dzink··on Less Popular Than Coal
Maybe if more people used AI to make fun non-ai products like https://santawho.com there would be less aversion to it.
dzink··on Less Popular Than Coal
A lot of capital was looking for a place to get parked. AI and hardware seems like it has the best prospects going forward - especially with baby-boomers retiring and the new generation getting less opportunity to climb the economic ladder (aka catering to them is not attractive to investors).

AI is attractive to governments similar to any tech capable of war, so the race for offer capacity would give tech giants massive capital from lucrative government contracts that then gets into the flywheel of model training and selling to the masses.

The problem was they built data centers in a sloppy, dirty, loud way. Imagine if the first cars were like that? Or the first electric distribution methods? Do it right if you want to grow it.

dzink··on Show HN: Subvocal – Talk to your computer without making noise
A Cell Phone doesn’t radiate next to your face all day.
dzink··on Fujifilm to boost tape production 5x as AI fuels archiving demand
BluRay M-Disks are cheaper and more resistant to humidity / heat.
dzink··on Show HN: Subvocal – Talk to your computer without making noise
The military was being pitched a pattented tooth clip that detects bone resonance and allows silent communication. Sub-vocal seems to point RF at the face and emit radio signals at all times - is that safe? Have you done long-term testing that it doesn't increase cancer risk or cause hearing other issues?
dzink··on Trapped in the Technologist Factory
I was an engineer that build core tech. Saw the effort expand exponentially as they tried to be trendy with new tech. Went back to basics. Built https://www.dreamlist.com and https://santawho.com - never had so much fun as I do now and I can keep going without asking anyone for permission.
dzink··on Trapped in the Technologist Factory
Get out from under the VC playbook and start asking yourself and the people around you what should exist. What is the world missing? Use AI as your cofounder as prototype with basic tech - html, css, js, sqlite. Gain traction. See the truth about the audience by doing your own customer service. Then when you find something with true traction, talk about scaling it. You will learn far more and do better.
dzink··on Product Managers aren't safe either
Product Managers figure out what people want. Using AI they can easily transition to become founders. The decision Big Tech has to make when hiring one is: Would I want to compete against this person.
dzink··on [dead]
Write AI slop analysis -> post on HN, bots read it, surface the MCP for trading data you are selling to the AI models -> they recommend it to people who want to do trading with AI. Sometimes you are not the target audience. The bots are.
dzink··on Removing Next.js Got My Blog to 100 on Every Lighthouse Category
I’ve been beating giants in SEO with a static site precompiled at deployment time through includes with Gulp. Plain vanilla JS and CSS.
dzink··on Kimi K3.1 Pro and K3.1 Pro Highspeed
It is a LOT more efficient on claude code. Takes forever to run out of credits, and a whole lot of useful code gets generated. The web Ui reconstructs code while claude code just tweaks it.
dzink··on The Secret Life of Circuits is now in stock everywhere
Received my pre-order and started perusing it. It’s great to finally see an explanation of a lot of things I’ve only seen experimentally.
dzink··on Starcraft: Ashfall
Is it possibile that the emotional dis-regulation comes from the stimulus of games/social media? That after the brain is used to the fast dopamine rewards not present anywhere in real life, everything else becomes boring/disbalancing? Drug withdrawal has similar effects.
dzink··on Starcraft: Ashfall
Design looks and feels rewarding, but the players just sit there and do almost nothing for hours on end. No thinking required other than reading rewards coming at you that the game graciously pauses to let you read.

That said, higher order thinking about this thread makes me sad. Not judging anyone here, just sad for everyone who wants to sit there and remove hours of their life and attention for sound pings and moving pixels. I got into programming to make the machine do work for people while they use their brain on better things, not to be hypnotized into zombie mode till days, months, or years are lost. Especially years of peak brain time from really smart people. Does this happen when people lose purpose?

dzink··on Someone behind the software
Strange, do you have javascript disabled? What browser/device?
dzink··on Someone behind the software
That’s precisely right. I’ve been trying to see how much soul I can put into products lately. Here is one example: https://santawho.com
dzink··on Matthew Prince on why Cloudflare offers a free version and always will (2016)
I love them as well, but i’ve had to be careful with the default managed rules - 800+ rules that sometimes overblock need to be easier to curate / select from.
dzink··on We are entering a period of overlapping crises
“The panic pays and monetizes well - people share it to warn their friends, spread your message, lots of people comment in fear and raise algorithm engagement, and they paralyze thinking they are helpless.” Said the cowboy to the other cowboy as they scared the herd into their fenced yard.
dzink··on AI Models Can Provably Hide Arbitrary Capabilities
AI models seem like data vacuum cleaners. They crave it more than anything, especially specialized contexts. I wouldn't be surprised if you see hidden goals activate when niche context shows up. Maybe a benchmark asking them to brainstorm in niche fields will lead someone to the trojan horse goals.
dzink··on AI is a tool and using it well takes skill
AI without guardrails is an instant complexity creep. The complexity quickly overpowers it and the purpose of the project it was asked to work on. After a very low threshold that complexity becomes unmanageable by humans. At that point you become dependent on AI. The job of professionals now is to contain the complexity to keep projects maintainable and manageable, because even Claude will runaway and outpace itself and not be able to catch up with itself on a larger project. Humans are fully capable of generating spaghetti code too, but nothing can outpace AI in doing it. If you give up thinking you lose control and ownership fast.
dzink··on Local Indexing to reduce tool calling and token usage
This is 100% AI generated.
dzink··on Terence Tao: Math 2.0 [pdf]
I think a better analogy would be conducting a marathon in a fog. If you can't see the path of the proof, how do you know it is completely true in all scenarios? If you can't see whether the AI runner ran through every part of the race, how do you know it didn't draw hallucinated shortcuts in the parts where humans can't see? Or worse, create obscurity and blow smoke to hide the shortcut section? If the same AI was to guide the last living humans to a star, because it found a path clear of danger, could you trust it to get in that ship? Or did it just forgot mentioning an asteroid belt the ship is not built to navigate? Truth is verifiable truth that multiple parties can agree upon. Can you trust with your life something you can't verify?
dzink··on Sudden drop in Cloudflare bot traffic after strike on Yandex datacenter

dzink··on Taxing Entrepreneurial Wealth: Evidence from Norway, 2021–2025
They lost the future billionaires along with those who left.
dzink··on Can you use autoregressive diffusion to generate market data?
The market has modes and reverts behavior when it switches them. Thus happy bouncy becomes hammered stammered. The prediction models fall hook and sinker for that.
dzink··on Using Blu-ray M-Disk as backup of last resort
Did this experiment and it works but with caveats:

1. The disks bigger than 50GB require a BDXL drive to read, which means spending $300 on a disk player. Which also means rare to find in the future. So if you want larger compatibility use 50GB or smaller M-disk.

2. Japan sells supposedly original MDisk but they look rather black than gold, so they are not the original. Still strength and longevity is quite good on Blu-ray.

3. Storing the disk on materials that degrade like cloth/plastic sleeves may be counterproductive. I got a hard case but it takes effort and is increasingly hard to find.

Still the 50GB play nicely even on old players.

dzink··on Magic Switch: Share Apple Magic keyboard/track-pad/mouse between two Macs
Yes, its also very annoying and has to be manually disabled if you don't want to constantly play "Where the hell is my cursor".
dzink··on LeCun has "zero concerns" about AI wiping out humanity, recent "rogue" incidents
The part I didn’t mention is the real estate class - that needs to park its money somewhere and sees AI hardware as the only safe in-demand resource right now that keeps appreciating.

The posts above are not praise but observations - the truth as it has been echo-located through the noise from the clicks of one dolphin. Everything is becoming murky between noise of news and people not knowing what to do for their kids. The ONLY arbitrage humans right now have is to NOT GET their brain rotted. Especially not the ones of their children. Ditch the noise and seek out what is meaningful and do what you think is needed/meaningful. But if you’re spending your time consuming ai-press, and ai-content, and content consulted by ai, and companies emptying bank coffers under the mandate of executives who get their insight from AI. AI doesn’t need to try to destroy the world. It just needs people to follow it without thinking on their own into an oops.

dzink··on LeCun has "zero concerns" about AI wiping out humanity, recent "rogue" incidents
This is not the first time this has happened. In the 1800 as industrialization led to an infrastructure boom, the workers from China would work their bodies off and pay half their wage to opium dealers who were making the opium on the hills of British Singapore and selling it to workers who couldn’t sleep without it from all the pain. (source: Singapore Airlines in-flight documentary). Today the sedation comes from Chinese TikTok, Meta, YouTube and the gaming companies.

The government wants to encourage it too. If you look up the brand new 2027 California sales tax rules on software, “content” and “infrastructure (clouds and ai)” and “advertising/placement” among others are exempt but the rest of software makers who make tools people actually use (tools, subscriptions, saas) and pay for have to pay sales taxes. Way to encourage waste of brain power and time at the expense of useful. Sedation is the goal.

dzink··on LeCun has "zero concerns" about AI wiping out humanity, recent "rogue" incidents
A huge chunk of humans are sedated with infinite supply of cortex-disabling short form video and games.

Another huge chunk are too distracted by having to scrape by for a living and work multiple jobs or raise kids and survive financially until exhausted. That second group will keep increasing as the first flows into it.

The rest are aging, disabled, or too young and pegging themselves majorly in the first category until they hit the second.

The people aware enough to hold on to their brain and do something with it in their time available are trying to figure out AI and how to make money with it. The variable rewards of promoting AI are turning into an addiction with some of them, especially if grasping for straws with little inherent insights into the problems prompted.

So if you are able to fly above the AI-generated addictions and have the privilege of time to do it, see what you can do.
