endless1234··on Meta and Microsoft take steps to reduce employee usage of Claude AI
>Is there something in the ToS that says you can't give each of your employees a personal $200/mo subscription

Surprisingly, yes.

endless1234··on Meta and Microsoft take steps to reduce employee usage of Claude AI
It's not like they can't decide to pay API or subscription rates. Subscriptions aren't possible for >150 person companies.
endless1234··on Don't trust large context windows
At least for me, Opus keeps writing stuff to memories, only to consistently forget checking those memories before doing the same mistake again. This ("remember to check memories!") is of course then again written as a memory... Clearly not a very well working system, yep.
endless1234··on Job Postings for Software Engineers Are Rapidly Rising
The world runs on software. AI makes it easier to create more software, but it still requires humans to keep running and decide what to do. Maybe each individual project will need less pure coders, but there might be a lot more projects?
endless1234··on URLs are state containers
Still leaves the problem of not being able to simply send the current URL to someone else and know they'll see the same thing. Of course anchors can solve this, but not automatically
endless1234··on Where can you go in Europe by train in 8h?
I'm sure you know of this, but just sharing the map for others: https://projectmapping.co.uk/Reviews/Resources/Europe%20nigh...

The situation is a lot better today than 10 years ago or so, largely thanks to ÖBB Nightjet. But yep, it's not only state railway companies anymore, as can be seen on the map

endless1234··on Debugging my wife's alarm clock
No. It's just a pre-sale for members. From below: "For a limited time*, paid Nintendo Switch Online members in the United States and Canada can purchase Alarmo online via the My Nintendo Store before it is available to purchase by the general public."
endless1234··on AI's $600B Question
In general, they were not. You're probably thinking of the very niche and unsuccessful Maemo/MeeGo project - eg Nokia N900 - that were indeed Linux-based. But everything else smartphone-ish from Nokia before Lumia (Windows Phone) were Symbian, which predates Linux and has nothing to do with it.
endless1234··on Bookish Diversions: Do Audiobooks Count?
Yep, this is basically what the "you wouldn't call watching somebody play a game playing" argument, which was mentioned in the article, boils down to.
endless1234··on Tracking developer build times to decide if the M3 MacBook is worth upgrading
For lots of workloads it is basically true, though. Not something exclusive to Apple laptops of course, others have also been capable programming workhorses for quite some years. It's just weird to say that no compiling should be done on a laptop - that might've been true 10 years ago.
endless1234··on Tracking developer build times to decide if the M3 MacBook is worth upgrading
Perhaps many people building code do not need multiple 16x PCI-Express cards in their day to day workflow, but like being able to move around with their laptop?
endless1234··on Beeper Mini is back
iPhone is not using RCS yet. It has only been announced, to be launched some time in 2024. See eg https://www.forbes.com/sites/kateoflahertyuk/2023/11/17/appl...
endless1234··on Gnome Receives €1M from German Government
It literally says the average is 95k, there is no choice involved.
endless1234··on Good code is like a love letter to the next developer who will maintain it
I've seen comments that basically amount to "here we set the variable to 5". Comments also come with a maintenance burden, it's easy to forget to update them when the code changes.
endless1234··on ChatGPT broke the EU plan to regulate AI
Yeah, amount of credit cards & the total available credit limit is used as a negative signal when applying for a loan. But I think you'd have to have some completely silly amount for it to _really_ affect the outcome. You can easily show that you've not used the cards, for example. If you have 10 credit cards which you use constantly, it would affect your ability to get a loan. To me this makes sense, but of course, it's what I'm used to.
endless1234··on Vitamin D supplementation associated with a reduced risk of suicide in veterans
But it's also pretty hard to take too much of it - ref eg https://www.health.harvard.edu/staying-healthy/taking-too-mu... - and the supplement doesn't cost much at all
endless1234··on W3.css – A minimal alternative to Bootstrap
Yeah, and last commit to github was in 2018, last update to the hosted CSS file in 2020. Not quite sure why it's posted to HN now?
endless1234··on Telegram is asking German users when to share information with law enforcement
No. Is discord, reddit, hacker news e2ee? No, but they are still products people want to use.
endless1234··on Electric vehicles are way more energy-efficient than internal combustion
Sure, but that doesn't really play into the equation when comparing the pure efficiency of different transportation methods. Of course in practice since it's good to exercise at least 30min daily, you can think of the energy spent during that as free from a efficiency standpoint
endless1234··on Electric vehicles are way more energy-efficient than internal combustion
Humans are quite inefficient - we can convert around 25% of food energy to work. The losses in the power plant generating the electricity for charging the e-bike's battery and the motor's efficiency losses would result in a higher overall efficiency than 25%.
endless1234··on Deutsche Bahn’s Meltdown and High-Speed Rail
>Given that, at peak times, some commuter services run once every ten minutes, and thus are ~always on time per this definition, it's wise to be a bit skeptical of the punctuality reporting.

I think that makes sense. If a commuter train leaves every 10 minutes, but due to some technical problems, the first train of the early morning leaves 20 minutes late which then continues through the day, does that mean every train is late? The users wouldn't know the trains they're using should have actually ran 20 minutes ago, they just know a train is to go every 10 minutes.

endless1234··on Manhattan rents cross $5k threshold for first time
What? $5k a month is absolutely not something you pay for an above average place in east European capitals, nor in old European cities. Check e.g. https://www.expats.cz/praguerealestate/apartments/for-rent for a pretty expensive central european capital - around 20k CZK for studios, or 800 euros/usd. There are only 16 out of 1042 properties at over 120k CZK (~5k eur/usd), and they're huge (around 200m^2 and central).
endless1234··on You can‘t take the Bar exam if your laptop is too modern
My point being that it's quite different if everyone does it on pen & paper. If you're the only one, it's a disadvantage to do an essay exam on paper when your competition does it on laptops, no?
endless1234··on You can‘t take the Bar exam if your laptop is too modern
Were everybody else also doing it on pen & paper, or were you the only one?
endless1234··on Ask HN: Having trouble getting senior applicants, wondering what to do about it
This is maybe overly cynical, but maybe they want people who say (to themselves, if nothing else) they did 10 hours of work in a few hours? Easy to keep people feeling inadequate and working overtime for free.
endless1234··on Brave’s use of direct mailers
Yeah, seems pretty desperate to me. "We couldn't get enough people to install our app, so we started sending them junk mail urging them to do so."
endless1234··on Yep: Google alternative that shares revenue with creators – by Ahrefs
The massive amount of github/stackoverflow content clones sitting at the top of the results for programming related queries seem to disagree with this sentiment. Ok I guess they are "creating content people want to see", but if just copypasting everyting from another source is enough for that...
endless1234··on In Defence of the Single Page Application
Some blog is posted here. The site happens to be a SPA. Most of the comments are about Javascript being bad, not about the content. The blog or site authors don't even know it's being discussed on HN. What does this accomplish?
endless1234··on Noto emoji, a new black and white emoji font with less color
> And it probably didn’t help that WhatsApp had their own emoji on Android.

Whatsapp just used Apple's emoji font on android too, for a long time. Eventually they drew their own, often mirrored, versions in the same style.

endless1234··on The money I saved as a child would buy one picogram of gold today
I don't think people really mean savings accounts when talking about saving money consistently instead of spending it as an adult. Same goes for compound interest. Regardless, even just putting it in a savings account surely is not "burning your money" if the alternative, spending it directly, brings little utility.
