echaozh··on Startup founders urge U.S. government not to shut off Chinese open weight AI
> Though one must ask, why are American models banned in China? Hmmm.

Because they're not? But the American government and Anthropic don't want American models to be used by the Chinese. Anthropic is notorious for its effort to tell if the user is within China.

What I don't really understand, as an outsider, aren't the arabs semitic too? Why doesn't the word antisemitism include the hatred toward the arabs?

What do you think of the donations to open source project maintainers or photographers or musicians? What about gifts sent to tiktok hosts?

I'm from a country where there're no tips, and I'm not defending tips at all. But I do think the tiktok gifts are basically tips right? Is it a good idea to live off the gifts like the tips?

echaozh··on Why does Apple make a minority of developers finance the entire App Store?
Um, does a mall normally gets a cut in all the sales which happen in the stores on its ground? The mall surely keeps the stores running by providing services like security, parking, advertising to attract people, etc.
echaozh··on The TikTok Case Will Be Determined by What's Behind the Government's Black Lines
> If a country that we are likely to be at war with has significant influencer over our population, that is indeed a big deal.

So, how will the war begin? Who will begin it? How long has the US or its allies been planning to start this war?

echaozh··on China's total wind and solar capacity outstrips coal
It doesn't just so happens that solar is cheap energy. It's China who made solar cheap energy.

So did Beijing bomb the Uyghurs? Do you see Uyghurs anywhere cry for kins killed by bombs or houses destroyed? How can you compare China with Israel?

Also, sure Uyghurs killed Hans in riots, and they sure have conducted terrorist attacks in China.

echaozh··on US general warns troops that war with China is possible in two years
Taking Taiwan back won't make a Chinese leader "great". It is more of a responsibility and sort of a minor one, as a not so famous general (Shi Lang) in Qing dynasty achieved this and people have criticized and are still criticizing him for his betrayal to the Ming dynasty.

Deng Xiaoping brought Hong Kong and Macao back, but he was memorated as a great leader not because of this, but because he opened the door for China to its economic prosperity.

Perhaps the dying Chinese people are more willing to donate their organs and there are more Chinese people dying as there are more people in China?

echaozh··on Intel apologises in China over Xinjiang supplier statement
It's really absurd to call any labor performed by Uygur inside China forced labor. Are Uygurs so lazy to deny any labor? Or can they not prefer working in factories than, say, farming or herding cattles?

As to the ideology and gratitude part, I think people may alter their ideology if they so choose. After all, the Romans switched to Christianity, and slavery was once legal in the States. And people should be able to express gratitude to people giving them a chance to work for a better life. Even now, people from abroad are moving into the States to work, are they all forced labor?

This thing can be good for the Chinese people, but it's CCP, so yeah, it must be evil intentioned.

I don't know if you really mean it or you are forced to well imagine it so your comment won't be downvoted.

echaozh··on Canada: Hundreds of unmarked graves found at residential school
But you could just ask. If the natives don't want a modern lifestyle, that's ok. If they do want it, you should definitely give them a chance to work and earn it. The same applies in the alien-earth case too.

At the very least, if you insist your way of treating less advanced cultures, democracy should never be spread to countries that were previously authoritarian, because that was their natural way of living.

echaozh··on Apple makes its case against iPhone app sideloading
So you must love China and CCP. China is very safe, you don't get gunned on the street (or in schools for that matter), and you don't fear absurd medical bills. The government runs a walled garden and the corporations have to cooperate due to the market size.

I thought the West is open to criticism, but it looks like I'm wrong. The West is open to criticism, if and only if the criticisizer also critisizes the West's enemy. How open minded it is.
echaozh··on Professor suspended for saying 那个 nà ge
I don't think emotional offence should be treated exactly like physical harm. Different people may take offence from different actions, and it's not fair to require everyone to judge accurately what is and what is not offensive to all the other people they're going to interact with, especially in a society that is aiming for diversity. In East Asia, where most people think alike, it's easier to guess people's reaction, but it's definitely not so in other parts of the world.

For physical harm, however, ignorance should not be an excuse. It may reduce the responsibility, but it should not completely remove it. Not knowing something can kill doesn't change the fact that one had actually killed.
