Same here; LAX on April 14. Smoothes immigration ever since I've been flying to the us (since June 2001). Positively surprised.
emeidi··on International Travel Guide for Basecamp employees
I've traveled from Zürich to Los Angeles on Good Friday (April 14, 2017) for leisure - my first visit since February 2016 and thus my first trip to Trump's 'murrica.

I was joined with my dad who recently retired and never has left the continent - his first long haul flight and first time to the US.

I feared and prepared for the worst and I even was debating about leaving my iPhone, iPad and MacBook Air at home to avoid any searches.

It turned out to become the smoothest immigration ever: We stood at the curb waiting for the car rental bus within 45 minutes after we stepped out of the plane.

Short lines, smoothly working self-service kiosks, a friendly immigration officer, not one single intimidating or aggressive question.

Way to go!

emeidi··on YouTube-dl: Open-source YouTube downloader
I have a similar setup: A script downloads my Remember The Milk tasks (.rss), parses them for YouTube and Vimeo links and downloads the videos to my Synology NAS and places a dot-file in the same directory to signal the script during the next iteration the video has been downloaded already.
emeidi··on Mozilla to open first-world front in Firefox OS war
"front" ... "war"?! Mozilla is taking a knife to a gunfight with the 800 pound gorillas out there. This is going to be a really long and bloody war ... NOT.

emeidi··on WhatSim, a SIM Card for WhatsApp
Can it get even more retarded?

Will I have to switch between a dozen SIM cards in a few years when I want to send an iMessage, a Facebook message, upload an Instagram photo, conduct a Google Hangout session. Oh hell no.

Just give me a 4G enabled SIM card, a reasonable data limit (ie. 5GB) for an affordable price. I'll figure out by myself what I will use this mobile broad band connection for, thanks.

emeidi··on A Designer's War on Misleading Parking Signs
You're onto something ... Sounds like the AirBnB or Uber for street parking. Disruption is in the making.</sarcasm>

Why should people require a smartphone to figure out whether they can park on a street or not?

My solution: KISS! European countries show that it's totally feasible to make easy-to-understand parking signs, in 2015, without any Silicon Valley tech at all.

emeidi··on SNB Unexpectedly Gives Up Cap on Franc, Lowers Deposit Rate
It does.
emeidi··on SNB Unexpectedly Gives Up Cap on Franc, Lowers Deposit Rate
"Lieber ein Ende mit Schrecken als Schrecken ohne Ende."

There is no way the SNB could have sustained this currency peg in the long term: It's vital for a "kleine offene Volkswirtschaft" like Switzerland to maintain its independent currency. We've been held hostage by the adverse developments of the EUR currency for too long (a terrible construct from the beginning, by the way).

Three years ago, the SNB gave a lifeline to Swiss companies who rely on exports to the EU area. Those companies had enough time to prepare for the Day of Reckoning which came unto us today. I am aware that there might be a bloodbath ahead, but I don't think it's up to the SNB to make sure Swiss jobs in export industries are artificially kept alive. If at all, it's up to the politicians to protect those industries. They could either decide to subsidize those companies or to turn the employees into civil servants. In case the electorate doesn't like such measures thank god there will be elections this fall.

emeidi··on The reversible USB Type-C connector is turning heads at CES
The spelling mistake with "connectors" (plural) confused me. After looking at the linked web page, I now get what you wanted to say:

The 12" MacBook Air is rumored to have ONE SINGLE USB PORT and NO other peripheral port (except a headphone jack). 9to5 claims it will be a USB Type-C port. Take with a grain of salt.

emeidi··on Kill init by touching a bunch of files
As far as I understand, you need to be root (or another privileged user) who has write access to /etc/init. Conclusion: You can bring down a machine with superuser privileges. Breaking.
emeidi··on Stop writing stateful HTML
Sounds like a solution looking for a problem:

"Create an AJAX request to the location (eg.: /about.html). Change the URL in the browser with the history API (this way, the back and forward buttons still work in the browser). Show a loading animation that the content is now being loaded. When the content is loaded, parse it to extract the contents of #main (you can help yourself there by adding markers in your HTML) and replace the content of your current #main section with the one you just loaded. Make sure that you handle all the links in your new #main content so they will act the same and fire off any BrowserScript required for the page that just loaded."

Aside of usability issues (what if the user has JavaScript disabled?), I don't really get how search engine spiders will be able to index the web site.

emeidi··on Ask HN: How Do You Securely Share Passwords in Teams?
"rotates passwords" Which I think is an awesome feature, especially when the rotation can be forced. Also, very desireable, one-time passwords. And a way to enforce password complexity and to prevent the same password being used for two different devices. And a way to audit password strength and rotation, of course :-)
emeidi··on Ask HN: How Do You Securely Share Passwords in Teams?

emeidi··on Ask HN: How Do You Securely Share Passwords in Teams?
As an IT Auditor, I have seen one such tool at a client once and found it to be the best solution for this specific problem (if personal logins and sudo or another custom made script couldn't do the trick).

But I've also come across dozens of unprotected .xlsx and .txt files stored on group shares which give me shivers every time I see it.

Every Swiss bank I have accounts with (Credit Suisse, Postfinance, Raiffeisen) have internet banking protected with two factor authentication. The second factor can either be a chip card with a reader (protected by a PIN, and you then enter a code shown on screen and it returns another number), an SMS token or an iPhone app which reads a picture of the screen (!) and returns another token number (with a SMS token fallback).
