e03179··on Tech companies giving away free face masks to combat coronavirus
I wouldn't mind getting one myself
e03179··on Black Hawk flies, lands and avoids threats - all without pilots
Def can figure out position in space without the aide of GPS.
e03179··on Black Hawk flies, lands and avoids threats - all without pilots
I can think of all kinds of wacky ways to crash one of these things.

Please do tell. Thanks.

e03179··on Nasa to send new rover to Mars in 2020
Why "humanoid" robots? Why not just "robots" that can do a job no matter what they look like?
e03179··on Scientists Recover Oldest Playable American Recording
One day, we'll recover sound from vibrations recorded in paint and mortar.
e03179··on The island where people forget to die
The Standard American Diet causes illness and disease.
e03179··on Why 4K TVs are stupid
In a world of capped data consumption, how would companies deliver 4k content over data networks?
e03179··on Show HN: Meet your cardboard buddy.
XBOX 360 avatars can be extremely customizable and are stored in a 3D format on MS servers (and likely on the console itself). The recognize many friends online because of their avatar.

I'd pay $$ to have a 3d printout of my XBOX 360 avatar...perhaps even with articulating appendages.

e03179··on Space colony art from the 1970s
Today it's more about growing cyberspace than outer space.
e03179··on Ask HN: How did you hack the press when you launched your startup(s)?
OT: But wow at the blog spam on the old TC articles.
e03179··on A proposal for improving HN : it should cost a user Karma to post
Some HN members know other HM members in real life. You have business or personal relationships with others that also read, post, and comment on this forum. Some of you have never met any other HN member in real life, but do consider some HN members as friends and acquaintances.

I, on the other hand, have met none of you and don't carry on a virtual relationship with any other HN member. I consume your news and up-vote articles that I want to see more of on this forum. And on rare occasion I will post a comment.

All that said, besides PG, I absolutely don't care what the USERNAME is of the original poster.

I do scan the front page to see if there is any article is an extraordinary number of POINTS or COMMENTS. POINTS and COMMENTS are probably 75% of the reason why I click on a link of the front page. And the more comments a link has, the most likely, I will click on the COMMENTS thread before I even read the article. 25% of the time I will click on a link because it contains a keyword (to include the URL snippet) which is in regard to something I care about.

e03179··on The Next Microsoft
The best brand pitched here is that of the author. If he is looking for a job, I hope he gets one.
e03179··on Kid Automates Work, Is Fired, Hired Back, Automates Business
The password was what prevented his coworkers from taking the program and earning more bonus money.

It probably also kept several people from being fired.

e03179··on Microsoft introduces Windows Phone 8
Agree.

The Zune Pass worked great for me ($10/mo) to listen to all the music in their library on multiple devices and computers.

I've said for a while that if Apple released a subscription-based iTunes that a lot of people would use it...perhaps even rave about it.

And then Spotify came along which replaced my Zune Pass membership.

e03179··on Updating Your Password on LinkedIn and Other Account Security Best Practices
Most of my passwords are written down on a sheet of paper. Even if you knew that the sheet of paper contains some of my passwords, I don't think you'd be able to extract them since there's a layer of encryption between my eyes and my fingers.
e03179··on Why Instagram Is Terrible for Photographers, and Why You Should Use It
Some artists are realizing that they can expand their online presence by using other apps to create digital art while publishing into Instagram's ecosystem.

I'm never going to print out a 612 x 612 image to hang on my wall. I will contact an artist to ask for a higher resolution image to purchase and display.

e03179··on Interesting Church Site in pure HTML
http://www.hnsearch.com/search#request/all&q=parallax

A guess the news here is that a church has a website that looks like it wasn't built by the pastor's son in the late 90's.

e03179··on Man Supposedly Flies With Custom-Built Bird Wings
I just can't figure out why they had the guy in the middle run straight toward the camera as he begins his "taxi".
e03179··on Man Supposedly Flies With Custom-Built Bird Wings
Where was the camera operator at 0:35?
e03179··on Sad but true: Napster '99 still smokes Spotify 2012
RE: slow downloads thru Napster

Of course, high speed internet is much more prevalent now in 2012 than it was in '99. Downloading an album in '99 sometimes meant you were downloading from PC's with only a 56k modem for connectivity.

e03179··on ESPN Developer Center
ESPN is one of the greatest brokers of all time.
e03179··on Poll: Do you think HN should go dark in protest of SOPA?
Should the anti-SOPA website go dark in protest of SOPA?
e03179··on The Army goes Android
The US ARMY and Apple have been in talks for years and it is clear that Apple isn't desperate enough for the ARMY's biz. That is, Apple doesn't want to bend enough to satisfy DoD security requirements for both mobile and desktop devices. The ARMY has had a big fat check with Apple's name on it for years.
e03179··on Attention Startups, Online Gambling May Be the Big Market in New York for 2012
Gambling from a mobile device will be huge. Not only will the gambling market see an explosion, but there will be spinoffs, such a security and cheat detection companies.

Also, a market that is growing fast that you may not be aware of is daily fantasy sports. Fantasy Football is considered a "game of skill". So, companies are popping up that allow users to build "fantasy teams" that only play for one week. Basically, you are using your skill to pick the best players for the week.

IMO, the companies that are doing well in this market have poor marketing and a 1990's aura about them. Someone could just in right now, buy a subscription to a stats provider, make a slick mobile app, and take the whole market.

e03179··on The biggest iOS 5 bug you've never heard of
This happened in iOS 4 as well.

In fact, it happened to me on WinMo phone years ago.

e03179··on "I would dial the 300 baud dial-up number, and scream the carrier tone."
In the early 90's I used an old VCR tuner (over the air) to listen to telephone conversations people were making. I lived in an extremely rural area and had few neighbors.
e03179··on Ask HN: How Can We Help Make HN a Better Online Community?

e03179··on Ask HN: I can't tell why my site is showing malware warning.
Overwrite core WordPress files first. Run WordPress Exploit Scanner to root out anything in the database, and WordPress File Monitor as a tripwire going forward.

http://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/exploit-scanner/

http://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/wordpress-file-monitor/

That's what I did when I had this same issue happen to me on my WP installs (yeah, the same hole infected other sites on the server). These plugins showed me what files on my server had be changed and where the offending code was.

How old is your WP install? The hole could actually be in a plugin you are using. That was the case with me.

Also, TimThumb.php was recently in the news as having a security hole in it.

For good measure, here is the Hardening Wordpress article from WP: http://codex.wordpress.org/Hardening_WordPress

e03179··on STS-135 Live: The Last Shuttle Mission
Hrmm. Sounds like the misguided Shuttle program is like a lot of popular web technologies and protocols (better alternatives out there, people doing busy work for years on end, concern of security, etc.).
