Can we see that? Bet it looks cool.
edoceo··on AI is forcing us to pay off 40 years of technical debt
When I did the EM role my biggest fights were pushing VPs to give the team more time. Features rushed because some VP told some board member it would be delivered by X. The first mistake is setting an aggressive schedule.

What language was a better choice than PHP in 2006? Or in 2001? Some times what we see (now) is a choice that looked like the best option (then) and only became less good over time. Humans do that pretty often?
edoceo··on Ask HN: Are you building your own personal webapps?
Dozens of them. The most useful in the house are the grocery list and the status-panel iPad. I wanted those tools but was always too busy, AI turned them both into one-evening projects. They are done and good-enough faster than I could evaluate the existing market offerings.

And some tools for my investing maths.

edoceo··on Kalshi and its co-founders face felony charges for violating Utah gambling laws
Same is true for (many) the other vices. Doesn't seem terrible for them. Much better than currently where Kalsho is twice in every NFL break, WNBA (Valkyries!), MLB, Yahoo Finance and commercial breaks on TNT and various Roku channels.

The States that permit cannabis have similar advertising restrictions. So does alcohol and other vices. Seems a fair & easy step to me.

Correct, and they are limited in features. I'm going to swap out this combo-modem+WiFi and get a dedicated -modem and then have a different device as my "edge" router/NAT

I'm on Comcast in USA, I BYOD for the router and it's a Netgear C3500 (I think). It gets new firmware pushed to it from Comcast. Can't even load your own manually.

Which Vanguard and at which weight?
edoceo··on U.S. workers took home their smallest share of capital since at least 1947
A disaster. Economy is a flow of capital, it cycles up. USA needs the general public to have money for necessities as well as a little more for saving and then extras.

Top earnings come from the support of 1000s of participants with lesser earnings. This is an unhealthy economic trend. It's more than a stagnation risk.

Issues like these are created in a short term but take comparatively longer to correct.

edoceo··on Ask HN: Which TV do you recommend for privacy?
I got 2 of these, Amazon, 65inch. When I purchased (years ago) Amazon said "only 8 left". This TV is so dumb its clock is still in 1989. Three HDMI so it's got a Sworch2, Roku and a vSee box on it.

I was so/so on the purchase but after watching all the heck around 'smart" TVs I'm wondering what I'll do when these die. They were like 50% cost of the industrial display category, which seems my only option in the future.

Hoping these LLMs get us to jailbroken TVs soon.

There is a massive "clipping" universe. Not a golden goose but I'm sure a significant revenue driver (like in Shorts)

Gemini has access to the web. It should have had access to this, if not even already known some of these rules.

Admittedly, it could be promting issue, lots of context for these decisions.

The PHP2Shell one was both lucrative and exhausting. I maintain a bunch of legacy PHP apps.

I'm 1 for 6. And my current firm is overworked. I'm moving to do it myself (three companies, fund admin and personal). Recently Found a Tax-Accountant, not a CPA, who does advice only, no paperwork, who I'm using to cross-check my AI tools.

I had Gemini help me with RMD calculations for an estate I manage. Advice was mostly good. Wrong about withholding for both US and CA. Missed deductions on US. Was accurate on MFJ and spousal death impacts.

I've found it so far more effective for preparation than for planning/advice.

I've got a plan to feed the laws and rules and instructions into the machine before the prompts - is RAG still cool? Maybe I should small-language this?
