edverma2··on Show HN: Pi pod – Run your pi coding agent in sandboxes on your own server
Yeah when you self-host pipod, all of your pi sessions are running on your own VM. Within that VM, each pi session runs in its own container.
edverma2··on Show HN: Pi pod – Run your pi coding agent in sandboxes on your own server
> Would pi-pod allow me to standardize pi config on a team/project level so that other people in my org can also use them on the same private infra?

Yep!

edverma2··on Show HN: Pi pod – Run your pi coding agent in sandboxes on your own server
Yeah, I loved the alliteration with pi but expected this would come at the cost of some slight confusion
edverma2··on Show HN: Pi pod – Run your pi coding agent in sandboxes on your own server
The main benefits for using pi pod versus running pi on a server is the native mobile apps and environment composability. The cli experience has also been made really nice with pi pod, the tui is rendered locally so user key input does not lag over the ssh connection.

For you the main benefit would probably be portability via the mobile app. The mobile app is not released yet but you can build it yourself from the swift/kotlin source in the github repository.

Otherwise, the main benefit here is for people to be able to clearly define all of their pi and agent config at the org, user, and project level. This most directly benefits teams of people working together, but I also find it helps me as a single user working on multiple projects on multiple devices.

edverma2··on Writing by hand is good for your brain
> I use a lot of moleskine notebooks and Mead comp books, which I can buy in bulk online.

Moleskine notebooks are beautiful, but I always felt they were far too expensive. Would love to learn where they can be bought in bulk for a more reasonable price.

edverma2··on OpenAI, the US government and Persona built an identity surveillance machine
This is a hilarious personal website! Love it. Even better that it's paired with quality content.
edverma2··on Claude Sonnet 4.6
It seems that extra-usage is required to use the 1M context window for Sonnet 4.6. This differs from Sonnet 4.5, which allows usage of the 1M context window with a Max plan.

```
/model claude-sonnet-4-6[1m]
⎿ API error: 429 {"type":"error","error": {"type":"rate_limit_error","message":"Extra usage is required for long context requests."},"request_id":"[redacted]"}
```

edverma2··on Another GitHub outage in the same day
I was just looking into this today but it seems pricey. $29/user/month for basic features like codeowners and defining pr approval requirements. Going with Forgejo.
edverma2··on GitHub is down again
Anyone have alternatives to recommend? We will be switching after this. Already moved to self-hosted action runners and we are early-stage so switching cost is fairly low.

edverma2··on America’s semiconductor boom [video]
Does America need to produce the talent or can they import it?
edverma2··on GPT-5 Thinking in ChatGPT (a.k.a. Research Goblin) is good at search
From GPT-5-Pro with Deep Research selected:

> FWIW Deep Research doesn’t run on whatever you pick in the model selector. It’s a separate agent that uses dedicated o‑series research models: full mode runs on o3; after you hit the full‑mode cap it auto‑switches to a lightweight o4‑mini version. The picker governs normal chat (and the pre‑research clarifying Qs), not the research engine itself.

edverma2··on A staff engineer's journey with Claude Code
I built a tool to split up a single PR into multiple nice commits: https://github.com/edverma/git-smart-squash
edverma2··on Show HN: Ten years of running every day, visualized
This is so cool. Congrats on ten years!
edverma2··on I scanned all of GitHub's "oops commits" for leaked secrets
All devs should run open-source trufflehog as a precommit hook for all repositories on their local system. It’s not a foolproof solution, but it’s a small time investment to get set up and gives me reasonable assurance that I will not accidentally commit a secret. I’m unsure why this is not more widely considered standard practice.
edverma2··on Show HN: Tool to Automatically Create Organized Commits for PRs
Interesting! I’ve faced the same problem where I have a mega PR and spend a lot of time breaking that up into separate PRs. I agree that what you are suggesting is a different but related problem to what this tool currently solves. I’ll start thinking through how this would look, and I’ll go ahead and make a GitHub issue if you or anyone else wants to start a discussion there.
edverma2··on Librarians are dangerous
Why do people speak online as if the library is a place anyone goes to? I understand some people still go to libraries, but this cannot be considered a commonplace activity like it once was. Librarians do not hold any meaningful position in society because so few people come in contact with them.
edverma2··on Mark Zuckerberg paid lobby$7.6M to aid in TikTok ban
This seems like a very small amount of money to pay to help remove your biggest competitor in your largest market.

edverma2··on Show HN: Meet.hn – Meet the Hacker News community in your city
very cool! I'm surprised there are no signups in SF yet. I'm sure many will come.
edverma2··on Ask HN: What are you working on (August 2024)?
https://thetickerscreen.com

A huge sports LED ticker screen. It’s been an interesting experience. Hardware is hard. But people love it when they see it and seem to be really excited for it.

edverma2··on The Right Kind of Stubborn
This seems timely in regards to the US Presidential race.
edverma2··on Quality software deserves your hard‑earned cash
Does anyone have good examples of software that meets this criteria? Or places where this type of software can be found? I love the idea here and would love to put it into practice but among the disadvantages that small makers suffer against large industry is easy discoverability for their products.
