Is there a changelog or something that says this?

I just checked mine and the header I see is:

  Claude-User (claude-code/2.1.318 (cli); +https://support.anthropic.com/)
What situation are you seeing this in?
eightysixfour··on GPT-6 Astra covertly underperforms on safety research
I think "brick" here means different things to different people. Like I said elsewhere, it is more like an airbag going off. Yeah, you have to replace some "consumables" to go back to work, but the car isn't totaled (just because the airbag went off, the collision that caused it on the other hand).

If it truly bricked itself, I think it would be more like a crumple zone completely buckling, which isn't an automatic total (people will rebuild anything...) but is pretty close.

Using the StopSaw as an example here isn’t doing you many favors, even though I agree with the underlying premise. The StopSaw is closer to seat belts and airbags than beeping for going over the speed limit.
eightysixfour··on Jailbreaking my car's navigation system just so I can change the time
> Carplay is nice but I would have settled for a non-luxury "clock set" button.

The clock set button is obviously the right solution, but this is actually why I demand CarPlay on any infotainment system in a car. I don't trust the manufacturers will keep it up to date, but I know my phone software will be updated/updateable/replaceable.

Did you even read what he said he liked about it?

> My primary goal in doing this was to support decentralized social media, and to continue to engage with X but in a way that distributes network effect rather than locking it in. But in my months of using Firefly, I found that it also has a different effect: I feel much better using it.

> I suspect the primary reason is that while Firefly allows you to tweet, and see other people's tweets, it is missing one central part of the X interface: The Algorithm™.

What he likes isn't being able to spam multiple networks, he likes the change in the content presented to him.

eightysixfour··on A $300B 'Debt Wall' Is Looming over Private-Equity Backed Companies
Oracle isn’t part of the MAG7 and isn’t nearly as low risk as the others. Alphabet had nearly $450b in trailing twelve-month revenue. Oracle was like $70b.

If AI didn’t pay off, Alphabet could service the debt without issue. Oracle would be sold for parts.

eightysixfour··on Investor-owned utilities charge 23% more for electricity than public providers
> This whole "but government is inefficient" argument has never convinced me.

I hate this argument for a different reason. There are entire classes of problems where monetary efficiency is not the primary metrics we should optimize for, areas where things like resilience, stability, and fairness all need to come before the purely economic considerations.

Can you turn some of that into a dollar measurement? Sometimes, but not as easily as a P&L, and the P&L wins.

eightysixfour··on Sharing AI progress in mathematics
I’m targeting maximum debt by about 2030. I’d rather have all the stuff I want while we try and build a new version of a functioning economy than have a ton of cash saved up.

Meh, judge the ideas, not just who they came from. He has cited some articles if you’d like to read them and evaluate the info yourself.
eightysixfour··on ASML says it sold 'absolutely nothing' in Europe in 2026
Krugman recently wrote about this and argued this perception is heavily biased by poor comparative measurements: https://paulkrugman.substack.com/p/europe-v-america-whos-rea...

Wouldn’t that comparison be quite a bit closer vs the 17 Pro? I thought that was a decent camera upgrade year but I can’t keep track.

I would argue it was moving towards a more Apple-like distribution model that has hurt them so much.
eightysixfour··on Will there be a 7G?
The 5G standard is a bit of a mess. In the US we heavily rolled out 5G NSA, which means you still have a 4G network core with both 4G and 5G radios at the edge. You get a chunk of the performance benefits without having to replace the network core first.

This usually has similar (in practice) performance characteristics to LTE Advanced.

5G SA is an actual, end to end 5G network. The two biggest wins here for an end user are reduced latency (a big focus in 5G) and reduced power usage (the phone doesn’t need a simultaneous 4G connection).

Is the speech to text happening on the watch and then the transcription is getting summarized on the phone? If so, the argument may not be as clear cut IMO.

eightysixfour··on How Climate Resilient Are the Largest Cities?
> USHCN

This was the network that had heat island issues because it was volunteer stations highly biased towards urban areas.

It was superseded by USCRN (which you linked to) in 2005. USCRN is 114 stations intentionally situated away away from development. USCRN shows MORE warming than global networks, around .3* C per decade, and it recorded 2024 as the warmest year on record.

The article you are indirectly citing (https://dailysceptic.org/2023/04/08/u-s-government-has-an-ac...) is easily disproven if you analyze the numbers: https://www.theclimatebrink.com/p/the-most-accurate-record-o...

eightysixfour··on Qwen 3.8-Flash-Next releasing tomorrow (125B a6B)
Two things:

- check your temp settings vs. Qwen's recommendations, they specify what it should be in the model card for thinking on, and that reduces some "over" think.

- the model appears to be intentionally designed to do a lot more test-time compute, if you anthropomorphize the tokens, it looks like overthinking and anxiety, but it is just spending compute to get to the end result, so it may not actually help it to prompt down the token spend (depending on the problem)

eightysixfour··on What's in a PowerPoint File?
This looks nice. In your looking around, did you encounter iA Presenter (https://ia.net/presenter)? I'm a huge fan of their very opinionated way of building a good presentation.

Probably not the best for the types of decks you shared though.

eightysixfour··on Kagi added a setting for removing paywalled links from search results
We could call it the Corporation for Public Broadcasting and it could directly fund local news stations. It could be a hybrid public/non-profit where the government funds some, members stations fund some, and donations fund the rest.

Member stations could be responsible for more local content and be a part of a network that syndicates content from other stations.

It could cover more than just news though - children's programming, think pieces, deeper dives into government.

Man, that would be great.

Edit: Sorry, didn’t mean this to be as sarcastic towards you OP, more annoyed we defunded it last year.

> To your argument of (paraphrase here) 'it is good enough why innovate'.

That's not my argument, you are putting words in my mouth. My argument is "you better have a good reason to argue the commercial air industry is stagnant because the industry's incremental progress over time has been incredible." Look at this chart: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fuel_economy_in_aircraft

That's crazy!

The issue with your 737 MAX story is the trade-offs they made - oversized engine without massive recertification or requiring airport retrofits - worked. It is an absurdly successful product despite the early engineering failures. It is the best selling Boeing aircraft of all time and the second best selling commercial airline of all time (to the a320).

Innovation for the sake of innovation isn't worth anything, the current commercial airline stack is deeply optimized and delivers low cost, safe travel to hundreds of millions of people globally. What, exactly, would you like to see innovation on? What trade-offs are you willing to make?

I spent a few years in the commercial airline industry. They have a ton of problems, very few of them would be solved with a revolutionary plane design.
