eddieh··on The August 17 outage
A link to a YouTube video without context e.g. summary of findings, primary author/creators, and primary citations, methodology, and so on is a next to useless for making a point. For all we know you’re linking to a crackpot or an industry sock puppet and I don’t care to “watch” any of what can potentially be a dubious video or worse a malicious video. It is your job as the linker to convince me the video is worth even one iota of my time.

On the other hand recent papers highlight the validity of concern/suspicion:

> This systematic review demonstrates that the environmental footprint of artificial intelligence is a structural and increasingly consequential challenge, shaped by interdependent decisions across algorithms, software pipelines, hardware infrastructures, and deployment contexts. The synthesized evidence shows that energy consumption and carbon emissions associated with AI systems are highly variable, context-dependent, and often underestimated — Beyond Efficiency: A Systematic Review of Energy Consumption and Carbon Footprint Across the AI Lifecycle (published in “Sustainability” an international, peer-reviewed, open-access journal) https://www.mdpi.com/2071-1050/18/3/1359

eddieh··on RaTeX: KaTeX-compatible LaTeX rendering engine in pure Rust
Customizing chapter styles, page styles, and headings was my sole reason for using the memoir class. I'm probably in the minority, that's true.
eddieh··on Screenshots of Old Desktop OSes
That Wikipedia article needs a better screenshot. Otherwise, very interesting. And DESQview/X was X Window System on DOS with pre-emptive multitasking, wow.
eddieh··on RaTeX: KaTeX-compatible LaTeX rendering engine in pure Rust
For me the memoir class made LaTeX worse. The titlesec package is more customizable, easier to use, and reduced the size of the preamble significantly.
eddieh··on John Ternus to become Apple CEO
Indeed those are pretty great, but none of those grow _on_ you.
eddieh··on F-15E jet shot down over Iran
Not really, if you're entering Iranian airspace from the Mediterranean, the Persian Gulf, or Europe, you're flying over either the Zagros Mountains or the Alborz Mountains. Unless you crash/eject in a city, you're almost certainly going to be in the mountains. Look at a map.
eddieh··on F-15E jet shot down over Iran
Iran isn't just central Tehran. Look up the Zagros Mountains and the Alborz Mountains. Or just look at a picture of the northern Tehran skyline, it is at the foot of the Alborz, a huge mountain range. There's plenty of woodlands and forest too. Some parts of the Hyrcanian forests get over 50 inches of annual rainfall, which isn't Forks, WA, but it is substantial.

Percival Lowell misunderstanding the Italian word “canali”[1] should rank pretty high in terms of similar phenomena and is probably the most impactful example.

eddieh··on Windows 11 is a minefield of micro-aggressions in the shipping lane of progress
From the Microsoft LTSC info:

> If you fail to activate this evaluation after installation, or if your evaluation period expires, the desktop background will turn black, you will see a persistent desktop notification indicating that the system is not genuine, and the PC will shut down every hour.

I was ready to grab a ISO, but this sounds pretty user hostile to me.

eddieh··on Asciinema: Record and share your terminal sessions
Touché.
eddieh··on Asciinema: Record and share your terminal sessions
Looks cool, but produce GIFs? Asciinema is text based IIRC.

The name is the downside of Asciinema IMO. Can’t help but read it as ASCII enema, which is funny, but not what I want think about. Just call it tty-player or something…

eddieh··on Mostly dead influential programming languages (2020)
Basically, writing a CS paper in LaTeX using the "alg*" packages (algorithm2e, algorithmicx, algorithms, algpseudocode, algxpar, algpseudocodex, etc.) is living in the ALGO 60 / ALGO 68 world. For the most part, nobody uses anything from the standards that would require superfluous explanations in a paper.
eddieh··on Mira Murati’s AI startup Thinking Machines valued at $12B in early-stage funding
The Cray machines looked more like an airport seating area. Or with later models, obstacles in a laser tag arena. While the Thinking Machines with the moving LEDs looked alive, almost like it was designed to be a character in a movie, which they became.

eddieh··on My iPhone 8 Refuses to Die: Now It's a Solar-Powered Vision OCR Server
The iPhone 8 was peak iPhone. I’m on my second iPhone 8 and am posting from it now.

I did also like the original iPhone SE mostly because of the size, but the haptics make the the iPhone 8, along with having a bezel, square screen, and home button.

eddieh··on Native frame transposition coming to Emacs 31
I’m confused, is this operating on Emacs’ frames or windows.

** For those here that are not Emacs users these terms mean the opposite of what you’re likely used to.

eddieh··on TinyX: Small Featured X Server
Actually, you don’t have that right. Most cities ban public nuisance noises such as blasting air horns.

You’re mostly free to do things that do not harm others. If you don’t like my speaking you can and should just move along. Blasting an air horn is not only harming me it harms everyone around you. Whereby you are interfering with everyone else’s right to not have public nuisances.

It isn’t remotely similar to what I’m saying anyway.

The free software foundation has brainwashed y’all to think less freedom is more freedom. And yes, I will die on this hill.

It isn’t my fault if you have an issue with objective reality.

eddieh··on TinyX: Small Featured X Server
There’s no argument for the change in the general case. There’s rationalizations, sure.

But no euphemisms like “public”, “free software”, “copyleft”, make the change anything less than taking away a freedom and calling it “free as in speech”.

eddieh··on String of recent killings linked to Bay Area 'Zizians'
WARNING: The Post Millennial is an extremist website.

I can’t believe that getting “news” about an extremist group from another extremist organization is a productive way to make sense of the world.

Honestly, read whatever you want but just be aware that radical extremist exist and commit horrific crimes and other radical extremist will exploit that.

It is radical extremism that’s dangerous in and of itself—not just a particular brand of radical extremism.

Carry on.

eddieh··on Asteroid Impact on Earth 2032 with Probability 1% and 8Mt Energy
Basically the same odds of dying in a car crash over your lifetime. So unless you give up on driving or being a passenger of a car—this is a meaningless risk, and besides that, it is even less likely to hit land, let alone a populated area. The chance that this will impact you is unbelievably low.

This is so below the threshold of worry, I’m shocked by the points and comments.

Schedule a colonoscopy, quit drinking, resign from your high stress job, drive less, get your moles checked; all better mitigation for prolonging you life than worrying about this.

eddieh··on LLMs Demonstrate Behavioral Self-Awareness [pdf]
HN link is not the paper’s title. Also doesn’t seem to be peer reviewed and isn’t even uploaded to a pre-print server like arXiv—literally hosted on GitHub.
eddieh··on IsMyXFeedFucked – Analyze How Your X Feed's Impacting You
Yes. Negatively.

Not sure analysis is needed. Algorithmic feeds are fucked and impact you negatively. All of them!

You have no real control over what you see, they're ephemeral, nobody has a shared experience, and that's _only a few_ things that are fucked.

eddieh··on Understanding Memory Management, Part 1: C
Too bad the first program in the article leaks its file descriptor.

Memory is but one resource you need to manage. File descriptors are the first oft overlooked resource in a long list of neglected finite resources.

eddieh··on Show HN: Filter out engagement bait and politics on your X/Twitter feed
It was much easier and healthier for me to just leave Twitter (never gonna call it the other name). In fact, I’ve left nearly all of social media. It would be nice to get away from all algorithmic content feeds. Maybe someday.
eddieh··on Chemists Create World's Thinnest Spaghetti
Exactly this! And you have to expect that as the diameter approaches zero your pasta becomes indistinguishable from a gelatinous lump of gluten aka paste.
eddieh··on Ask HN: If you were rewriting Emacs from scratch, what would you do differently?
When I saw “should be in rust” my instinct was to flame like nobody’s business, glad I kept reading. Lmao. Good slow burn.

Though, not to put too fine a point on it, I know it was in jest, but the core implementation language is the least of my concerns. As long as it is extremely portable, compiles fast, and runs on virtually anything, then whatever the core is, doesn’t matter much to me.

eddieh··on Greppability is an underrated code metric
I used to define functions as `funcname (arglist)`

And always call the function as `funcname(args)`

So definitions have a space between the name and arg parentheses, while calls do not. Seemed to work well, even in languages with extraneous keywords before definitions since space + paren is shorter than most keywords.

Now days I don’t bother since it really isn’t that useful especially with tags or LSP.

I still put the return type on a line of its own, not for search/grep, but because it is cleaner and looks nice to me—overly long lines are the ugliest of coding IMO. Well that and excessive nesting.

eddieh··on Kdenlive 24.02 open source video editor released
Lightworks hands down has the absolute best workflow for cutting and assembling video. Nothing else comes close. But like you said, they want you to pay for for anything above 720p. The downside is that it is really slow on my Core i9 Mac with 32 GB memory. The forums lead me to believe this is just an issue with the Mac platform, so Windows and Linux user probably don't experience this. I'm not saying it is slow at playback or seeking—it is really just the UI that's slow like there's a noticeable latency from a click to when a menu appears and don't even try dragging stuff around.

Avid Media Composer is also free but limited to 1080p and has many other limitations that can make it tricky for all but the simplest projects. Again, if you pay up you get what Hollywood editors use, but at $20 to $50 per month subscriptions isn't great for occasional use. It requires some setup and configuration that's not intuitive. I had to google how to have it use only one display and not to just assume I want it to take over all attached displays. It also has a bunch of DRM and copy protection crap that requires a bunch of additional programs and runs permanent Java processes.

Blender has a video editor. That much is true. It just isn't very good. Editing is imprecise and clumsy. You have to manually add frame allotments to the timeline if you go past the runtime. It's only saving grace is the ability to do 4K (probably higher if you want). There's no previewing a clip before you place it on the timeline. All editing is done on the timeline by positioning the playhead. There is an upfront cost for proxy editing, so if your source material is high resolution and long, expect to wait a long time for it to process the clips before you can play or edit them. I've found that when performance starts to suck you'll have to manually rebuild the proxies—maybe go to lunch.

I haven't tried Kdenlive, but its editing ability looks similar to Blender in that you have to put the clip on the timeline before doing anything. Coming from Lightworks or Media Composer this workflow sucks. I'm still going to give it a try, but I'm not sure it is for me.
