elmer2··on Is Flying Private Less Safe? How the Rules Differ from Commercial Airlines
When a 20 year old can be a co-pilot, yes.
elmer2··on The blue wave is hammering data-center stocks on the prospect of more scrutiny
Democrats are bad for business. Expect higher gas prices and groceries. I've lived in a Democrat controlled state for at least 20 years and nothing has changed.
elmer2··on US voters roundly reject data centers in ballot measures
Regulations just mean Democrats get to pick the winners, which will most likely match donations.
elmer2··on US voters roundly reject data centers in ballot measures
This might be the case, but it's not going to stop the technology from stealing your jobs. Billionaires in countries like China are going to leap frog over the US in terms of technology or the billionaires here will just build there instead.

If you think Flock cameras are bad, you have no idea the kind of surveillance the Chinese government uses on their people.

As I've gotten older, I've stopped trying to help people help themselves. Instead, I just watch and close my door in their face when they beg for help.

elmer2··on US voters roundly reject data centers in ballot measures
It's the same reason politicians won't house illegal immigrants in their home.
elmer2··on Tell HN: First day in quite some time I feel optimistic about the future
Instead, we will have Socialists doing the same thing, with all the wealth concentrated at the top, which is the government.

Gas prices and groceries don't get any cheaper when youR low-iq plan is to jail Republicans and tax the rich.

There's also never any accountability for our money, only plans to take more of it.

I'm wondering how much money you make, and why you feel like you deserve it.

elmer2··on Hackers hit French national blood bank
We need to have a French Revolution for hackers that do this. One clobbering, and they will think twice.
elmer2··on Trump wanted to give No Kings no air. Then, Meta suspended its Instagram
Well, the movement won. We don't have a king.
elmer2··on Panic and Anger Spread as Europe's Great Pension Covenant Unravels
"PARIS—For decades, Europeans have been happy to surrender around half of their pay to the state. In exchange, they could expect to retire in their 60s on a relatively comfortable, state-funded pension."

LOL. I argued with lefties about this decades ago and they told me that this was the best system and that the government would take care of them.

The people rioting in the streets should be rioting against socialism and the ability to take the money that would go into taxes and invest in something that will actually provide them with an income.

Instead, they somehow think that this has anything to do with capitalism.

elmer2··on Why Gives Men Money?
Like all activism, it's not about equality, but power. Once women overtook men in colleges, school, and scholarships, there's been no push to make it equal.

I got out of the rat race and started my own company a few years ago because many companies in tech are only hiring women and pushing men out.

One of my favorite photo from a few years ago was from a tech startup with the caption 'diversity'. It was a tech team of all women.

elmer2··on Ask HN: Deployed vibecoded apps in prod at scale?
Bad. I'm in security and the vibe-coded apps are riddled with security issues.
elmer2··on From blank page to PDF in three steps AI resume builder
I would have a hard time using a service like this. I was able to take a resume in almost any format (even a .pdf where I can't copy the words out of it) and completely rewrite it and output it to another .pdf or .doc file with codex in a few minutes.

I even made a report builder (so I don't have to keep using tokens) Python script where it takes markdown and outputs a professional .pdf/report. This took about 15 minutes and some manual tweaks.

AI will destroy some of these one idea/function based small-sites like this. I think there are many non-tech people that will still get some value out of it, but it's only a matter of time before it's a few clicks away.

elmer2··on Reddit shares plunge as Google's AI search squeezes traffic
Moderators on Reddit are now basically dictators that love to wield their power online, because they most likely have none in their real life.

Some go as far as even seeing other subreddits you post in and if they disagree with it, will insta-ban you.

These silo communities that this creates contributes to the uptick in violence we've been seeing due to mental illness.

elmer2··on Democrats' Secret Effort to Stack Alaska's Ballot
You are seriously ignoring the tactics here?
elmer2··on France is getting download tax for content providers (€0.055/GB)
I would riot too.
elmer2··on StackOverflow now gets fewer than 1000 questions a month
They sold it at a good time. It reminds me of the broadcast.com acquisition.

It made Mark Cuban very wealthy and was worth pennies within a few years.

elmer2··on Code-execution flaw in UEFI firmware threatens most servers on planet Earth
http2shell and php2shell are both really difficult to exploit. Not that they aren't serious (and should be patched), but it's not the doomsday scenario that the news makes it out to be.

I'm wondering if this is the same.

elmer2··on Worms mate in man's eyes, get plucked out right before larvae burst out
This is my nightmare.
elmer2··on Rest of World faces prospect of shutting down
"The six-year-old digital publication has seen the social and web search traffic on which it depends evaporate. "

I learned a long time ago that you can't rely on search engines or ad revenue for a long-term business. One algorithm change, and your business is gone. This happened to me a decade or so ago. Youtubers run into this all the time.

Most online publications are funded by billionaires.

elmer2··on AI wasn't overhyped. Almost everyone underestimated it
"Burnout stems from mismatches in workload, control, reward, community, fairness and values; not from any single task such as paperwork."

Do you think you will ever get this with a government-run healthcare system?

elmer2··on OpenAI and Anthropic cut their LLM prices by up to 80% within a few months. Why?
Until you start getting taxed.
elmer2··on OpenAI and Anthropic cut their LLM prices by up to 80% within a few months. Why?
This is the goal of all government regulations and it's always resulted in higher prices and near monopolies dominating the market.

Yet, so many Democrats support it.

elmer2··on Surprising gender biases in GPT (2024)
"ChatGPT associated girls with artistic and emotional options and boys with scientific and technological ones"

Even LLMs can see the truth. I'm a consultant and work with lots of companies and have seen this pretty consistently.

Most women usually don't want to be in front of a computer all day as a coder or anything that touches technology and would rather manage.

All HR departments are mostly led by women, which is all about socializing, relationships, and emotion. There are exceptions, of course.

My cousn's daughter is in a robotics class at school. All smart girls (good in math and science). None are interested in building the robot, figuring out how it works, or programming it.

Men and women have different interests. Neither are bad, but we should be honest and stop calling this a 'bias'.

elmer2··on Apollo says AI has delivered 'zero financial payoff' outside the tech industry
It's because other industries are buying expensive tokens, and there's no real ROI yet.
elmer2··on Internet Security: We're Doomed
While the PHP vulnerability is big news and needs to be patched, it's not that easy to exploit.

All of the POCs I found have hard coded memory addresses for the heap overflow and won't work for many versions out-of-the-box.

elmer2··on Conservative party wins first election in nearly a century in BC
When you have a party that destroyed jobs with no alternative, this is the result.
elmer2··on A rising tide raises all rents
Revolutions almost never make it better for everyone. Only the elite group at the top.

Too many people are living a comfortable life and don't seem to realize that commumism doesn't mean you will get to smoke weed and play video games all day.

You will be assigned a job and forced to work.

elmer2··on In the world AI, will individual apps become obsolete?
This will only work if tokens are close to free or you can run close to frontier models on your own hardware.

Also, prompting is like using the command line to some degree. Most people need something visual.

elmer2··on AI devours a fifth of companies' IT budgets
This makes sense. It will take awhile before business processes have AI fully integrated.
elmer2··on Canadians are running out of time to oppose Bill C-22
Liberalism is all about government control. Many here seem to think you can have one without the other, and it's just not possible.
