epolanski··on Google Search is now less than half of Alphabet’s revenue
No they are not, why would you think that, they are bundling Gemini in their suite and millions of professionals use it as it's already part of their Gmail, docs, etc.

Literally all my non tech friends are writing Gemini gems or using notebooklm, with a minority on copilot.

epolanski··on Google Search is now less than half of Alphabet’s revenue
Bing introduced it first!
epolanski··on Google Search is now less than half of Alphabet’s revenue
Yes, by definition, they literally posted a loss this quarter.
epolanski··on Google Search is now less than half of Alphabet’s revenue
That was already forecasted, but not that they were going so cash flow negative.
epolanski··on Why are good developers so wary of agentic development?
Because many have built a career and identity on the ability to write code. And confused it with engineering. So it's a hard to swallow pill.
epolanski··on Hunger beats tenure: Advice for junior engineers
I'm Italian too, you don't need any reason to fire, in fact you're not firing rather than not confirming during the waiver period.
epolanski··on Gemini 4 Carbon
Very complex naming is a feature in the entire monitor industry.
epolanski··on Microsoft and Epic Games Suddenly Agree That AI Is Theft
Remember when Microsoft was saying, in 2021-2022, that they were going to provide legal assistance to anybody contesting the license of Copilot-generated code?
epolanski··on Hunger beats tenure: Advice for junior engineers
I'm European, you can put in the contract a waiver period, it's generally between one and six months, depends on the role, but worker and company are protected from firing/leaving if they are not happy.
epolanski··on Hunger beats tenure: Advice for junior engineers
Technical interviews have always been silly and our is one of the very few industries where they were common practice, with take home assignments and multiple rounds.

Just hire fast and fire fast if it doesn't work. Less expensive and better success ratio than this silliness where you get the MIT-bred Leetcode ninja that ends up having negative value between his lack of productivity and terrible code.

epolanski··on AI promised less work. I've never worked more
> Unions still work?

Go ask major US port operators whose employees make astronomic figure and if you don't bend they block the country.

epolanski··on AI promised less work. I've never worked more
Unions worked in the pre-globalized world.

Once companies can just outsource anything from manufacturing to services the only categories that can really unionize with success are those that can de facto block everything at once (port workers are an example).

epolanski··on Software may be getting worse, but it used to be horrible
Since Windows 7, which was I think almost 20 years ago, I've seen a single BSOD.

I've seen more on MacOs/OSX in the same time frame.

epolanski··on Anthropic S-1
The average human spends 100$ per month in food.
epolanski··on Lula wins election after final votes tallied
I think you're missing the point, while not a serious offense it is still an offense and tampering of the electoral process.
epolanski··on Where the Romans Fought (interactive map)
I find it always interesting that the Romans never reached modern Czechia or slovakia, even though they invaded Britain or went so far in the middle east.
epolanski··on AI use leads UC Berkeley math professor to see 'no point' in grading homework
Grading is a rather recent endeavor that spread after 1940s, unsurprisingly in the US.

The first experiments are from early 1800s, also in US.

For most of history universities were places you went to study and learn, not get a piece of paper to get better job prospects in the rat race.

epolanski··on OpenAI and Anthropic cut their LLM prices by up to 80% within a few months. Why?
I'm not aware of Chinese law, but I suspect that lying to the public or investors carries risks.
epolanski··on Lula wins election after final votes tallied
Why unfortunate?
epolanski··on AI use leads UC Berkeley math professor to see 'no point' in grading homework
I never liked grade based education.

Never promoted genuine learning but the ability to get grades.

epolanski··on Kimi K3.1 Pro and K3.1 Pro Highspeed
It's saying that you'll do more work for the same $, but that's not anybody's experience with Kimi really.
epolanski··on Kimi K3.1 Pro and K3.1 Pro Highspeed
So the biggest threats and incidents came from the labs themselves.

Yet we keep completely unpunished offences that warrant arrests if committed by humans, and let them dictate who has access to what.

epolanski··on Kimi K3.1 Pro and K3.1 Pro Highspeed
How many runs you make for each model?

Do you report an average score or the highest.

epolanski··on Kimi K3.1 Pro and K3.1 Pro Highspeed
DS 4.1 is basically endless, even if you paid for APIs you will hardly touch some prices.

But it's slow.

I don't think I can any longer appreciate any major difference in "intelligence" between models for most tasks but Opus is consistently much faster than competitors at finishing tasks and keeping me in the loop.

Of course excluding ultra code, the you will wait 50 minutes for a minor refactor.

epolanski··on Kimi K3.1 Pro and K3.1 Pro Highspeed
I had the same experience with OpenAI's 20$ one, literally one prompt to do some code analysis, it didn't even complete it.

And that was 6.1 sol xhigh, not astra max..

epolanski··on OpenShell – A safe, private runtime for fleets of autonomous AI agents
> Stripping headers, not allowing other than GET requests

GET foobar.com/thisissomeextracteddata

You can also imagine it being much subtle, encoded/encrypted, sent in small pieces to avoid detection, etc.

epolanski··on OpenShell – A safe, private runtime for fleets of autonomous AI agents
You can't use closed models to do any meaningful work in the space.
epolanski··on OpenShell – A safe, private runtime for fleets of autonomous AI agents
If you can make any request to the outside world you can exfiltrate data, period. You can even include data in the uri or headers and they will appear in logs.

That obviously includes talking with the provider.

If you want it secure, it has to be off the internet and on your own hardware.

epolanski··on Code is clay now
It's incredible how far can you go just by forking existing open source projects and asking for changes to an LLM and get the features or changes you need.
epolanski··on The 1.5°C goal of the Paris Agreement is no longer viable
You can hate it how much you want, facts are facts.

We consume way too much and fuel the demand for products of the companies you list.
