egfx··on Over 50% of CEOs say they’re considering cutting jobs over the next 6 months
not so fast

egfx··on Putin annexes four regions of Ukraine in major escalation of Russia’s war
They’ll never take Odessa.
egfx··on Penpot, Open Source Figma alternative, raises $8M in funding
Holy cow. Wow. This image really opened my eyes to the design world. I’m just personally wondering whatever happened with “an eye for design” and intuition.
egfx··on Ask HN: What platforms have the fastest 3rd party app approval process?
Chrome web store. Avoid Shopify at all costs.
egfx··on Ask HN: Why Adobe still can’t figure out Flash on WASM?
It’s not just about AlbinoBlacksheep and NewGrounds. Flash was the most consequential technology on the web’s frontend prior to and even after html5. It was enabled on a staggering 98% of web browsers. So much so it was basically synonymous with web browsing. You can trace the trail of flash to the invention and adoption of social media. There would be no MySpace, no YouTube and Meebo. The internet would have had a completely different story.
egfx··on Ask HN: How to Finish Projects?
It’s an odd thing but the way I work on projects is I acquire a high quality domain name upfront and then work on whatever the domain name is. The interestingness of the domain focuses me to produce quality work so as to live up to the domain name. I can’t do this with every domain I own but I’ve done this with more then a handful.
egfx··on Cannot read clipboard from service worker in a MV3 chrome extension (2020)
This. When an extension is installed the privacy sandbox is removed. Google manually audits each extensions code and looks out for bad behavior. You cannot call out to external scripts or use mangled source code.
egfx··on Ask HN: Is the tech industry out of ideas?
> It's a decentralized future of autonomous, interoperable communities with their own infrastructure who have power over what they choose to be and what happens to what they are and have.

So basically “Web3”

egfx··on Burn All GIFs (2000)

egfx··on TikTok has arisen; Facebook usage has dropped; Instagram, Snapchat have grown
Discord is conspicuously missing from this list.

egfx··on AI-Generated News Stories
Talk about fake news.
egfx··on 52% of YouTube videos live in 2010 have been deleted
Was better as an auto looping gif with auto playing music. This is zombocom 2.0
egfx··on AI image generation: more creative control
I’m sure Nvidia is thrilled that Facebook (meta) is taking credit for their work: https://youtu.be/eaSTGOgO-ss
egfx··on The History of User Interfaces
Browsing 1992 through 1995 gave me tears. Btw, where is Vista, ME, or Windows 98, or 7 for that matter? Vista had an especially unique UI with Aero and Windows 7 was an adaptation of that I believe.
egfx··on Deepest infrared image of universe
genuinely curious if the advancements of AI image generation and editing tools can assist with using this data to produce some approaching realism.
egfx··on Show HN: Copy React code from any site
This is like SnappySnippet, https://chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/snappysnippet/mdmg...

And it’s open source. This file does all the parsing magic to get clean html.

egfx··on LG 28-inch 16:18 DualUp Monitor
I don’t know about terminals but having live reload on multiple monitors is a god send for frontend developer productivity. You’re experimenting most of the time.
egfx··on Ask HN: How did Magic Leap become irrelevant?
Hey don’t forget Motorola flip phone, Nokia and windows phone with metro ui.

Technologically, social media could have come a decade before it was made popular. Similarly for AR (agreed) I don’t believe there is a technological hurdle here. There will be some magic app or use case that will get everyone to jump onboard, maybe like how everyone jumped on the iPod. It wasn’t about the device even though it was impeccable.

But maybe the world just needs (wants) light weight “They Live” sunglasses creepy that meta might be the company that actually makes it real.

egfx··on Ask HN: How do you build a real startup, and not a feature?
If a feature has paying customers it’s a startup. A feature is something you would open source.
egfx··on Why isn't the internet more fun and weird? (2019)
I’ve built something different that I blog about with a show and tell. I love my product but the weird thing is dev.to the perfect portal to blog about such things is shadowbanned on HN.
egfx··on Show HN: Codesearch.ai – Semantic Code Search
This is a very important feature. It’s not enough to have the user add more text to the box. I’m on mobile and it’s hard. There should be a toggle on every page prominently displayed that allows you to filter by programming language. Its the reason I came here to comment after trying to make it useful for me. I actually really like this!
egfx··on Ask HN: Anyone ever consider bringing a coding exercise for the interviewers
I’ve thought about this. It’s at best passive aggressive. Definitely don’t do it. Among the innovative interview techniques I have yet to see is one where the interviewee is allowed to customize the process. If you have projects you can showcase let’s see them, if not take this test. Seems simple but alien to anyone I’ve mentioned this too.
egfx··on Hilarious 'Web 3 Console' Will Never, Ever Happen
I thought this was about using Web3 via the console as a service. I was truly intrigued and interested, not anymore.
egfx··on Show HN: Walker.js – open-source, vendor-agnostic autotrack library
it's complicated ;) Why do you think you can help?
egfx··on Show HN: Walker.js – open-source, vendor-agnostic autotrack library
Is this purely for analytics and listening for events? I would like the opposite, walking through an event list to mechanize UI on the frontend without an extension or from node (just via a front-end script tag). I bookmarked something like this once.
egfx··on Ask HN: What do you do to receive honest feedback for your products?
It’s interesting that you picked up on this. I tweeted about it https://twitter.com/chamILYAn/status/1379140215407747073
egfx··on Ask HN: Do we need Web Browsers?
What you described is the read only web. I think we’re 2 internet versions past this. 4 according to Twitter.
egfx··on I replicated an $86M project in 57 lines of code
