eng_monkey··on Spanish flu helped create Sweden's modern welfare state
> Spain, Italy and Greece clearly have a worse healthcare system, and those are just three examples I can think of quickly. Surely lots of countries in eastern europe has it worse than Sweden.

Spain has one of the best healthcare systems in the world, usually ranked by the WHO within the top 10 while Sweden's was within top 30.

eng_monkey··on PIA: Our Merger with Kape Technologies – Addressing Your Concerns
I lost faith in PIA caring about privacy of its customers when I noticed how they use unique tracking codes in their newsletter emails. I never received a response when I asked about it.
eng_monkey··on Show HN: Croissant, a Lua REPL and Debugger
Lua means moon in Portuguese, not Spanish.
eng_monkey··on How Australian Tech Companies Can Think About Silicon Valley
It is pretty pathetic to go to any coworking space in an Australian major city and realise that people there are just playing the 'startup game'. These people will typically spend a few months playing the game, burning a bit of their severance package until finding another permanent job.
eng_monkey··on How Australian Tech Companies Can Think About Silicon Valley
Too bad the Internet in large parts of those cities belong to the last century.

I wonder why they do not user their own certificates?

They are really excited people.
eng_monkey··on Kotlin is the hero Android needs
> Are you new here? I'm sure that next week it'll go back to the usual threads about Rust or Haskell, or someone will start a retro fad around Algol-68 or something.

I just do not get how the disconnected list of events you provided justify the promotion of Kotlin we have seen this week. But hey, you might even be on the payroll.

eng_monkey··on Kotlin is the hero Android needs
WTF? Some people are spending serious money on a PR campaign to promote Kotlin this week!
eng_monkey··on How Australia Bungled Its $36B High-Speed Internet Rollout
I feel your pain. It is extremely difficult in Australia to get interest in anything related to innovation. I have had surreal experiences when dealing with companies and particularly Government. They will do anything to boycott something that resembles change, particularly if it affects the the way they work, or of course that might expose their incompetency.

Australia is not a place to live unless you work in health or in a trade. Scientists and engineers (engineering is not even understood in Australia, usually being associated to things like infrastructure or maintenance) are screwed.

eng_monkey··on How Australia Bungled Its $36B High-Speed Internet Rollout
E.g. it does not explicitly outline the right to freedom of expression. It is sort of implied within Government, but not necessarily.
eng_monkey··on If Google achieves superintelligence, time zones will be its Achilles heel
Is it really 'superintelligence' if unable to deal with a simple concept such as time zones?
eng_monkey··on How many jobs really require college?
Exactly. It is baffling that to this day so many people believe the purpose of University is to provide some sort of vocational training.
eng_monkey··on How I got my dream job in the tech industry without a CS degree
Big revelation: Computer Science has very little to do with 'coding' Web pages using FrontPage.
eng_monkey··on Nvidia GeForce GTX 1080 Ti
Thanks for the suggestion. It is something I had considered; to replace the motherboard and the CPU with the new AMD Ryzen. But if I remember correctly, it is difficult to find motherboards that include video output (especially through Display Port). So I would have, as you mention, go with Intel, which seems a missed opportunity given the new AMD processors?
eng_monkey··on Nvidia GeForce GTX 1080 Ti
I appreciate the advice.

What would be the AMD equivalent to say a GeForce GTX950? Because this is the NVIDIA model that seems more than enough for my needs.

Thanks.

eng_monkey··on Nvidia GeForce GTX 1080 Ti
I use Mint, where I have always been using the proprietary NVIDIA drivers. I remember Radeon drivers used be pretty bad. But that was a few years ago. Has the situation changed? I am open to suggestions. Thanks.
eng_monkey··on Nvidia GeForce GTX 1080 Ti
Given this new model will push down prices of exiting models, what would be the cheapest currently available NVIDIA that includes a Display Port output and a resolution of 3440x1440? This is just for work (editing documents, programming, etc.), not gaming.
eng_monkey··on The new Nokia phones are here: Nokia 6, 5, 3 & 3310
There does not seem to be much difference between the Nokia 3310 and the Nokia 220 / 215 / 108 that have been around for at least 2 years.
eng_monkey··on Do Developers Need College Degrees?
Do health professionals need college degrees?

It depends, as it is not the same to be a first aid officer to a dentist, a physiotherapist or surgeon. In some cases you need a higher degree than in others.

The same with software development, IT, etc.

It looks like a rough attempt of scam.
eng_monkey··on [dead]
Purely 'coding' should be learned at vocational school (e.g. technician level), not university (e.g. scientist or engineer level).
eng_monkey··on Data Wrangling at Slack
Data Engineering is about developing technology for data management. Data management/analysis is about using this technology to produce results.

So this is not about data engineering, but data management/analysis.

eng_monkey··on Fidel Castro has died

And what is wrong with this? Or should physicians continue using health to become rich as it is the case in so many other countries?

eng_monkey··on Donald Trump is the president-elect of the U.S.
> So the world's most liveable city is Melbourne, Australia

Do you mean the city with crappy weather, unaffordable real estate, collapsed roads, and a job market based on selling overpriced coffees to hipsters?

eng_monkey··on Tech Jobs, Cheaper Housing: The New Silicon Cities
> Melb, Australia, because it's the most livable city in the world

Are you joking? It must be one of the cities in the world with the worst traffic. And of course, real estate is so cheap...
