It most likely has to do with my own ignorance about philosophy, but all I got from the book was that the author hates Aristotle and rigorous classification. And that quality is a more important property than morality.
With Emacs and Evil, you can get the best of both worlds.
I'm not the OP, but it bothered me too. It goes against HN's general discussion style.
In an ideal situation, the CEOs themselves would run the charity, like Bill Gates. Of course that is not possible in a majority of the cases.
You would see marketers justifying these products by saying that the customers were suckers for not reading the TOS or that nothing was wrong with rebilling(citing Netflix, which is totally different; people knew it was a subscription unlike with these shady stuff) and stuff like that. It was amazing the lengths people went to fool themselves into thinking they weren't ripping people off.
We can see this happening in the case of SEO with many white hat sites employing black/gray hat techniques simply to maintain their current positions in Google.
Odesk and Elance. Only hire people who've worked on multiple projects and have high ratings. There are plenty of talented people out there.
> For the record the Yosemite issues are the most glaring ones.
I commiserate. Apple's arbitrary decisions on what APIs are deprecated in newer versions must be really frustrating for developers. One of many reasons I shy away from creating desktop applications.
Their hardware's actually decent, but they shamelessly ripoff Apple. They could have gone the route of providing the same hardware with stock android and getting treated like a credible company. Instead, they ripped off iOS wholesale.
The difference with this release is that it's a pretty big UI overhaul and some developer features such as storyboards for Mac aren't available on older versions. People who develop for the Mac or iOS have little choice but to upgrade.
I've been running Yosemite since DP 1, and haven't had any major problems yet. There are minor annoyances, but on the whole, Yosemite's feels like a step up over Mavericks(after using it for a little while). Although I should mention that I have a pretty beefy computer with 12Gigs of RAM and a decent graphics card.
Still, I don't see that as "unacceptable" behaviour. It's something to be frowned upon for sure and it would be great if she could be punctual all the time, but being the CEO of an incredibly large and diverse organisation, she could be forgiven if she was late due to some other meeting or work-related issues.
Also, remember she's getting only about 4 hours of sleep everyday and practically lives at her workplace, so I doubt she's being late on purpose.
That's a bit unfair. There are many mature(upwards 5 years of continuous development) UI components for javascript. Charts, Visualization, Data grids, UI Binding and pretty much anything an application would need are taken care of by some high-quality JS libraries.
Sifting through the various libraries to find one that fits the application is vastly preferable to having to write it by yourself.
