elorm··on Dan Simmons, author of Hyperion, has died
Simmons wrote one of my favourite short stories of all time Vanni Fucci is Alive and Well and living in Hell.

While I'm definitely not willing to put myself through any of his books after 9/11, I haven't stopped recommending Vanni Fucci as an introduction to Dan Simmons.

Rest in peace.

elorm··on Ground control to Major Trial
They run 4000 VMS as a stingy aerospace company so you can definitely assume less than a 100 physical machines.

Without further enterprise negotiations, it's 1800 per host/year. $180k max.

I don't blame Vates for refusing to chase down the company. They'll bring you way more pain as paying clients than the shameless theft they're perpetuating.

elorm··on Elizabeth Holmes's partner raises millions for blood-testing startup
OP here. I edited the title from Partner to Lover to distinguish between business and romantic partners but I just found out "Lover" carries an incendiary connotation in American English as opposed to British English.

Not my intention at all....

elorm··on Elizabeth Holmes's partner raises millions for blood-testing startup
They were engaged, but never officially married.

elorm··on Elizabeth Holmes's partner raises millions for blood-testing startup
She had a recent interview[1] where she claimed she's actively working on her research behind bars and still wants the opportunity to change the world with her invention.

This is not a coincidence at all.

elorm··on First American pope elected and will be known as Pope Leo XIV
Not a catholic but I kept a tab on the process because the Catholic church seemed to lean towards a very conservative candidate and i was interested to see how it pans out. Turns out we have an American Pope and he wasn't even a top contender.
elorm··on Notion Mail is out
I'm really disappointed that Notion acquired and killed a far better product (Skiff) just to release what is essentially an overdressed Gmail client.

There's no decent selling point over other competitors in the industry and Notion just missed the chance to tie customers into a alternative workspace suite.

elorm··on More than 1,500 new fonts – including all-time favorites – come to Adobe Fonts
Footnote: "Unlimited fonts, no extra charges, already licensed."
elorm··on Show HN: LeetGPU, a playground to learn practice and hone your GPU programming.
Might have to change the title to Show HN: LeetGPU, a playground to learn GPU programming.
elorm··on Solid (formerly Wise) files for bankruptcy
To be fair, They had the "Wise" name first and only had to rebrand after TransferWise rebranded.

Still gave a major scare though.

elorm··on Coolify: Open-source and self-hostable Heroku / Netlify / Vercel alternative
It’s very much on-topic. You’re just shilling your own product under the thread of a similar product, nothing to be ashamed off chief. Shill away.
elorm··on Tell HN: Announcing tomhow as a public moderator
Welcome Tom, Thanks for all the hard work you've done in secret and in advance for what you're about to do in open.
elorm··on New funding to build towards AGI
I don't think we'll ever see another startup raise so much funding every time they sneeze or wag a finger. It's getting ludicrous, really. $40B at a $300B valuation?
elorm··on Dagger: A shell for the container age
Did Dagger pivot their product ? I seem to recall the main selling point was an Independent pipeline-as-code service. Looks like they’re trying to rebuild Docker now?
elorm··on I'm the Canadian who was detained by ICE for two weeks
This whole debacle scares me. It’s almost impossible to figure out the official reason she was flagged by the first border officer.

She had a prior denial for a work visa. Then flew into San Diego to apply the second time and got it. Apparently, she should’ve applied via her consulate instead because of the prior denial ?

Can someone explain in non legal terms why this resulted in a visa revocation and detention?

elorm··on Linux laptop maker called me a Zombie
I’ve never heard of Malibal before this and now I’m sorely tempted to do some sort of business with them in order to get the entirety of my state banned too. The vendor obviously has an ego eight sizes larger than their market capacity.

This was such a fun late night read and kudos to the tuber for placing italy at risk as well. It was totally worth it.

elorm··on When your last name is Null, nothing works
Ha I'm surprised no one mentioned one of the most common name maltreatment complaints. The Gaelic patronymic prefix Mc/Mac.

When treating Mc/Mac names, the first letter after the prefix is always capitalised.. e.g McDonald's, McCarthy, McCain, McCoy, McConnell etc but you're more likely to see mcdonalds, mccoy, mcconnell.

Orthographic case preservation reports were like the biggest complaints that no one was interested in fixing during a short stint in the airline industry.

That and hyphenated names.

elorm··on Grok3 Launch [video]
You're doing the exact same thing he is addressing in that statement above. He's not belittling anyone's rage, he's speaking about people who incite others to feel the rage with them. Now let's turn your question around.

Has it occurred to you that the people who feel rage fundamentally misunderstand the situation and are completely undereducated in this area, and are only fuelled by sensationalism and Media manipulation? And then I suggest you go read Dirty Politics by Kathleen Hall Jamieson if you're interested, because that's what people who want to sound more intelligent than the other half of the conversation always do.

How does it help anyone?

elorm··on Obscure islands I find interesting
You’d make a fascinating writer. There's something about the way you constructed these sentences - so enchanting!
elorm··on Ask HN: How do you backup your Android?
Play Integrity Fix.
elorm··on Ask HN: How do you backup your Android?
I use LineageOs and my device is rooted. Weekly backups via seedvault (including files) to a dedicated backup server. I haven't done a restore in ages so I don't have any inkling of what may work or not but I like the simplicity of the routine.
elorm··on Filed: WP Engine Inc. v Automattic Inc. and Matthew Charles Mullenweg [pdf]
I can't tell if this is sarcasm but it made me burst out loud and it's probably the funniest thing I've read all week.

Red herrings? People actually believe lawyers set up a 9D chess game in court and move pieces by making typos to distract from facts ?

Lawyers are humans too. I know a bunch of oldies who still don't use a spell checker or anything. They just eyeball it or have associates do it. If you make typos, you fix them on subsequent revisions. If not, too bad.

elorm··on Ask HN: What are you working on (September 2024)?
They are currently listed as inactive in the YC directory. I guess the status section works for accelerators like YC that provide status updates.
elorm··on Show HN: Selectable – mobile-friendly Postgres client
I've had to quickly access a dB from through the Termius mobile app one time, and it wasn't an experience I'd like to repeat, unless it's a really dire situation.

Fancy seeing a full-blown mobile Postgres editor. I can definitely see a few use cases but I'm curious whether your average Db admin or data engineer will be interested in using a tool like this.

elorm··on Ask HN: Book recommendations for CS fundamentals for a self-taught programmer?
Teach Yourself Computer Science[0] is a great resource, but if you have ADHD or focus issues, the CS Primer[1] (by the same curator) might suit you better. It costs up to $75/month depending on your location, but it’s worth it. I also recommend The Imposter’s Handbook and The Imposter’s Roadmap by Rob Conery.

elorm··on Nix 2.24 is vulnerable to (remote) privilege escalation
Can't tell what happened to the earlier link but I've fixed the it.

Puck was being malicious in releasing the information. There's no favourable way of describing disclosing a vulnerability on social media because the maintainers didn't meet your 7 day deadline.

It's more of "we're forcing their hands since they haven't met our expectations yet" thing.

There's so many ways they could've gotten a timely fix without "doing everyone a favour by not fully disclosing the entire 0 day." approach but like you said .... tough cookies all round.

And to answer your final question, there's a patch available.

https://github.com/NixOS/nixpkgs/pull/340885

elorm··on Nix 2.24 is vulnerable to (remote) privilege escalation
This is a very poor take.

The security team is composed of unpaid volunteers who work on numerous time-sensitive projects simultaneously. You may not be aware, but since a group of maintainers and contributors left earlier this year to form their own fork called "Lix," there have been many vacant positions across several Nix teams.

They actually held a meeting about the security issue earlier in the day before the disclosure and had reached out to the reporter(0).

The sense of entitlement here is pretty much rank because any animosity between the Lix team and Nix teams going forward will only be to the detriment of the Lix team. Everyone's really tight at the moment and no one is paid for this much drama every couple of months.

elorm··on Ask HN: Can I get an invite to Lobste.rs?
me @ elorm dot org I’ll send you one.
elorm··on OpenTF is now OpenTofu
> I shed no tears for them and their rich founder who posts tweets of his solo flights to visit his rich friends.

Couldn’t keep out a personal dig at Mitchell, who happens to be one of the most unproblematic people at Hashicorp and certainly doesn’t care or participate much in governance ? Seems like a lot of personal feelings were packed into this innocuous-posturing statement.

elorm··on A Decade of Rust, and Announcing Ferrocene
You’ve obviously never owned a dirt ingesting shark robot vacuum. There are hundreds of thousands of Americans who’ll pay $75/mo for unlimited repairs and maintenance and never having to worry about if the toddler takes the vacuum cleaner for a tumble down the stairs.
