ece··on Android's sideloading limits are its most anti-consumer move
Let's make life harder for the only mobile app store (F-Droid) that hasn't had any malware on it since it's inception - someone at Google probably.
ece··on In the long run, GPL code becomes irrelevant (2015)
Bro quite literally does not understand the stated practical reasons projects use different licenses, makes up rationales for "exceptions" to suit his theory.

Would be nice to have have things like this be mentioned in normal weather forecasts.

ece··on Mark Zuckerberg's failed negotiations with the FTC to end Meta's antitrust case
Whatsapp and Instagram only compete with others if you can convince others to install another app and switch to it. Switching phones is easier, so is whatever else you personally use by far. I'm glad beeper exists, but it shouldn't have taken this long for it to exist. Only one way to reduce harmful network effects, give users more choice.
ece··on Real Time Chess – A physical chess board without the concept of turns
The Wikipedia page mentions the Chezz app, and it's available and fun. Reminds me of really bad chess too.

ece··on Karol Herbst Steps Down as Nouveau Maintainer Due to Linux's Toxic Environment
If the rule is you break it, you fix it, I don't see why it should be anything different for a multi-language project. If the feature makes technical sense and people want it, it should happen.
ece··on A post by Guido van Rossum removed for violating Python community guidelines

ece··on Google Play will no longer pay to discover vulnerabilities in Android apps
Android TV boxes are really like the Windows ME of yore.
ece··on Guest Users Module for Linux
This could be pretty great for letting family members try Linux on your own device before putting it on a USB disk or installing on a separate partition. I've also just installed apps on WSL or brew for family members to try.
ece··on How to prolong lithium based batteries
Charging at 1C or less on phones would mean 20W on a 5000mAh battery. For laptops it would be 100W maximum, probably 65W or 45W for most laptops. All the Dell laptops I have allow me to set a low percentage and high percentage, and I have the high set to 55% on laptops I use primarily plugged in, and 80-90% on more mobile laptops. Now if only Pixel phones and ereaders/watches/battery banks also allow me to have such control over how much to charge.

Would be ideal to have LFP batteries and such control, but that will take a while.

ece··on Firefox bug gets fixed after 25 years
BugBot was on to something: https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=33654#c190

"The severity field for this bug is relatively low, S3. However, the bug has 27 duplicates, 103 votes and 91 CCs. :emilio, could you consider increasing the bug severity?

ece··on Turn Your Android Tablet into an IDE with VSCode and Nix
Android should just add a ChomeOS-like give me a Linux dev environment feature that's officially supported. Sticking to old APIs like Termux is bound to run into problems down the road.
ece··on Jeff Bezos emails Amazon exec
Well, considering an outbreak of destroyed evidence seems to be happening in the courts, with some accountability hopefully it will be an unwritten law. But of course Congress could also get involved.
ece··on Jeff Bezos emails Amazon exec
Execs can only use E2EE for personal purposes, not business.
ece··on Run0, a systemd based alternative to sudo, announced
It's not pledge, but firejail and other SUID binaries like it (bubblewrap, nsjail, etc..) are the only such ones on my system. It's better than grsec/chroot sandbox I used back in the day on Gentoo. I've also used shorewall, ufw, opensnitch for firewalls over the years. I could go on.
ece··on Run0, a systemd based alternative to sudo, announced
Over the years I've switched from various cron daemons (anacron, cronie), sysloggers (r-syslog, syslog-ng), network managers (netifrc, NetworkManager) even ssh servers/clients (dropbear, openssh), and init systems (sysvinit, openrc) and never have I felt the need to switch to systemd despite reading some of Lennart's posts. I've used Gentoo over the years, maybe that's why.

Doas is available on Linux as a sudo alternative, I think I'll be trying that next, though I've only a limited amount of SUID binaries on my system to being with, and don't need sudo's extra features.

ece··on Questioning the conventional wisdom on liability and open source software
On one hand, someone like a Jia Tan should be held to account in some way, if it was a nation state, there could be sanctions.

On the other hand, finding the actual malicious actor seems like a harder problem than fixing code and ensuring resilient trust chains.

ece··on The surge in immigration is a $7T gift to the economy
Posted a link to archive.is: https://archive.is/y9nZK

To be frank, someone could also make the argument immigration is good for inflation and productivity since it grows the population and provides a more competitive labor market. This is in addition to what is mentioned in the article like higher rates of contributing to the economy in various ways.

The social safety net should also improve as the population grows though, and that would include job assistance for those already here. The benefits of immigration far outweigh the costs, but if you only focus on the costs, you ignore the benefits.

ece··on AMD's Mild Hybrid Strategy: Ryzen Z1 in Asus's ROG Ally
Would've been cool if Asus had really tried to optimize the Ally around the Z1 with faster RAM, higher GPU clocks, and better battery life instead of offering the Z1 Extreme in an upsell. It's going for $400 now, which would've been real competition a year ago. Hard to recommend it now over the OLED Deck.

Will be interesting to see AMD try this in consumer processors, with frame time graphs.

ece··on 5 years of litigation: Meta apparently switches to consent for behavioral ads
..with large fines. If Meta is found to be using user data for behavioral targeting even after a user opt-out, the EU and even CA should be on it.
ece··on 5 years of litigation: Meta apparently switches to consent for behavioral ads
Regulation as infrastructure needs to be built, the holes will be constant and need patching I think.
