Can someone that's worked at one of these big companies honestly explain how it happens that when these guys are down, it's never for like 10-15 mins ... it's always 1-2+ hours? Do they not have mechanisms in place to revert their migrations and deployments? What goes on behind the scenes during these "outages"?

Cloudflare Images dot not require you to pre-define variants ... That's incorrect. I have multiple sites using it in production where I generate any size variant on the fly. It works exactly the same as you're stating that yours does.

Cloudflare Images does this and it places the transformations in its CDN as well. What do I get from this that I don't get from them?

Simplest way is create a Google Slides and export a PDF or images for slides ... then vibe code something that ties the left menu to slide switching on the right side.

If you "Inspect" on your browser, you can see that each slide on the page is a JPG so he's probably doing something similar.

Imagine being site-engineer managing that infra...

Always have some type of demo without requiring a login/signup. You lose out on so many people like me that just immediately close as soon as I find out that I can't see what it is without signing up.

Why do you sound so petty? Do you understand every single layer of the stack below you? Do you understand how your code gets translated down to C, assembly, machine code? How all that becomes electrical signals on a PCB? How the material properties work at the physical level and how its manufactured? Because if you don't, aren't you, myself and basically everyone relying on the 'magic' words of others?

If you're trying to accomplish X, how much does all this matter directly related to X? There's always infinite number of things to learn about and depth in every dimension. We explore depth where we are each personally curious or where its necessary.

Why 52 and not 26? or 104? The number is arbitrary - it's much better to ask yourself - what questions do you have about the world? what is something that I'm curious about? Then find recommendations from Reddit, HN or even the chatbots about the best books of that topic.

Example: I want to improve my ability to write with a richer vocabulary so therefore I should probably find the best English classics and authors known for their vocabulary (Shakespeare, Joyce..). What are 1-2 books by each of them? Read them -- learn with intention -- and it will not feel like a chore that requires you to "stay motivated" and you'll just do it.

You could easily read a self-help book in a day. A classic might take you a month. A textbook probably a couple of months. Speaking from experience, focus less on the number and finding quality things consume that will teach you something meaningful and long-lasting.

The beauty of Loom is that once you have it installed, either Desktop or Chrome, its one button - record a video, auto-generates the link, and you can immediately send off. I used it a ton, both as a software eng and with designers to better communicate back and forth things in my environment that would be wordy or hard to communicate.

I would imagine that if I worked on mobile apps instead of web ones, the benefit of a tool like this would be if I could click a button and have the same experience from my laptop/computer.

When I worked on a mobile app for a startup earlier this year, I'd use the Screen Recording, and then send it to myself through Whatsapp, then on my Mac send it off to the person I was targeting.

If I could use the app, record a video, and then have that auto-generate the URL and then have that immediately available on your platform so I can see that URL on my computer after refreshing, that would be quite handy.

Obviously a lot of footage in investigations does not reach the public, during active ones or even after. But if you've followed these stories it seems liket between the Brown shooting and the Kirk/Utah shooting, there is a potential concern with universities not having security footage in certain areas of their campus? Has anyone else inquired more into this?

I use this for booting up S3-compatible buckets for local development and testing -- paired up with s5cmd, I can seed 15GB and over 60,000 items (seed/mock data) in < 60s... have a perfect replica of a staging environment with Docker containers (api, db, cache, objects) all up in less than 2mins. Super simple to set up for my case and been working great.

Previously I used LocalStack S3 but ultimately didn't like the lack of persistance thats not available on the OSS verison. MinIO OSS is apparently no longer maintained? Also looked at SeaweedFS and RustFS but from a quick reading into them this once was the easiest to set up.

I will try Gitea -- thanks everyone for the recommendations

This is my first comment on HN despite being a user for over a decade -- this is one of the most outrageous pricing changes I've encountered - I couldn't believe it when I read the email earlier (I run self-hosted runners).

Anyone using GitLab or any other VCM that you'd recommend? I'm absolutely done with Github. Or is everything else just as bad?
