ehershey··on The Exponential Time Hypothesis Is False [pdf]
I like this https://www.reddit.com/r/explainlikeimfive/comments/33fmrq/e...

In computer science, the satisfiability problem is the task of determining whether a boolean problem can be satisfied, that is, made to be true, by some combination of inputs. For example, the expression: A AND NOT B is satisfied whenever A is true and B is false, while the expression: A AND NOT A cannot be satisfied.
A naive approach to satisfiablilty would be to check every possible input and see if the expression evaluates to true.
However, the number of combinations that must be checked is 2n, where n is the number of variables in the expression. This is what is meant by exponential time.
The exponential time hypothesis conjectures that you cannot do better, that is, the number of operations needed to solve satisfiability will always be exponential in the size of the problem, no matter what algorithm is chosen.
If this hypothesis is true, it would imply that P≠NP, because satisfiability has been shown to be in NP, and in order for it to be in P there would have to exist an algorithm that solves it in polynomial time.
ehershey··on Why is Cloudflare Pages' bandwidth unlimited?
> the page you're reading now is ~2.2MB, which is in line with typical page weights of ~2.7MB these days

For a small mostly-text blog post? Wtf are you talking about? That’s absurd.

ehershey··on Show HN: I made a puzzle game that gently introduces my favorite math mysteries
Wow what a fun little interesting time. My wife and I made it to the end on mobile!

And from 2010. I missed both facts despite reading the whole darn thing.
ehershey··on A terrible schema from a clueless programmer
Proud of myself for recognizing the conceit (pun intended) here pretty quickly. Good point in the end too!
ehershey··on Google DNS at 010.010.010.010
Did google get slashdotted by hacker news? The “getting started” link at the bottom gives me an internal server error.

ehershey··on Have you ever hurt yourself from your own code?
I enjoyed this. In particular the drawn diagram and:

> Look at an audio file's waveform before playing it at max volume.

That’s always good advice.

ehershey··on Why and how GitHub is adopting OpenTelemetry
What do you mean by “sanitizing” the sdk’s? Did you remove the OpenTelemetry package?
ehershey··on The California Exception
They do the same thing for digital-only subscriptions.
ehershey··on Efficiency Is the Enemy
There’s this, a close match: “There is surely nothing quite so useless as doing with great efficiency what should not be done at all.”

ehershey··on Five years ago, I hit a woman with my car on I-75
I've had horrible luck driving cars - thankfully nothing as bad as injuring humans or colliding with oncoming traffic, but I've come close. The stakes - and expenses - are so high compared to other forms of transportation. I prefer cycling although doing it in NYC I don't know if it's actually rationally safer or cheaper than living elsewhere with a car.

OT: Why is this a link to twitter and not to the article referenced in the tweet? There's no other content there.

Thanks for this! Seriously I’m a tab minimalist and this narrative is a great explanation of how “the other half” lives.
ehershey··on Changes at Basecamp
You’ve got it exactly backwards. Committees take away autonomy by introducing external influence. Politics by definition is guiding policy, not acting with purpose within the confines of policy.

ehershey··on I'd like to review your README
This is brilliant!

It’s one of those things that’s so easy to forget or not even think about but once you see it or think about it, it’s essential.

That shade map is awesome!

Does it include buildings? (Could it, if not?) I’ve been dying for this for ages.

ehershey··on Time flies in Google Earth’s biggest update in years
I found the “subjective” comment easier to understand than this one. Not every opinion or generalization requires citation. Your stance and reply are also subjective. I do prefer quantitative data and references, especially when the topic is at all scientific. It doesn’t automatically make qualitative or broad statements pointless though. It especially doesn’t mean they don’t contribute to understanding.

Thanks for the concrete examples! I love it.

These statements appear contradictory.

ehershey··on Free for Developers
> Heroku-specific things, that you'll just have to reinvent/relearn/etc if you ever want to switch providers. To call it "vendor lock-in" might be a bit of a stretch

It’s an understatement, not a stretch.

Heroku has always seemed really interesting/cool/clever to me. The tradeoff has never been worth the investment when I’ve considered using them, personally or professionally. Their operating model is far too different than every other cloud provider’s.

ehershey··on Who does that server really serve? (2010)
> Dead trees and Emacs org-mode are both resilient against data loss.

How so? Emacs isn’t magic. It’s software. It has bugs. Countless things can cause data loss with paper—-rain, sweat, literally losing it, bad handwriting, wear and tear.
