to ideas - trying to keep everything open-source architecture.
