I install Qalculate on every machine I own, even the Windows ones, so for the calc pros in here: which one is better? Thanks.
eahm··on Hacker leaks 281 GB of data from Germany's far-right AfD party
Not by today' standards or definitions but they were definitely right or left views.
eahm··on Thunderbird for iOS
You might have the best intentions but why the hell would I sign up for a service that does what email/IMAP does in the first place?

Hosting is expensive too, free forever is another question in my mind.

Don't people remember what email IS anymore? Make me understand.

eahm··on IRCv3
You forgot to say “Written in Go” /s

I’ve been checking your client for a while and it looks awesome, thanks for the reminder, finally after 30+ years I think I really got tired and left IRC for good but I’ll download and give it a go later today.

eahm··on When did Google get so weird?
Moved to https://search.brave.com years ago because that's what works/worked the best for me but I'm about to move again I think to https://noai.duckduckgo.com because of that annoying Leo AI that's always wrong.

I'd love to move away from Google entirely but it's a long process, years of business on Google Workspace etc. I hate to be tied to companies like this, when I started I never thought Google would end up like Microsoft.

eahm··on Apple M6 Pro Achieves the Highest Single-Core CPU Score in Geekbench 7
Linux has been at 100% for years, don't get confused about mouse and keyboard.
eahm··on Apple M6 Pro Achieves the Highest Single-Core CPU Score in Geekbench 7
I think it's neither, it all comes down to peace of mind and that's the true future of technology.

In the past it was more of a race of companies trying to get "there" first, not anymore, we live in an interesting age where people feel constantly controlled and everyone is exhausted about tech in general.

Linux gives you that middle finger peace of mind like saying "I will never be controlled anymore and ever again" ..funny there is a big Warez article on the HN homepage at the same time of this discussion, that's exactly what it feels like to finally come out on the other side legally.

People took decades to finally being liberated from Windows and Microsoft and many like me will never be controlled that way again and while I respect Apple more than Microsoft for a lot of things in the end it's just another corporation that wants to greedily take your life energy and precious time and enslave you again.

They are creating the best hardware at the worst possible time, but it's good for competition so it's all good.

eahm··on Warez: The Infrastructure and Aesthetics of Piracy (2021)
Always has been.
eahm··on Apple M6 Pro Achieves the Highest Single-Core CPU Score in Geekbench 7
Not going to happen, Linux already won, doesn’t look like it but you’ll see.

Linux is actually exciting contrary to Apple as a company, their hardware, their prices and macOS in general.

And I’m saying this as a Windows user too, I will NEVER buy a Mac but I’ve used Linux on and off for 30+ years.

For the past 5-10 years Linux has been the only excitement I’ve had personally.

eahm··on O&O ShutUp10 – The antispy tool for Windows 10 and 11
Some run post install, most during, NTLite is good as well but too much work since unattended.xml just works so well.

There was another one too at some point called MSMG Toolkit (IIRC) that worked wonders but who knows what happened to that.

After 30+ years of using every OS I just don't want to deal with an OS that constantly fights with you just to try to make it usable, unattended.xml is MY path of least resistance, configure once, check/update every now and then, no need to learn new tricks.

eahm··on O&O ShutUp10 – The antispy tool for Windows 10 and 11
https://schneegans.de/windows/unattend-generator made all those tools obsolete and useless for the most part, "debloating" after it's installed is always bad business.

https://wpd.app works well too for extra telemetry and https://github.com/builtbybel/privatezilla still works with Windows 11 but again autounattend.xml works magic.

> hate is a good thing.

Hate more if you care.

The more you hate, the more you care.

Support hate.

Relax people it's a joke, if I have to say it it's not funny anymore.

eahm··on Omarchy: Any User Process Can Escalate to Root
And here it begins…

Been using Linux on and off for 30+ years and I’ve always always had second thoughts about using anything outside the main 3-4 distros, and I mean forks, blends etc. let alone vibe coded distros, even *buntu feels like a stretch.

I really like DHH’s enthusiasm and what he’s trying to do but I will never touch that “distro”.

Debian/Devuan, Fedora/RHEL/Alma/Rocky, Arch/Artix, FreeBSD/OpenBS/NetBSD are all anyone will ever need.

You feel more adventurous? NixOS, Gentoo, Slackware, Void.

That’s it. No forks, no blends.

I keep Xebian and LMDE ISOs in my flash drive to show people but I don’t personally use even those.

People jumping all around these new distros that only seem to change a wallpaper without knowing the basics is a bad choice, like the first comment says, isn’t this the reason you wanted to move away from Windows in the first place?

Just take your time and enjoy learning, they are all so simple today compared to decades ago it’s crazy.

Thank you for listening to my TED talk.

eahm··on 9th Circuit sides with states in Kalshi gambling fight
All good and cool when they do it and make money, like the lotteries, but when normal people do it nonono, can't happen.

That said, I've never touched Kalshi or that other one or the lottery. It's all a scam anyway.

eahm··on GUIs should be fully keyboard-driven
Funny, I don’t want to use the keyboards at all, everything should be accessible to the mouse pointer.

Tiling WMs are cool and all but I’d rather use something like AwesomeWM.

eahm··on NetBSD and my life (2005)
Awesome!

Two things:

1) “We were” (sorry I had to do it).

2) Why NetBSD? Why not FreeBSD or Debian or heck even Ubuntu Server or RHEL/CentOS (forgot it was 2005)?

Glad you got the spend more time with the family!

eahm··on Pixel 11 Pro Fold feels like the end of an era
> It appears you haven't attempted to buy a used car lately either.

Ah! Fair.

eahm··on Pixel 11 Pro Fold feels like the end of an era
I think everyone lost their damn mind, possibly during Covid.

New iPhones used to be $199 and when they went to $299 the decision was seriously questionable.

Now they cost like a used car, everyone buys $1000+ iPhones without batting an eye, insane.

This one is $2000, I wouldn't get it if I had a billion on principle.

eahm··on Firefox is now the last major browser that still supports uBlock Origin
That only hides them, this disables them: https://rentry.co/browserconfigs
eahm··on Firefox is now the last major browser that still supports uBlock Origin
Agree on the last part, let’s see for how long.. but for now it’s simply not true.
eahm··on Firefox is now the last major browser that still supports uBlock Origin
Wtf, simply not true:

Brave: chrome://flags/#brave-extensions-manifest-v2 > brave://settings/extensions/v2 > Enable uBlock Origin (Brave-hosted, even better).

Helium comes with uBlock Origin pre-installed.

Edge even still has it https://microsoftedge.microsoft.com/addons/detail/ublock-ori...

And I'm sure others ...I personally only use/test Brave, Brave Origin, Helium and Firefox.

eahm··on What happens if an entire class of workers loses faith in their careers
Because everything is ads, lots of propaganda and too much politics.

Flame wars used to be about distros and code and now it’s about how people think and opinions.

Everyone needs to go outside for a second, smell the flowers, hear the birds chip and calm down.

eahm··on I learned PCB design, 3D printing and C just to listen to music
Sorry but ...a Mini PC with foobar2000, remote controlled via phone/web and a monitor for the full screen cover and done, that's what I'd do.
eahm··on Ask HN: Do you delete your browsing history?
If you can't predict what isn't worth saving it means it wasn't worth saving.

I login and use it a little different for work but I separate sessions and leave them open longer until I'm done and still everything clears when I close, sometimes I remove the checkbox but I clear at the end of the day.

eahm··on Ask HN: Do you delete your browsing history?
Not just the history, I personally delete everything every time I close the browser, if something is worth saving I bookmark it or I make a .txt in Documents for later review. Also I pretty much don't login anywhere anyway.
eahm··on Lost city discovered beneath Egypt's desert with ancient church
>This is the only place in the world where I can say this about.

Really dude? About India? South America in general, especially Brazil?

I traveled a lot and I love everywhere, everyone and everything buy there are some places that scam 24/7.

eahm··on The User Is Visibly Frustrated
Oh now I get it, it's an Italian thing.

"Why the fuck did you add shit I didn't ask for?" or lol "Do as I ask, nothing more.. machine."

"Stop asking at the end, I'll ask what I need."

"Stop talking like you're human."

They can be very useful but it takes time to learn how to use them usefully. From what I learned it's all or mostly stuff you can already do but you can use an LLM to do it in 30 mins instead of 3 days.

Fun times.

eahm··on TheLounge v4.5.0 released – a modern, self-hosted web IRC client
Very nice client integrations indeed, tested a few weeks ago.

It'd be cool if they also could integrate my theme/s: https://rentry.co/sm47hd77, been perfecting it for years and it's the only one I'm willing to use tbh.

Suggestion:

They should change the font here: https://client.twistednet.org/cryptirc, can barely ready anything on iPhone.
