elleferrer··on Ask HN: Share your favorite YouTube channels focused on mastering a skill/craft
I'm not sure how I ended up on this channel, but I've been watching all his videos - if you ever wanted to live on a farm and build a huge pond and fill it with aggressive bass, I would check out BamaBass on YT: https://www.youtube.com/@BamaBass

elleferrer··on The Dutch Village Where Everyone Has Dementia
Here's some photos of the village: http://www.allgenerationscare.com/amazing-village-designed-j... it's in the small town of Weesp, in Holland. It's a really neat, self-contained world with restaurants, cafes, supermarket and more. Doors are kept unlocked and residents have the freedom to go out within the village whenever they please. Though it does look like an expensive facility, I'm sure there are ways to make it more affordable in other areas of the world to accommodate more of our aging population that suffers from dementia.
elleferrer··on Sorry, We Have No Imagery Here: When Google Earth Goes Blind
I had this issue when using Google Earth to revisit my trips to the Philippines - some of the locations were blurred on Google Earth. I found an alternative using http://www.flashearth.com/ that uses NASA Aqua, NASA Terra, Bing Maps, HERE Maps, Earth at Night, ArcGIS, and MapQuest.
elleferrer··on Using Google Earth to Find an ISIS Training Camp
This is what I was thinking, but then I got downvoted to hell. Understandable, there are innocent civilians and children around - most brainwashed by ISIS. But, it looks like these training camps seem to stay close to the river - as seen in the Vice documentary, "The Islamic State" https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jzCAPJDAnQA#t=160
elleferrer··on Using Google Earth to Find an ISIS Training Camp
My apologies everyone - it was a facetious and tasteless remark, and my poor attempt at being funny, while being sarcastic at the same time.

We need more bellingcats' - this was a great find - can we expect a planned airstrike in this location any time soon?

elleferrer··on Al Gore Sues Al Jazeera Over $500M Current TV Deal
I miss Current TV, especially the Vanguard docs. However, Vice makes up for the loss.
elleferrer··on A Reminder To Investors
>it irreversibly changes the previously professional relationship in a very discomforting way.

This is very true.

elleferrer··on Ask HN: What do you do to blow off steam?
It's very therapeutic. Oceans, rivers, streams or even waterfalls always relaxes me. I've lived near oceans all my life and have island hopped many beautiful places. I can't imagine not being near water.
elleferrer··on Ask HN: What do you do to blow off steam?
I go fishing.
elleferrer··on The Reason Pot Is Still Illegal
tl;dr: Pot is illegal because of the money coming in from big Pharma companies to keep it down, since they will lose money once legalization occurs. Community Anti-Drug Coalition of America (CADCA) is hypocritical in it's war against marijuana while choosing to ignore the dangers of opioids and related prescription drugs.

Also, law enforcement is lobbying hard to keep the status quo since property seizures from pot activities are a major source of income to law enforcement since the Reagan administration.

"Legalizing marijuana could, however, hurt the bottom line of drug companies that make money off drugs like Oxycontin and Vicodin."

Thank you for taking the time to take care of this issue, Matt.
elleferrer··on Freelancer.com is destroying my life
I really want OP to get paid for his work. I feel bad for everything he's going through with Freelancer and what they've gone through the past two years and most importantly, the stress in which his wife is going through. Thanks for emailing on behalf of OP, glad to hear Matt was able to respond to you quickly.

Contact Freelancer's CEO. It won't hurt to try, I guess...

elleferrer··on Ask HN: How much domain expertise do you need to start a startup?
You basically learn along the way. Consider 'domaining' just one piece of a generally large pie. Startups have many pieces to tackle to be successful. You can learn about it or just learn generalities of it, but it's always best to focus on the bigger picture (all of the pieces of your startup). At the end of the day, you have to know how to be a good manager. Because the best solution is to 'hire your weakness'.

elleferrer··on RadiumOne CEO escapes felony charges
Ironically, Gurbaksh Chahal appeared on an episode of 'Secret Millionaire' where he gave a heavy check to a single mother of one who used to get beat up by her ex.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zMAKwl1GW-I

117 times in half an hour! That's worse than what Chris Brown did to Rihanna. And he's planning to raise a $100 million IPO for RadiumOne? Pssh, I wouldn't invest a dime in a company, RadiumOne for example, whose CEO beats on women. I'm thinking that there's an unfortunate team over at RadiumOne trying to save his reputation by flooding social media with his inspirational messages.

I've just lost all respect for you, Gurbaksh. I am now going to waste time out of my morning to unfriend you from all of my social networks.

elleferrer··on A simple way Google could have avoided fucking up Google+
I have to agree with you Scott, Google missed a HUGE opportunity with the legion of Google Reader users. I really miss Google Reader. I want it back, Google!

But integrating Google Reader and Google+ would have made an easy peasy way to share content and socially connect with similar Google+ users. If that happened back then, I'm sure Google+ today would have been a successful community.

elleferrer··on Show HN: To-learn list and course reminders

elleferrer··on Poll: How long have you been programming?
My first line of code was at 14 in 1995 with Visual Basic. Thus began my journey, my love and my curiosity for computers, networking, innovation and technology.
elleferrer··on Amazon Dash
I like how it's a separate device - it's too bad it's only available on the west coast though. AmazonFresh reminds me of "Webvan". Webvan failed during the dot com bubble, maybe Amazon is trying to start this kind of business model up again. I think the grocery delivery service is a great idea, especially now with everyone being so connected. Webvan only failed because they expanded rapidy and weren't able to attract customers at their speedy pace, plus back then not everyone was so connected.
