eggnet··on Ask HN: Why were OpenAI, Claude, and Grok simultaneously down?
If it does exist, why would it work this way, and not the obvious way of streaming logs… which would not cause an outage if it failed.
eggnet··on GPT-6 Astra
AI was supposed to mean artificial intelligence. It was hijacked, and AGI was coined to be the name of actual AI. Since we are apparently redefining AGI, what will the real artificial intelligence be called?
eggnet··on Saving 100 terabytes of memory by optimizing 1.1.1.1's DNS cache
They’re adding the cache consumed across all of their servers. It’s not one giant deep cache.
eggnet··on Claude writing a macOS driver for my obscure HP printer built only for Windows
I wonder how hard it would be to create various firmware updaters for drives or other devices.
eggnet··on The arguments against open source AI are bad
Trust shifts to the producer of the open weight model, based on the global communicated experience of all models they’ve ever produced.
eggnet··on The arguments against open source AI are bad
It has already happened and the open weight models will only improve. Best to accept that and determine the optimal way forward.
eggnet··on Introduction to UEFI HTTP(s) Boot with QEMU/OVMF
TLS also allows for the contents of a boot image to be hidden from others.
eggnet··on Dopamine Fracking
The lack of ads, and the algorithm for sorting the feed.

I think the spectrum runs from social media, to forum, to news feed… maybe other things. HN isn’t toxic.

eggnet··on Anthropic, please ship an official Claude Desktop for Linux
I assume it would be chrome debug, and their chrome plugin, like it is on macos and windows. They could punt arbitrary app control easily enough.
eggnet··on Moving beyond fork() + exec()
That happens with execve(). clone() allows you to not copy the page table prior to the execve() call.
eggnet··on Fabricked: Misconfiguring Infinity Fabric to Break AMD SEV-SNP
Yes, it is. You do have to have some infrastructure you trust somewhere to validate an attestation report from the confidential VM.
eggnet··on Fabricked: Misconfiguring Infinity Fabric to Break AMD SEV-SNP
There are microcode updates for this already https://www.amd.com/en/resources/product-security/bulletin/a...
eggnet··on The occasional ECONNRESET
That’s for rx, not tx. When you close a socket with data in the send buffer, that does not trigger a RST. If you just close the socket normally.
eggnet··on Apple fixes bug that cops used to extract deleted chat messages from iPhones
Signal doesn’t provide anything in the message other than… “there are pending messages.” Signal wakes up, fetches them, then generates notifications on the phone itself.
eggnet··on FBI used iPhone notification data to retrieve deleted Signal messages
That doesn’t solve the problem. You have to configure Signal to not send the information in the notification.
eggnet··on The U.S. Government Just Followed Through on Its Ban of DJI Drones
Will Foxconn and other Chinese manufacturers be less involved in Vietnam? How much less?
eggnet··on BYD Sells 4.6M Vehicles in 2025, Meets Revised Sales Goal
I assume you're joking, but this is just sales tax.
eggnet··on Claude Skills are awesome, maybe a bigger deal than MCP
In general, markdown refers to CommonMark and derivatives now. I’d be surprised if that wasn’t the case here.
eggnet··on RFK Jr demanded a vaccine study be retracted – the journal said no
We know aluminum accumulates in the brain at a rate that is indistinguishable between vaccinated and unvaccinated people.

In other words, we know where the aluminum is not coming from, namely, vaccines.

Goullé JP, Grangeot-Keros L. Aluminum and vaccines: Current state of knowledge. Med Mal Infect 2020 Feb;50:16-21.

https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S0399077X1...

Although aluminum at high doses can cause a variety of clinical manifestations, the quantity of aluminum in vaccines is too small to cause a direct toxic effect. Indeed, the quantity of aluminum in biological specimens from those receiving aluminum-containing vaccines is indistinguishable from unvaccinated subjects. The concern that aluminum in vaccines might be associated with a rare autoimmune disease called macrophagic myofasciitis has been refuted by previous studies.

eggnet··on RFK Jr demanded a vaccine study be retracted – the journal said no
It's more than "not known to be from vaccines." It is known to not be from vaccines, the amount of aluminum is far too high.
eggnet··on RFK Jr demanded a vaccine study be retracted – the journal said no
> I also would like it if they did a placebo controlled study of vaccines with aluminum vs no vaccine

If this is what you meant, there are already studies covering this.

If you instead meant to say a study comparing vaccines with aluminum to the same vaccine without, there are those studies as well.

eggnet··on HHS Winds Down mRNA Vaccine Development Under BARDA
This comment is too indirect to be useful. Can you be more explicit?
eggnet··on The tools I love are made by awful people
The definition of slippery slope, right here.
eggnet··on After 'coding error' triggers firings, top NIH scientists called back to work
But we aren’t talking about firing one person. There are macro effects to firing people at this scale and shutting down whole departments. Not to mention the fact that it is illegal.
eggnet··on U.S. national-security leaders included me in a group chat
No, that was not suggested. You are not arguing in good faith.
eggnet··on Disclosure of personal information to DOGE “is irreparable harm,” judge rules
That will require inoculating the population against propaganda.
eggnet··on We are the builders
The trust would have to divest and reinvest everything. Otherwise it’s not blind. Simpler to just have people like that not qualify for office when they have clear conflicts of interest.
eggnet··on Some things to expect in 2025
Then the programming language becomes natural language and you’ll have to be very good at describing what you want. Unless you are talking about AGI, aka, the singularity. Which is a whole other topic.
eggnet··on Platforms systematically removed a user because he made "most wanted CEO" cards
You realize that functional governments won’t let this happen.
