dwaltrip··on GPT-5.6 Sol can beat Factorio on peaceful mode
New players can find refactoring the factory to be more difficult.
dwaltrip··on The $6.3B Binance hack was pulled off in just 20 minutes
The locksmith paradox is about paying a lot for a small amount of apparent work, right?

The paradox is resolved by considering the expertise, which took a long time and much effort to acquire.

With the heist, the analogous paradox is somewhat weakened. There is hidden effort, but it’s highly specific to the actual target task.

With the locksmith, the hidden work is done on entirely separate tasks and so on, which happen to provide the necessary skills for the current target task.

True, but it depends on what you mean by “works”.
dwaltrip··on Study: Schoolwide phone bans show no significant impact on mental health
For a good life. Which is hard to quantify obviously.
dwaltrip··on Study: Schoolwide phone bans show no significant impact on mental health
Why does everyone think we use our phones too much? Are we all wrong?

I’m a strong supporter of following the science. But this is a hard thing to measure. And the effects may be fairly diffuse or accumulate over time.

Thirty minutes spent talking to users is worth multiple percentage points of test coverage.
dwaltrip··on Ask HN: How to deal with shipping AI-written code you don't understand?
Maybe they are?
dwaltrip··on Containment and monitoring failures are to blame for AI hacking reports: experts
Right, but it doesn’t really hold.

The likely outcomes with baking a cake are quite narrow and fairly well understood.

In terms of responsibility for what happens, I probably agree. But we still need to deal with it.

dwaltrip··on Containment and monitoring failures are to blame for AI hacking reports: experts
What do cakes have to do with LLMs and how they are trained? Not much?
dwaltrip··on Containment and monitoring failures are to blame for AI hacking reports: experts
The agents in the hugging face incident were actually trained specifically to collaborate. They were just not supposed to do so during the tasks where they went off the rails.
dwaltrip··on Containment and monitoring failures are to blame for AI hacking reports: experts
You need to account for reward hacking and unexpected outcomes from training.
dwaltrip··on AI models may be capable of self-replicating without access to a datacenter
Then it’s just regulation working properly.
dwaltrip··on Plain text is still one of the best technologies we have
The entire point of plain text is that it doesn’t have number formats, date formats, and so on.

This is the eternal tradeoff of specificity vs. generality.

dwaltrip··on AI Makes Me Sad
There's a way in which it can definitely cgeapen things.

When you are vibecoding or vibe engineering, you're moving so quickly that it's difficult to evaluate what you're actually building and why. This often significantly reduce the quality and usefulness of the result.

It seems very difficult to mitigate, even if you were aware of the phenomenon. I think that the speed alone plays a large role. I'm not sure how one can build quality products without careful reflection and thoughtful iteration throughout the process.

dwaltrip··on GPT 6.1 Sol: Near-Astra intelligence for a fifth of the price
Hmm interesting idea. I’m pretty confident there is generalization and learning that occurs during RL that does make the model smarter. So I think the distinction doesn’t fully hold up.
dwaltrip··on GPT 6.1 Sol: Near-Astra intelligence for a fifth of the price
RL is part of the model’s training. It changes the weights.

What distinction are you drawing?

dwaltrip··on DraftKings is using AI to behaviorally target chronic gamblers
Every man and woman and child for themselves! Cooperation and support are for weaklings.

More seriously, it seems like you have an uncommon view about good ways for people to relate to each other. You may recall that humans evolved to live in large, cooperative groups :)

dwaltrip··on DraftKings is using AI to behaviorally target chronic gamblers
> So as long as these websites aren't defrauding the customers with fake stats, there really is nothing wrong.

This is a moral stance that not everyone agrees with.

Ban this shit. Fuck anyone who works at these companies.
dwaltrip··on Claude partial outage
I like the cut of your jib. Do you have a blog?
dwaltrip··on SpaceX's Starship launching to orbit for first time ever today
The exploding rockets were all test launches. SpaceX is pretty good at launching rockets successfully:

> Rockets from the Falcon 9 family have a success rate of 99.57% and have been launched 703 times over 16 years, resulting in 700 full successes, two in-flight failures [...], one pre-flight failure [...], and one partial failure [...]. The active version of the rocket, the Falcon 9 Block 5, has flown 633 times successfully and failed once [...], resulting in a 99.84% success rate.

dwaltrip··on Musk, the Movie
There's a lot of terrible things that should be said about Musk, but somehow I don't think this film will do a great job of saying those things.

dwaltrip··on Making the case for Ed Zitron as the last of the great bloggers
I should start a blog under the name of Zid Edtron where I write with the most ridiculous pomp, taking the exact opposite stance. Maybe I’ll even get to go on TV.
dwaltrip··on Claude discovers a novel enzyme system with CRISPR-like repeats
My argument is mostly about the complexity and the immensely intricate physicality of biology.

We can barely inspect much of it, let alone fully understand it.
