emarcotte··on Tesla: It's faster to 'recharge' electric car than pump gas
Assuming the batteries are not just discarded when swapped, you'd end up charging them, right? If a stall can change 1 battery every 1.5 minutes, then it needs something like 60 batteries available, total.

Take one out, start it charging on a super charger. 60 minutes later it's ready to be used.

emarcotte··on GNU Make Alternatives
This! I dropped ninja into a project with litterally 5 minutes work (mostly reading the how to install it part). It's very straight forward and /fast/
emarcotte··on Businesses can't use the word "olympic" because of congress
I think it probably has something do with this:

But in its email, the organization emphasized the need to "protect the rights of companies who financially support the U.S. Olympic Team," such as McDonald's and Coca-Cola."

emarcotte··on Malcolm Gladwell asserts that Gates, not Jobs, will be remembered in 50 years
And Bill Gate's contribution to Vista was what, exactly? I think you're missing the point of this article, not to mention stretching on your math.
emarcotte··on Anders Hejlsberg: You Can't Maintain Large Programs in JavaScript.
Or folks to just don't like hidden surprises when trying to do trivially simple things?
emarcotte··on Notch's next game is an MMO
Wasn't Notch's first game an MMO? Didn't he work on Wurm?
emarcotte··on Red Hat becomes the first open source company to amass a billion dollars
Really? Developers are not exactly the cheapest resource on the planet, and while they don't code every piece of software they package... they still package it, they still give it at least some form of testing (e.g. will it install if it's on this image)... it's not expensive in some cases but it's not free either.
emarcotte··on How Video Cards Work
On the other hand, that same path has shown to be quite problematic, right? Lets say you have 10000 verticies, that's 10000 function calls to make. Sure, you could precompile a display list, or use some other work around, but we've finally come to the point where it is not fast enough anymore. Welcome to opengl 4, i'll miss the easy to understand glBegin blocks.
emarcotte··on And Then There Was One: Red Hat
It's not about distributions, it's about companies. Canonical is not a for-profit, publicly traded company so it doesn't really fit this comparison between sun, redhat and novel.
emarcotte··on Real time lightsaber tracking and rendering on the Kinect
It looks like he had a CPU monitor on his panel, which also looked pegged. Could just be he needs to spend sometime optimizing cause the Kinect can certainly record faster than that.
emarcotte··on Ubuntu Server tech lead: The real problem with Java in Linux distros
Some have suggested that maven as a solution. I guess the only part I'm missing is how maven ties into the actual system. From what I've seen it is always pulling from my ~/.m2 repository, or a full repository upstream. Is there a way to have like a "System" repository that yum/apt/etc could install into?
emarcotte··on Streamie: Node.js + Websockets = Real time Twitter client
I saw something sort of similar a few weeks ago from jdub of gnome fame. http://www.hellodenby.com/blog/
emarcotte··on Ask HN: Your project/folder structure for /home/*username*
I'm not sure how important it really is, unless your current layout doesn't work well for you. That is, most things don't really care where you save your documents, code or other files.

Using gnome/fedora quite some time I have the standard Desktop, Documents, Music, etc which sit mostly stagnant due to dropbox.

Some of the interesting others: ~/Dropbox My dropbox folder.

~/prefix where I install various libs and things I'm using. I have my /home on a seperate partition so I can quickly re-install without losing settings. Using ~/prefix saves having to re-build the more obscure dependencies/tools I end up using.

~/projects where I keep checkouts projects I'm working on or using (they get installed from here into ~/prefix). It is also an eclipse workspace folder, for the times when I need eclipse.

~/media a symlink to my other drives (DVD, usb devices, etc) so that when I samba in (rarely) I can easily get to those -- I was too lazy to add shares for them.

emarcotte··on 5 foods it's cheaper to grow
I have windows, but I also live next to some trees which makes direct sunlight limited.

I was hoping there was some secret vegetables/herbs that could deal with low-light. I guess that means things that would be possible to grow in the woods, like underbrush.

emarcotte··on 5 foods it's cheaper to grow
Do many people have advice on things that can grow inside an apartment?

I've heard/seen various lamp-based systems that have timers and things. I was curious if there are any particular plants that would grow in the relative dark of an apartment if I could get myself a barrel with some soil.

emarcotte··on Leaked Screenshot Shows a Cleaner, Simpler IE9
Removing (or rather probably just moving to be in a menu somewhere) things is definitely not the only key to simplicity, but I think it does help in this case.

I think it does look quite a bit simpler to comprehend at least with respect to not slamming too much different stuff in the same sort of grouping.

When I start up IE 8 I get the tab bar which has, in this order: A favorites button with an icon and a label, the set of tabs, some toolbar icons buttons, some of which are menus, some are just actions, some menu labels, and finally another icon menu for help. The new shot looks like they moved most of that into 3 icons on the top right.

Unfortunately they moved the tabs next to the location bar, which means they will now be competing for space, but definitely trimming down and moving where all the menu options are is a plus in my eyes.

They also added the idea of greater emphasis on the back button which is certainly more frequently used, which is nice.

emarcotte··on "the sexy job in the next 10 years will be statisticians"
So, is this: http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/2/21/Carlos_Sl... the face of the sexiest man alive?

emarcotte··on Eclipse 3.6 Helios is here
I will admit it would be nice to have a single list of "release notes" but there are like 30 various projects and some 20+ million lines of code getting released all at once. Keep track of all of that at once, let alone at detail fine enough to be useful would be difficult.

As a result they have been doing a "blogathon" where various community members are posting whats new, etc. On the main page of eclipse.org I clicked on blogathon.

On the page that comes up (http://eclipse.org/helios/blogathon/reviews.php): Eclipse Helios: What’s New in JDT Top 10 Eclipse Helios Features Let’s See What’s New in Eclipse 3.6 Git Support, Top Eclipse Helios Feature #2 New and noteworthy in Helios (Eclipse 3.6) etc, etc etc.

Just have to pick some and read them.

emarcotte··on What, Me Exercise?: The Hacker Exercise Regime
the trick for me is to not call it exercise. everyone is short on time and noone likes to do 'extra work' even if its good for you.

find something you enjoy that is active and do it. hockey, basketball, skiing, biking, boxing, swing dancing... there is no law that says it has to be some boring uninspiring task.

personal method is road bike to and from work + evening rides time/weather permitting. i'm down 70lbs since 6 years ago.

emarcotte··on Fedora 13 (Goddard) has been released
On the other hand... I installed fedora on my laptop (from ~2006). It went flawlessly.

I went to install windows7 on it. Oh, wait. There are no drivers available. Stuck with no touchpad scrolling, the incorrect resolution, no hotkeys... Google around, some users of similar models report that the vista ones work, if you install them in the right order, manually downloading each from the vendor's site one at a time with fancy file names like SODAL-BLAH-nnnn.exe.

Lately it is really easier for me to install Fedora or Ubuntu than Windows. I'm not sure its because Linux got easier, either...

emarcotte··on The Generation Gap in Your Office
I'm in a very small company. I am the youngest employee. I'm not certain of the exact age difference, but I suspect I'm on the order of 25 years younger than the next youngest employee.

This company was founded by people who all worked at another place and started their own show. They are all doing things they would never have dreamed of doing 3 years ago, let alone 10. There is blogging, talk of twitter, talk of facebook... social media is one of the new favorite words of the president.

I don't think the generation gap really drives the technology change. Sure, young people may be able to change faster, but old people can still get it when it makes sense to.

That said, I wish there were some younger people around... it's hard to relate to their discussions about kids, houses, etc...

emarcotte··on Clean up the oil spill with hay
Did you watch the video? They suggested using fishing nets to gather the hay, bringing it to lined dumpsters at beaches and ports and then using it in incinerators with woodchips/etc to get energy from it.

Who knows if it would work out that well, but that's the idea.

emarcotte··on HTC Sues Apple for Patent Infringement
(Conspiracy Theory) Embrace and extinguish? I'm no expert on the numbers but neither seems to be on top of the market. If they can 'work together' they could perhaps change this situation or at least improve it in their favor.

If they're making money licensing patents to competitors, then it doesn't really matter if they have a competing product coming out. They either make money or make money... its just where it comes from that changes.

emarcotte··on Nikola Tesla predicted mobile phones in 1909
Sure, his idea is definitely interesting considering the time, but the article is not. Like I say, he didn't just predict mobile phones, he predicted mobile communication which has been possible much longer than the phone version.
emarcotte··on Nikola Tesla predicted mobile phones in 1909
Not sure why this is novel... mobile comunication has been possible for many years, cell phones didn't invent it. Walkie talkies, etc all existed long before cellular phones. In fact, I would argue walkie talkies are closer to what he was talking about since it didn't involve going to some cell tower. The two devices just communicate together.
emarcotte··on Why I Canceled My Facebook Account
Perhaps I don't understand what they do then? If they sell screen time for advertising and bundle it with my information how is that any different?
emarcotte··on Why I Canceled My Facebook Account
If I'm reading a magazine that has advertisements that is fine. They help cover the costs of production. If I join a club and they sell my information (where I live, who referred me, what actions I perform in the club) to another company that is an entirely different matter.

Tracking via cookies/pixels,etc is getting pretty invasive too. When google does it, it is just as bad. Look at Buzz, have we already forgotten the outrage when it came out?
