effdee··on Qwen3-Coder writes less secure code when told it's for a US persona
Not sure if I'd trust a Chinese model that was brainbeeped by an Israeli company any more than the original model.
effdee··on Transfer files over an Ethernet patch cable
Btw, tar(1) on MacOS shows the file currently being processed when you hit Ctrl-T (i.e. when it receives SIGINFO).

And talking about signals, dd(1) can show the amount of data it has processed as well as the throughput. The signal depends on the implementation(e.g. SIGINFO for MacOS, SIGUSR1 for GNU).

How about 0x2007BEE2?
effdee··on Qwen 3.8 27B
Well, this universe might be God's own AI slop.
effdee··on Qwen 3.8 27B
Some people will now argue it was the chisel—not Michelangelo—who created David.
effdee··on Don't be a meat proxy
As a side note: This is the most impressive page I have laid eyes on in a very long time. Nothing but calm and content. Beautiful!
effdee··on Turkey unveils new missile, AI touts as able to hit US mainland
Is it just me or is Turkey being put in the rogue state corner recently?
effdee··on Your phone is about to stop being yours
> they do not actually give the user access to general purpose computing in the sense that the users can control exactly what computations the device is going to execute

What prevents the creation of an App that allows one to do exactly that?

effdee··on Game devs explain the tricks involved with letting you pause a game
If your game uses more than 1% CPU and 1% GPU when paused you're doing something wrong.

A damn blurred screenshot should not make the GPU consume hundreds of Watts.

effdee··on Solar Balconies Take Europe by Storm
If port 502/TCP is open you can probably access it via Modbus protocol. Implementing a Modbus client is trivial.

My rebranded Fox ESS hardware has it enabled and there's even official documentation of the so-called "registers".

effdee··on Ape Coding [fiction]
I prefer the term "classic coding".
effdee··on SmartOS
The first link's broken as it includes the semicolon.
effdee··on Tesla’s 4680 battery supply chain collapses as partner writes down deal by 99%
There's a slash missing at the end.
effdee··on The Programmer Identity Crisis
Hint: click it!
effdee··on The Programmer Identity Crisis
The use of HAL 9000 in the top divider is a nice touch.
effdee··on NASA chief suggests SpaceX may be booted from moon mission
Regarding 1, that's like saying the Mongols beat the US at owning China (and most of Asia for that matter) by 700 years. And counting.
effdee··on Surveillance data challenges what we thought we knew about location tracking
Tobias Engel's initial video about this was "Locating Mobile Phones using SS7" given at the 25C3 in 2008:

effdee··on Numbering should start at zero (1982)
Let's also add a link to the handwritten version for good taste:

effdee··on Google's Results Are Infested, Open AI Is Using Their Playbook from the 2000s
So... the next step clearly is ChatGPT adding Ads to its output.
effdee··on VW breach exposes location of 800k electric vehicles
> I'd rather focus on standardizing a transparent and privacy safe way to gather these metrics. Consumers would know what metrics are collected and there would be guarantees that privacy is kept.

I'd rather see laws to have it disabled by default. People who don't mind can then opt-in again.

effdee··on Conversations are better with four people
Four people seems to be an interesting threshold when it comes to groups. The British special forces, for example, started doing four man teams and several units of other countries followed their example (SEALS, KSK, etc).

effdee··on Go-Safeweb
The phrase "SSL added and removed here" from an NSA slide comes to mind.
effdee··on The mystery of why left-handers are so much rarer (2016)
I used to have the same problem. Switching from pencils and pens to keyboards fixed it for me. :)
effdee··on We could be witnessing the death of the graphics card in real time
Graphics cards are already dead for me (as a causual gamer). I recently bought a used notebook with a 12th Gen Intel Core processor and it can run an impressive list of games.
effdee··on Better Dotfiles
One version of this is to use a bare repo, as described in https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=11070797
effdee··on Cough or sneeze? How the brain knows what to unleash
A sneeze-hickup combo is also _very_ painful.
effdee··on Firefox Sidebar and Vertical tabs: try them out
I still miss the flexibility of the originals Opera's UI. As well as the built-in email client.

effdee··on The Scale of Life
Fantastic. But needs support for URL parameters to change things like the default units.
effdee··on The effect of daily usage of Mouthwash on the oropharyngeal microbiome
Thank you for sharing this! My 5-year-old daughter occasionally has canker sores. I just checked her toothpaste and it contains SLS.
effdee··on Using a 1965 Dutch Rotary Phone via VoIP (T65) in 2024
Newer ones also support it. Here's a list (if the green column says "ja" it's supported):

The footnote mentions that the rotary dial's timing must be correct.
