epochwolf··on Ask HN: Who wants to be hired? (July 2025)
Location: Cincinnati, Ohio

Remote: Yes

Willing to relocate: No

Technologies: Ruby on Rails, JRuby, Postgres, Linux sysadmin, AWS Fargate, iText (PDF Processing), Rules-based processing systems (expert systems), Nginx.

Résumé/CV: https://www.dropbox.com/scl/fi/5j9r1z2uaaq7hz50v1kfl/Resume....

Email: bradmajewski@fastmail.com

I've been working on ruby on rails since 1.2. I have linux servers at home and a business-class network setup. I've created docker containers from scratch and set up AWS Fargate and all the related services to run them and connect them to a public IP address.

There are a lot of people with similar experience, what makes me different is I'm interested in understanding how the entire company works, the industry it is in, and the people who make it happen.

- I was on the board of directors for furry convention for 3 years where I learned a lot about running a business.

- Learned a bit about accounting and Human Resources from relatives. I know how to spell HIPAA correctly. :)

- I've worked with E&S insurance, student loan origination, college resume processing, and European auto parts.

- I've worked directly with C-suite on high-visibility, long-term projects.

- I've learned a bit about B2B sales and customer relations by tagging along to an insurance conference.

epochwolf··on Ask HN: Who is hiring? (October 2023)
I also think it's a great place to work.

The company has been around for a while and stayed committed to the principals they started with.

We’re a small team, all fully-remote, optimizing for sustainability. We get a lot done without people working weekends and burning themselves out. :)

epochwolf··on Boeing fired midlevel executive following embarrassing emails
I find it amusing that someone would be closer to the CEO through six degrees of separation than through the levels of management.
epochwolf··on Issue 914451: Autofill does not respect autocomplete="off"
Isn’t it on the people administering those systems to disable autofill on their side?
epochwolf··on How annoying is too annoying?
Given how often I remote into my iMac over a vpn that has both cellular and WiFi networks to deal with, none of these bothered me.
epochwolf··on Are Mail-Order Meal Kits Doomed?
One of the Kroger stores near me has meal kits next to the salad bar.
epochwolf··on Scientists call for ban on lethal, autonomous robots
Burnside’s Zeroth Law of space combat:

Science fiction fans relate more to human beings than to silicon chips.

epochwolf··on Scientists call for ban on lethal, autonomous robots
I’m pretty sure banning autonomous defensive weapons won’t happen because we already have them deployed. The Phalanx CIWS mounted on US Warships has a fully autonomous mode where it will fire on targets automatically.
epochwolf··on Scientists call for ban on lethal, autonomous robots
If you count ICBMs, we’ve had them at least since the 1960s.

For more targeted strikes with conventional explosives, we started using Tomahawk Cruise Missiles in 1991 during the Gulf War.

epochwolf··on I tried to keep my unborn child secret from Facebook and Google
My iPhone did this to me. I’m sure people get suggested to share memories of their abusive ex all the time. :(
epochwolf··on The Fax Is Not Yet Obsolete
HIPAA requires any email with patient data be encrypted. That kills any attempt to receive email on a smart phone.
epochwolf··on Without Power, Puerto Rico Is Cash Only
Please don’t do that. People make that joke all the time. It’s not funny and we have to pretend to find it amusing or we get written up.
epochwolf··on New research says starting university classes at 11am would improve learning
Good sleep hygiene, work, and having a social life aren't always compatible.
epochwolf··on Surviving the New MacBook Pro
This happens if you have full disk encryption enabled. If the laptop goes into hibernation, the disk is no longer mounted. So you need to enter your password to mount the drive which then drops you into the lock screen to enter your password again.

Ideally, the computer should be able to know you just woke the computer from hibernation and skip the second lock screen but I don't think the systems are integrated enough to do that right now. :)

epochwolf··on AirPods are now available
That's what the Apple Watch is for: https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT204691
epochwolf··on Ruby Web Applications Without Rails
By default, Rails only does lazy loading in development mode.
epochwolf··on Walmart Pay
I never go to Walmart because of this. I most of my shopping at Kroger and if I need something they don't have, I go to Target or Amazon.
epochwolf··on What Can You Put in a Refrigerator?
> Just look on what people are doing and find a way to do some parts of the process faster and better.

This requires buy-in from different parts of the company that are going to have their own opinions about how to do things. They can be surprising resistant to change.

epochwolf··on New species combining wolf, coyote, and dog emerges in eastern North America
> Similarly is there a term for mutually interbreedable but distinct `species'?

It's species or subspecies. Animal classification has always been a little bit fuzzy and has some legacy cruft laying around. Like wolves, coyotes, and dogs are distinct animals with different behaviors but are definitely capable of interbreeding.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Species

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Subspecies

For domestic animals, we have the noun breed, as in breed of dog.

epochwolf··on The spreadsheet as a minimum viable CMS
Let me point out that Excel has had data validation in spreadsheets for years. It is trivial to enforce basic data validation without writing any code.
epochwolf··on E-Book Sales Slip, and Print Is Far from Dead
The Kindle Voyage brought the buttons back.
epochwolf··on You Will See the Doctor’s Fallibility Now
> A simple dot tattooed somewhere inconspicuous on the hand (make it look like a liver spot) would be enough to solve the problem.

I have the same issue as the doctor and this wouldn't help me. I know which hand I write with. (My right). I always know which hand is my right but I still can't tell right or left for directions. It gets flipped during processing like dyslexia.

epochwolf··on High School Student Proves “No Irish Need Apply” Signs Existed
There are people denying the holocaust. An event for which plenty of historical evidence exists. People will believe what they want to believe.
epochwolf··on Hackers Remotely Attack a Jeep on the Highway
There's plenty of safe ways to accomplish this kind of demonstration. The fact they choose to do so in a way that endangered the public is in fact criminal.

Being a security researcher or journalist doesn't give you a license to put the public in physical danger.

epochwolf··on Why Today’s Automobile Industry Looks a Lot Like IBM in 1985
> I am in a little traffic so I'm running late, but should be there at 5:20

I would phrase this as "Running late due to traffic, ETA 5:20" and this usually works. Siri seems to trip up on articles especially if you don't speak precisely. (And yes, this is extremely annoying)

epochwolf··on Did I ever mention that I fucking hate the fucking web
This is going to sound a bit horrible...

Fixing the space issue will help more people than it hurts. People that have spaces at the beginning or end of their password can simply reset their password or call customer support. Users forget or mistype passwords all the time.

epochwolf··on Microsoft Is Said to Evaluate Possible Bid for Salesforce.com
Salesforce is extremely complicated and requires an expert to configure it properly. Even then, it may not be able to do everything they say it can do in a performant manner.
epochwolf··on Android’s 10 Millisecond Problem explained
By controlling the hardware, they need fewer drivers and they can skip one of the abstraction layers.
epochwolf··on Voyage to Nowhere: The Amazon Kindle Story
I'm willing to give the author a pass on the white-light issue since it is a legitimate problem for some people. But I don't expect amazon to ever address that problem.

There's always a group of people that can't use a given product because they have one issue or another. For example, the Kindle Voyage isn't accessible for a blind person.
