entropicgravity··on The Cathedral and the Bazaar (1997)
Musk is the Bazaar.
entropicgravity··on Sri Lanka scrambles to restore power after monkey causes islandwide outage
I presume the monkey got fried.
entropicgravity··on Exploring the Cost and Feasibility of Battery-Electric Ships
Studies have been done comparing gasoline vs. ammonia and while there are differences overall the dangers and mitigations are about the same.
entropicgravity··on Exploring the Cost and Feasibility of Battery-Electric Ships
The future of shipping is ammonia. It has, pretty much, all the attributes of fossil fuels but being NH4 it doesn't produce an earth warming byproduct.
entropicgravity··on Why everyone missed solar's exponential growth
log log has been a thing for several decades.
entropicgravity··on First wave of M4 Macs, including smaller Mac mini, coming November 1
Can you put Linux on a mac Mini?
entropicgravity··on NASA's $5B Europa Clipper mission may not be able to handle Jupiter's radiation
You don't know until you try. Going to Jupiter is not like going to the corner store for milk. Let's call it the "Musk Approach".
entropicgravity··on What's the difference between a motor and an engine? (2013)
Yes, but in the marine realm they are consistently called outboard motors and not outboard engines.
entropicgravity··on Maybe it is the year of the Linux desktop: on Elon Musk's support of Linux
I recently had the experience of wiping windows of an Asus laptop I bought and the process was trickier than usual. It turns out that the 'USB Image Writer' that comes with linux and that you use to create a USB drive with the linux of your choice is no longer up to the task. The bios of the laptop would not allow the USB to boot up unless I created the USB with an entirely different software, in my case I used the balenaEtcher software (I believe other software will work too) to create the USB and only then would the USB boot up and allow me to wipe and reconfigure the partitions on the 'hard drive' (which in this case was an SSD).

It took me an extra couple of hours to get this to finally work. At this point I'm not sure if it's only the new Asus bios that are doing this unfriendly thing or if it's an industry trend.

A real pain in the ass in any case.

entropicgravity··on Ozempic will disrupt big tobacco, candy companies, and alcohol brands
And casinos apparently.
entropicgravity··on EU data shows PHEVs emit 350% more CO2 than tested values
The battery can also be charged by regenerative braking, which also allows the brakes to last much longer.
entropicgravity··on LG Smart TVs have security bugs that could let hackers hijack them
I have a LG Smart TV that I use as a dumb TV that's driven by a Asus pn51 "palm of our hand" computer running Linux Mint. Finally a Logitech MX Ergo 'thumb ball bluetooth mouse' allows me to sit on the sofa across the living room and happily browse the internet, watch movies, youtube and almost anything else you can think off. (All the details here are just in case someone else would like to do something similar, this could be a starting point.)
entropicgravity··on Ivy League College Costs Soar to More Than $90k a Year
Yes, that's for the legacy students (now pushing 50%) who can well afford it. The gifted students get a subsidy so they can afford to attend and everyone is happy, almost.
entropicgravity··on A disk so full, it couldn't be restored
My recollection is that gparted wouldn't allow me to adjust any partitions until I loosened up the available space in the system partition. I guess gparted checks all the partitions to make sure everything is as it should be before it allows changes.
entropicgravity··on Ask HN: What is the biggest thing you've changed your mind about?
All households run on the edicts of Communism. "From each according to their ability; to each according to their need". Unfortunately, it doesn't scale.
entropicgravity··on Ask HN: What is the biggest thing you've changed your mind about?
Let's put credit where credit is due. VisiCalc.
entropicgravity··on Deep sea mining could be worse for the climate than land ores
It could be and it could not be. We won't really know until we try.
entropicgravity··on A disk so full, it couldn't be restored
I ran into a similar situation not long ago on the system partition of a linux installation. The partition was too small to begin with and as new updates piled up there was almost no space left to start deleting stuff. It took me about half an hour to find a subdirectory with a tiny bit of stuff that could be deleted. It was like being in a room so plugged up with junk that you couldn't open the (inward swinging) door to let yourself out.

From the tiny beginning I started being able to delete bigger and bigger spaces until finally it was clear and then of course I resized the partition so that wouldn't happen again. The End.

entropicgravity··on Too many labs run like this
Fake it 'til you make it.
entropicgravity··on Hay for cattle consumes nearly half the water drawn from Colorado River, study
That's good news because soon enough all beef will be grown in the lab and the river water can be used for something more useful.
entropicgravity··on List of countries that prohibit camouflage clothing
This list is heavy on the Caribbean, I wonder what makes them so jumpy about camouflage clothing?
entropicgravity··on Radios, how do they work?
Yes it does but it's the lambda symbol that's the impostor. An analogy of how it really works is to think of the transmitter as a water hose that is spraying water into a bucket, which is the receiver.
entropicgravity··on Texas hailstorm damages solar panels at 350-MW farm
I thought those solar panels are designed to survive hail stone storms.
entropicgravity··on Radios, how do they work?
It's because energy created by the transmitter must degrade as one over R squared in the far field. The frequency (or wavelength, have your pick) has nothing to do with the energy transmitted because energy must be conserved. Putting in the frequency term then violates conservation of energy between the antennas. Then, at the receiving antenna the error of conservation of energy is then patched up by assigning a bogus 'gain' at the receiver. The transmitter and receiver are asymmetric but the path loss equation pretends that they are because that's easier for most people to understand and it works out 'end to end'.
entropicgravity··on Radios, how do they work?
For sure they do not work the way the "Path Loss Equation" would have you believe they do. The path loss equation violates conservation of energy ie the frequency or wavelength term depending on how it's structured cannot be in the equation. And the receiving antenna does not have any 'gain' other than physically getting bigger or smaller, though the transmitting antenna can have gain depending on shape and size. That is, the transmitting antenna and the receiving antenna work very differently. Yes, end to end the path loss equation gives the right answer but in between it's scientifically illiterate.
entropicgravity··on The lifetime tooth decay vaccine is now available (in Honduras)
Maybe for you but for me it didn't work at all until I used the 45 degree angle (with electric tooth brush and tooth paste) approach. For me I could tell that things were getting better when I could stop flossing for a week and then floss and there was no bleeding or tenderness. Before the 45 degree technique my gums were tender from flossing almost all the time. I'm not sure that every mouth is different but I'm pretty sure that there is a lot variety. My mouth creates a lot saliva that, in turn, creates a lot plaque.
entropicgravity··on When did dogs become our best friends?
It's tricky for women to raise children in the wild. Especially once kids get to the ages between 2.5 and 8 when they'll want to explore their ever changing environment but mom still has to look for plants and berries and keep an eye any dangers and carnivores that are around. Dogs protect their own little ones in the wild and readily help to keep an eye on the human youngsters in the same way. Further more dogs will sound the alarm when needed. It's one more helping, important hand, that dogs bring to the bargain.
entropicgravity··on The lifetime tooth decay vaccine is now available (in Honduras)
And it's not for the first time. This BBC article shows how best to keep plaque away from your teeth but no dentist or hygienist will mention it to you because, well you know why. People, mostly elderly, are literally dying because this knowledge is not being disseminated widely. Spread the word. (The first article about this technique appeared in BBC circa 1995.) [1]

entropicgravity··on When did dogs become our best friends?
Humans and dogs were two borderline species until dogs were domesticated. But together the two were so complementary, that they never looked back. The dogs had the speed, teeth, smell and baby sitting while humans had the weapons, rock throwing, intelligence and cooking. It was and is a killer combination that rose to the top of the animal world on earth so far.
entropicgravity··on Honda and Nissan might team up against Tesla and other EV rivals
Musk keeps talking about the $25k EV but I have a feeling he's sandbagging it and it will be close to $20k. I say this because Tesla now has all the tech to produce cars in the simplest and cheapest manner with slightly lower quality versions of the bits and pieces that are now going into their premium cars. Ie slightly cheaper versions of the motors, battery packs (smaller but fast charging), interiors, window etc. All in the form of a modern Tercel.
