ernesth··on Show HN: Adblock-rust Manager – Firefox extension to enable the Brave ad blocker
I've been using ETP plus adblock-rs in Waterfox for 2 weeks. I don't see much a difference compared to ETP + ublock origin apart from some cosmetic filtering. The fact that it's not an extension supposedly allows to block at more layers so it's theoretically better than an extension (https://github.com/BrowserWorks/waterfox/issues/4182)

Note that there are (were?) also some small bugs in the waterfox integration (such as the configuration options sometimes disappearing).

ernesth··on French e, è, é, ê, ë – what's the difference?
> Ë with diaeresis is the easiest case to deal with

Wait, no! This is the most complicated one, fortunately it's scarcely appears.

In canoë, the ë is pronounced as an é. In Noël, it's pronounced as an è. In ambiguë, it's not pronounced at all!

ernesth··on Hyperlinks in terminal emulators
You never opened a README.md that contained links in something else than a browser?
ernesth··on Magic Wormhole: Get things from one computer to another, safely
There exists winden.app which is a magic wormhole webapp. They use their own mailbox and relay so you need to use the right options in the wormhole CLI.
ernesth··on The Golden Age of Japanese Pencils (2022)
Quo Vadis is french and in fact now belongs to the Clairefontaine group, just like Rhodia.
ernesth··on Microsoft unveils Majorana 1 quantum processor
> last time I checked the record was 80 qubits

It has progressed since: IBM Condor (demonstrated in december 2023) has 1121 qubits.

ernesth··on Tumblr to move its half a billion blogs to WordPress
Is this move the reason for the random 403 errors I get from the tumblr rss feeds I follow? Since a few weeks ago, some feeds are disappearing then reappearing, sometimes they are unavailable for a few days, sometimes it's back the moment I refresh. If the move is in the future, I guess that means they have neglected the current platform.
ernesth··on Show HN: Matrix Multiplication with Half the Multiplications
You do not need a different algorithm for each real. Just take the algorithm that proves the statement for rational p. It proves the statement for all reals bigger than p. (hence having as many algorithms as there are rational (countably many) is enough)
ernesth··on The leap year is February 29, not December 32 due to a Roman calendar quirk
Well you cannot really do without leap years, but what you propose looks a lot like the pataphysical calendar: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/%27Pataphysics#Pataphysical_ca...

13 months of 29 days. The 29th of each month being imaginary with two exceptions, 1 annual and 1 leap.

Or more seriously, https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/International_Fixed_Calendar

ernesth··on DRM-free e-books are a big deal (2019)
Not parent, but it is forbidden in France: https://www.legifrance.gouv.fr/codes/id/LEGIARTI000028154450...
ernesth··on B612 Font Family
There are in fact 3 universities in Toulouse: Toulouse I-Capitole, Toulouse Jean Jaurès (used to be Toulouse II-Le Mirail), and Toulouse III-Paul Sabatier. And since it would be absurd to have just those three universities they are part of a group called "Université de Toulouse" (formerly Université fédérale de Toulouse Midi-Pyrénées) which also counts a number of schools https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Federal_University_of_Toulouse....
ernesth··on Are any words the same in all languages?
In french, it is "vecteur propre" (which has the same meaning).
ernesth··on Why your blog still needs RSS
Also happy with miniflux. On android, I use Fluent Reader to sync: https://hyliu.me/fluent-reader-lite/
ernesth··on Bookwyrm – A federated social network for reading books
It fetches data from the public APIs of openlibrary.org and inventaire.io. From my point of view, inventaire is really great as it synchronizes with wikidata and is far better at not duplicating works or authors.
ernesth··on Mercedes EVs can go faster for $60 a month
IBM has been doing it for years: they sell you a multi-core machine but you only can use 1 core. You can pay to use more than one as you need: https://www.ibm.com/docs/en/power9?topic=environment-capacit...
ernesth··on The Mystery of the Dune Font
> EDIT: The covers of some modern french translations are also incredible. Just the four letters D U N E, which are exactly the same shape but rotated 90 degrees. It's an incredibly simple and effective design.

Indeed, the Robert Laffont 2020 edition looks great: https://www.noosfere.org/livres/EditionsLivre.asp?numitem=13...

ernesth··on Show HN: A VNC viewer for eInk devices capable of 30 FPS when writing text
I thought 11 years ago that e-ink with good refresh was achieved, seeing bookeen's prototype display videos and full screen scrolling.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=24srQXX81Oc https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CxwceUvxlCo

But all e-ink devices I have seen since were slow and would form time to time show remanence.

ernesth··on After Obsidian and Logseq, I give Dendron a try
I tried trillium and found it interesting but a little difficult to use (I prefer markdown to their editor). Then I tried editing on mobile and it really was awful. It was mostly impossible to use the contextual menu. Some words got doubled when I typed them. Pasting did not work.

So I came back to a folder of markdown files synchronized with syncthing that I edit with markor on Android and vim or vscode on desktop.

ernesth··on Cloudflare have made it impossible for me to unsubscribe from marketing emails
> Dark pattern one: You must login to manage your marketing preferences. There's no security related emails here, so this is completely unnecessary.

Did you just give your credentials to a website linked from a spam email?

ernesth··on Huawei MatePad Paper – eInk Tablet
So it is far more expensive than the similar bookeen notéa and kobo elipsa which cost 400€.
ernesth··on Militarized Dolphins Protect Almost a Quarter of the US Nuclear Stockpile
Let me add yet another reference: Robert Merle's "the day of the dolphin" (un animal doué de raison) published in 1967 (so the navy began training dolphins and sea lions while reading this book). In it, the (talking) dolphins are used in a false flag attack.
ernesth··on Google sends anti-regulation propaganda to small businesses using Google Maps
To be fair, Google Maps is also stupid:

I once planned in advance and saved a trip with intermediary steps ending at what it calls "Domicile" (its way of saying Home in french). The next day I open the trip and the destination is no longer my home but a place doing home cleaning close to my start...

ernesth··on Sinclair TV stations disrupted across the US in apparent ransomware attack
> Nestle products are titled under 2000 different brand names. For instance, [...] maybeline makeup brands

Isn't Maybelline a subsidiary of L'oréal rather than Nestlé?

ernesth··on Wikidata
Nice.

It seems like magic, but it is possible to entirely outsource the infobox to wikidata. See for example https://fr.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mart%C3%ADn_Abadi whose infobox is created with the sole `{{Infobox Biographie2}}` line.

ernesth··on Brave Search beta
Google has taught people to ask full questions (without question marks strangely), and knows how to treat those requests (Who is the mayor of Palo Alto; What's the weather in X"...). DDG is a little worse at that.

I expect search engines to search for every words in my request, and I prefer shorter requests. DDG gives pertinent instant answers for "weather Paris", "3.5mi in km" and correct results for NBA schedule.

ernesth··on Belarus 'diverts Ryanair flight to arrest journalist', opposition says
> when landed they arrested a wanted man once he was on their soil.

Did he get on their soil though? Usually, you stay in the international zone when between flights, so, here, the passengers should not have entered Belarus. Do we know what happened in the airport?

ernesth··on Beginner’s guide to mechanical keyboards
> membrane keyboards generally have 2KRO,3KRO, or 6KRO while mechanical keyboards support N-key rollover (no matter how many keys you are holding down simultaneously, all of them will be registered correctly).

2KRO means 2-key rollover. If you push 3 keys simultaneously, one will not be taken into account.

It is in fact a little more complicated than that (2KRO guarantees that any combination of 2 keys will register both, but some 3 or more key combinations will also work).

ernesth··on Who won the Amstel Gold Race? Human error in photo-finishes
I assume the finish line should correspond to the scaffolding above the road that sports "Finish". https://www.tglyn.ch/blog/images/amstel_photofinish_camera_p...

The computation by the author of the article indeed confirms this: https://www.tglyn.ch/blog/images/amstel_approx_line.png

My point is that it is the painted line that was not correctly placed rather than the camera.

ernesth··on DuckDuckGo Extension to Block FLoC, Google’s New Tracking Method in Chrome
Are you removing the infamous microsoft name to make it more frightening?

Microsoft is terrible. Google is bad. Combining them in a browser was an evil achievement.
