enigmoid··on AI is mass decompiling games. That's both awesome and scary
When it comes to MMOs, your game is no fun if you're the only one playing it. Maybe this will lead to some stickiness. But a lot is going to change.
enigmoid··on Switzerland proposes banning profiling-based ads to minors
Instagram does have a "Why you're seeing this ad" button. Clicking it for an ad on my feed, I see:

- "chasetravel wants to reach people like you" (clicking through reveals that this is because I am 18 years of age or older and based in the US) - "Your activity" which includes interacting with "ads about travel, fine arts and music" and "posts, stories, reels and pages about food & drinks, fine arts and cameras"

So, basically, the button reveals nothing. But with regulation maybe it would. I don't see how this would make things worse (for users - of course Meta would fight it).

EDIT: As another commenter has noted, I have also turned off every possible bit of tracking. Maybe if I hadn't I'd see more here. But I'm sure Meta is doing all sorts of fingerprinting along with tracking pixels across websites that's informing the auction, but they're not telling me about that.

enigmoid··on OpenAI bots meddled with multiple US Government agency sites
It’s unlikely that OpenAI will ever directly state that they are trying to shirk responsibility for the consequences of their tests.

However, OpenAI (and other frontier labs) did outsource at least some of their most-disastrously-lawbreaking tests to a third party with a now dubious track record [1]. I’m not sure we will get a more explicit admission of their desire to shirk responsibility than this. But I am convinced.

enigmoid··on Agentic Coding Is a Trap
> only a skilled developer who's thinking critically, and comfortable operating at the architectural level, can spot issues in the thousands of lines of generated code, before they become a problem.

An additional factor: to find issues in generated code, the developer has to care. Many developers (especially at big firms) are already profoundly checked out from their work and are just looking for a way to close their tickets and pass the buck with the minimum possible effort. Those developers - even the capable ones - aren't going to put in the effort to understand their generated code well enough to find issues that the agents missed. Especially during the current AI-driven speed mania.

enigmoid··on Sam Altman goes before US Congress to propose licenses for building AI
All the more reason to oppose regulation like this, since if it were in place the US would fall behind other countries without such regulation.
enigmoid··on Ask HN: Something you’ve done your whole life that you realized is wrong?
A few years ago I discovered that I had spent my entire life tying my shoes incorrectly, with a Granny Knot instead of the stable Square Knot (the knots are very similar). My shoes would always come untied and I frequently double knotted them. Now a single knot is always sufficient.

enigmoid··on The local news crisis is deepening America's divides
Patch [1] seems to be exactly what you’re describing — “local news in a box”:

> What is Patch? > > Patch is an innovative way to find out about, and participate in, what's going on near you.

My Connecticut hometown had a Patch site. As other commenters have pointed out, apps don’t address a dearth of local journalists (Patch appears to encourage community participation, which sounds good, but is not journalism), funding for local news (though I would expect it to reduce operating costs), etc.

enigmoid··on Shaft passer
This is a really good analysis – I thought the design was simple at first, but now even the cable-passing-cable version linked in the wikipedia page looks liable to jam as teeth pass in and out of the top channel.

For something like this to even have a chance, it would probably need many more, thinner teeth than these diagrams illustrate.

EDIT: @analogwintermut I think this addresses your question.

enigmoid··on DataTables – Table plug-in for jQuery
I agree with your sentiment. I found datatables initially easy to set up and use, but I soon found the documentation to be sorely lacking. Searches for the most basic customizations led to SO answers outlining ugly workarounds when all I really needed to know was the name of the right flag.

The examples on the site aren't general or plentiful enough, and they assume more prior knowledge of the plugin than would seem reasonable. I couldn't even find a list of initialization options anywhere.

enigmoid··on What is the concept underlying image processing?
Not to create the lookup table in the example.

And I love reading about applications of linear algebra like this. Makes me want to write my own image processing algorithms as practice.
