eicnix··on Ask HN: Any working Chrome extensions that delay loading of YouTube?
I recommend 'Untrap for YouTube'[1] - it lets you selectively block YouTube UI elements. I use the free to redirect the homepage to my subscriptions feed and block all recommendation algorithms. Now I only see content from channels I've explicitly chosen to follow, with no algorithmic suggestions tempting me to spend more time on YouTube.

The pro version could also provide you the delayed launch that you asked for.

eicnix··on Ask HN: How did you overcome social anxiety?
First getting diagnosed, medicated and therapy. CBT is an amazing tool to help you rewire your thought processes and self image. (Access to therapy might vary based on your location/healthcare system but I cannot recommend it enough)

Therapy is only the first step to give you the capabilities to allowing you to effectively “expose” yourself to more social situations like many others have already commented.

eicnix··on How we secure Monzo's banking platform
All you need is a single disgruntled ex-employee to be bribed by hackers to reveal your complete security design.
eicnix··on Tell HN: MS Teams is censoring screenshots from MS Mail
I wonder wether this is actually intentional or just a bug in how screenshot information is saved.
eicnix··on German pensioner given hefty fine for WW2 tank in house
I added the source for it above
eicnix··on German pensioner given hefty fine for WW2 tank in house
Not surprising seeing how he bought this tank disarmed and was trying to rearm it.

Given the strong gun laws in Germany, I think he's lucky to get away with a fine for illegally acquiring a tank, anti-aircraft cannon, mortar, torpedo as well as an assortment of guns.

There is the "Kriegswagfenkontrollgesetz" (law to control weapons of war) that deals with owning and trading these kind of things.

eicnix··on Goodbye MongoDB, Hello PostgreSQL (2015)
Financial data

In basically every case you are querying all data for a symbol in a given timeframe and then process it further outside of the database.

eicnix··on Ask HN: What do you think of my strategy to change my field of work?
I would look for a position as a lateral hire in MBB tech consulting e.g. McKinsey Digital or BCG Platinion.

Speaking from personal experience you'll learn a lot about communication and presentations.

eicnix··on German court forces mail provider Tutanota to insert a backdoor
It only affects new incoming mails as they cannot decrypt the old ones.

My understanding of the German wiretapping law is also that they can only record messages from the point of the wiretapping court order so no older messages can be accessed by it.

eicnix··on Password expiration is dead, long live passwords
If they implemented it properly they could have checked the current password against the revised guidelines on the next login. No need to store it in plain text
eicnix··on How I Run a Company with ADHD
I feel the same way. I've never been diagnosed with ADHD but can relate to all the descriptions of it here.

In the past I jokingly said I need the stress and I think it holds true. In high pressure/thight deadline situations I can work with a high focus for hours but struggle working on projects which are going smooth.

eicnix··on Audible and audiobooks, the fastest growing part of publishing
Part of these issues are due to the in-app apple tax. Audiobooks and ebooks would be 15% more expensive.

Searching and buying audiobooks and ebooks works fine on Android where Audible is allowed to provide their own in-app payment system.

eicnix··on Post-surgical deaths in Scotland drop by a third, attributed to a checklist
Could like point out the studies you mentioned?

The studies concerning long-term impact of surgical checklists I found all claim an improvement.

> Sustained use of the checklist was observed with continued improvements in process measures and reductions in 30-day surgical complications almost 2 years after a structured implementation effort that demonstrated marked, short-term reductions in harm. The sustained effect occurred despite the absence of continued oversight by the research team, indicating the important role that local leadership and local champions play in the success of quality improvement initiatives, especially in resource-limited settings.

eicnix··on Cloud Run beta pricing
When you compare Cloud Run vCPU pricing with preemtible VMs it becomes nearly 13x the price.

Most use cases could trade startup delay for reduced costs by running GKE with preemtible nodes and Cloud Run on top of it. Otherwise "normal" Cloud Run and Cloud Run on GKE could be combined into a system where on the first request an instance on serverless Cloud Run is started and simultaneously an GKE Cloud Run instance of the same container is ramped up to take over.

eicnix··on Spotify to Apple: Time to Play Fair
Netflix already removed iTunes payment[0] to avoid the 30% Apple tax ($256 million in 2018)

eicnix··on Privilege escalation through Kubernetes dashboard
GKE provides it's own dashboard integrated into the GCP console so there is no need for the standard Kubernetes dashboard.
eicnix··on Show HN: Arcentry – Create Interactive Cloud Diagrams
Most model based UML tools provide this feature. You can create diagrams that show the different component in detail as a white box. In another diagram where you show the interaction between the components, you can reuse your white box diagrams as a single blackbox component object. Clicking on the blackbox element takes you to the white box view of the element.
eicnix··on Before sale to IBM for billions, Red Hat started in cofounder's closet
To put things into perspective $150k 1889 would now be worth about $4.1mil [0]

eicnix··on AWS cuts in half the price of most of its Lightsail virtual private servers
You can but you have to deal with the latency between your host and the RDS instance hosted by AWS.
eicnix··on GKE On-Prem Alpha
It will get even more interesting if you get decent federation support between your local GKE clusters and GCP GKE cluster allowing you to scale out to the cloud if you run out of capacity in your local cluster.
eicnix··on Why you should not use Google Cloud
Individual projects without a GCP organization association are probably treated as consumer accounts.
eicnix··on How Microsoft stole my code and then spit on it
I also seems like the projects have different architectures. The author claimed they were copying his code and modifying it for their "weird event system they added". It is not clear to what degree they changed any of his code or if they only used his project is an inspiration.
eicnix··on Oracle plans to dump risky Java serialization
You write a query that is wrapped inside a serializable object. The object with your code inside is serialized using Java object serialization and distributed to every node. Each node is now able to execute your query based on Java code.

https://ignite.apache.org/features/computegrid.html

eicnix··on Oracle plans to dump risky Java serialization
While using a general data transport format instead of Java object serialization is great for most applications it cannot replace all usecases.

JVM based distributed grid computing services use Java object serialization to distribute queries throughout the grid. This allows users to write their queries as arbitrary Java code which will be executed on every node without having to deploy the code on every node.

eicnix··on A New Look Inside Theranos’ Dysfunctional Corporate Culture
The book describes how the board vouched for the initial integrity of Theranos and Holmes. Because of the high calibers of the board members they were taken as character witnesses.

The boarded included:

* William Perry (former Secretary of Defense)

* Henry Kissinger (former Secretary of State)

* Sam Nunn (former U.S. Senator)

eicnix··on As Kubernetes grows, a startup ecosystem develops in its wake
You might want take a look that service brokers which provide a way to manage Cloud Provider resources like Google Cloud SQL as CRDs from k8s/GKE.
eicnix··on Google changes its messaging strategy again: Goodbye to Allo, double down on RCS
You can migrate your Whatsapp account between different phone numbers. I've done this with SIMs from different countries.
eicnix··on Nginx HTTP/2 server push support

eicnix··on Many packages suddenly disappeared
Isn't this a case for a microservices, etc.?

Independent teams providing business capabilities through APIs would mostly eliminate the need to keep consistent technologies as long as the interface design follows shared guidelines.

eicnix··on Docker for Mac with Kubernetes
minikube is still my default for running a local kubernetes instance since it supports more customisation of the k8s settings.
