efskap··on LLM Voice
How do you recognize sysco wrappers? Any particular signs to look out for? I guess the big one is a mismatch between the size of the menu and the size of the kitchen.
efskap··on Dots: Always-on agents
But BERT's name led to some wonderfully named spinoffs like CamemBERT and FlauBERT for French, as well as ALBERT, RoBERTa, etc.
efskap··on Google’s Project Suncatcher to put ML infrastructure in space
Right, the goal here is a more realistic Dyson swarm, not a Dyson sphere (yet)
efskap··on Claude discovers a novel enzyme system with CRISPR-like repeats
Predicting reality, under the "controlled hallucination" framing, corrected by sensory error signals. The brain has no access to ground truth, only input data that helps correct the hallucination.
efskap··on Claude Code from Source
Easier than reading the source myself, but I don't think the site makes a good case for why I SHOULD apply CC's patterns to my own systems, besides it being the most used harness. It's clearly useful software, but that doesn't _necessarily_ translate to something to learn from.

It is apparently a vibecoded mess: https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=47772282

efskap··on Tiny $70 Xteink X3 e-reader
It's an additional layer on top of the eink that has to diffuse light from the side. It's bound to reduce contrast at least a little
efskap··on NEO Emacs – GPU-Accelerated Emacs Powered by Rust
There's an interesting prompting technique for this that asks the model to start with a random string that is then manipulated into the answer: https://pub.sakana.ai/ssot/
efskap··on Ask HN: Why were OpenAI, Claude, and Grok simultaneously down?
This is like the Bronze Age collapse when city-states fell one by one to displaced demand, under the refugee interpretation of the Sea Peoples.
efskap··on Claude Fable 5.1 and Claude Mythos 5.1
Only in South Asian varieties of English apparently: https://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/of#Pronunciation
efskap··on Claude Fable 5.1 and Claude Mythos 5.1
They sound exactly the same to me.

Wiktionary gives <should've> as /ˈʃʊdəv/, unstressed <have> as /(h)əv/ and unstressed <of> as /əv/.

The best of both worlds would be achieved by elastic tabstops. https://nick-gravgaard.com/elastic-tabstops/

If only they took off.

And these are the guys who invented transformers! How?
efskap··on “I just chose words carefully”
Well, estimating string length of tokens is much like counting R's in strawberry.
efskap··on M5Stack Launches PaperMono
There's a reason it stands for Bring Over Another Thousand
efskap··on Show HN: I made a Raspberry with Qwen my local car AI
Yeah referencing is the way to go, as even finetuning probably captures style more than concrete facts. I know with large context windows we don't really RAG anymore, but for owner's manual lookup with a smaller model it seems ideal.

Something every LLM user ends up learning is that they're far better used as search and summarization tools than as knowledge databases in themselves.

efskap··on Claudette: Make Claude stop talking like a BuzzFeed article
But comments should hopefully explain "why", not what or how, and that kind of context is exactly what an LLM is likely to be missing
efskap··on How Bluesky draws its logo on screenshots
I guess it would need permissions, but you can monitor the photo library with PHPhotoLibraryChangeObserver and check if a new item's subtype is photoScreenshot.

Otherwise userDidTakeScreenshotNotification only fires for your own app

efskap··on How Bluesky draws its logo on screenshots
The app actually is notified after the screenshot is taken: https://developer.apple.com/documentation/uikit/uiapplicatio...

Android does it too: https://developer.android.com/about/versions/14/features/scr...

efskap··on The Indo-European Family Tree
Yeah, it's not a clean inheritance but lots of linguistic contact and negotiation.

And crucially it's not just other IE-adjacent languages but the Pre-IE substrate. So many Greek words are inherited from the mysterious languages that were there before, of which we only know through the marks they left on ours.

efskap··on Where did the old web go? We followed 657,607 links to find out
It's the great irony of digital media. Copying data is accurate to the bit and is preserved "as-is", but in practice, it requires someone to maintain servers, to care about it. To separate out what is worth preserving.

We hot-linked to all those image hosts because we couldn't imagine them disappearing.

Archive.org had incredible foresight and if it didn't already exist, I'd call such a project a pipe dream.

efskap··on Thanks to social media, canned sardines are a scarcity on the supermarket shelf
"Lab" grown meat of the aquatic variety has been around for eons in the form of mussels and other bivalves. No central nervous system to suffer, similar nutritional profile that fills in plant-based gaps, extracts nutrients from the water instead of polluting it, and grown on ropes.

However the concern here is not just finding something tasty for humans to eat.

efskap··on Prime Agent: A self-improving RLM agent
I dig the spirit, but if I'm meant to understand it in an afternoon, why is it codegolfed to such an extent? It's like reading the output of a minifier, not idiomatic Go.
efskap··on Quake – 30th Anniversary Update
But that means it had to be a trend already to be overrepresented in the training corpus, right? Or was it just something the RLHF evaluators got a kick out of...
efskap··on GitLost: We Tricked GitHub's AI Agent into Leaking Private Repos
It's a menu with natural language search and potentially natural language form input.
efskap··on Camera with transparent display launches for the equivalent of $29
Maybe even an off-the-shelf microlouver privacy screen protector?
efskap··on Giant trees have no trouble pumping water to top branches: new research
Similarly, it blows my mind that all trees are made of air, specifically the carbon in it. I used to think that the biomass must come from the soil, but reality is more interesting.
efskap··on Steam Machine launches today
It's doesn't have to be non-gaming purposes. Say you want to install something not sold on Steam like I dunno, World of Warcraft, or Minecraft.
efskap··on How do flocking birds and schools of fish move?
That's a really cool connection, and even the Wikipedia article mentions the similarity to birds. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Peloton#Formations

It doesn't mention V shapes, though. I guess since a cyclist isn't generating lift, there are no wingtip vortices to exploit by forming such a shape.

> The shape or formation of the peloton changes according to multiple factors. Comparatively high power output efforts due to high-speeds on flat topography, a strong headwind or inclines (hills) tends to spread out or lengthen the formation, often into single file. A slow pace or brisk tailwind in which cyclists' power outputs are low result in compact formations such that riders ride side-by-side, often filling roads from one side to the other.

efskap··on Modos Color Monitor Pushes E-Paper Displays Further
Ah, thanks for clarifying. Fenix 8 Solar is still MIPS but I can see why AMOLED is the "premium default" that they'd de-emphasize in their flagships. MIPS just shines less in the showroom, and doesn't have the phone display parity people expect.

I can't see them ever removing it from the Instinct line though, as that's the rugged one that signals tool.

efskap··on Modos Color Monitor Pushes E-Paper Displays Further
> Garmin discontinuing their e-paper smartwatches

Wait what? Do you have a source? I can't find anything about that, and I see the Instinct 3 is still being sold. Very disappointing if so, as that line has been the perfect pebble replacement for me.
