esotericsean··on Opus 5.5 is good at explainer videos
I work for a company doing marketing (I make ads). Essentially I've trained my OpenClaw machine to know everything it needs about the company, know what will perform best, and then it writes a script, creates an avatar, generates videos, b-roll, edits them together with captions and CTA end card. And they've performed better than when I was doing it all manually. Pretty crazy.
esotericsean··on Claude is a Contrarian
Opus is the worst at it. Fable 5 still does it a little. Fable 5.1 is much improved, at least.
esotericsean··on Apple caught off guard by AI demand for Mac Mini and Mac Studio
Imagine if Apple truly went the route of local AI and every Mac came with a fully local, open weight Siri. They could put Anthropic and OpenAI out of business.
esotericsean··on Why does Opus 5 feel worse to work with?
Fable 5 was amazing and then I switched to Opus 5 because it was supposed to be similar in ability but half the price and... it was fine but it definitely wrote in a very weird way that annoyed me all the time. Nice to know that others feel the same way!
esotericsean··on Qwen 3.8 27B
Need to upgrade to a second 3090! Slowly building up my local models with Krea2, MiniMax H3 (and their new Music3), and now Qwen 3.8
esotericsean··on Programming a GBA Game on an iPhone
Sounds kinda annoying to work purely on an iPhone, but very cool experiment nonetheless!
esotericsean··on NASA chief suggests SpaceX may be booted from moon mission
Instead of competing with other nations, what if we all worked together as humans?
esotericsean··on iPhone Air
Saw another comment that said this will give Apple the opportunity to learn if people really want a thinner iPhone. I hope they learn that people don't. Curious to find out the answer.
esotericsean··on iPhone Air
I just can't imagine anyone wanting this? Please correct me if I'm wrong, but do people really want a thinner phone? I love my 16 Pro and plan to get the 17 Pro.

Definitely feel like thicker and longer battery is better. Heavier feels nice.

esotericsean··on Someone at YouTube needs glasses
I got this view the other day and was shocked. Went and found a browser plugin to fix it. But I wish our voices could be heard or we could give some feedback.
esotericsean··on Fixing E.T. The Extra-Terrestrial for the Atari 2600 (2013)
As a game dev who's been learning ASM recently this was very fun to read through. Wish there was a compiled ROM I could try, but I guess I have to do it myself!
esotericsean··on TikTok preparing for U.S. shut-off on Sunday
Very interesting. To me TikTok is nothing but memes and useless stuff. Whereas Instagram has been an amazing community for many of my passions. And now Threads is gaining in popularity as well (it really feels like hope scrolling in comparison to X's doom scrolling). I wish it wasn't owned by Meta, but if TikTok actually gets banned I would say good riddance. Something about Instagram/Threads is just perfect to me.
esotericsean··on Take the pedals off the bike
I bought my 20 month old son a balance bike for Christmas and he's already able to balance on it a month later while going down the sidewalk. Great method!
esotericsean··on If we want a shift to walking, we need to prioritize dignity
Living in Southern California, I like to go on walks with my family in the evenings or mornings, but I couldn't imagine having to take public transportation or having to walk everywhere. It seems picturesque, but it also sounds terrible in the sense that you can't just get in your car, go some place, park in a parking lot, go shopping, and then head back home, all on your own terms.

I visited London a long time ago and the public transportation is amazing and it I did want to walk to see the city, which I did. But I imagine even living there, I would want my own car to be in control of my life.

So, visiting a place is good for walking. But living in a place is not. At least that's my experience.

esotericsean··on Never Retire
Totally agree with this. I have a 9-5 that I don't hate, but I would love to just spend time with my family and focus on my hobbies. I would be beyond happy doing that for the rest of my life.
esotericsean··on Animate Anyone: Image-to-video synthesis for character animation
Pretty huge breakthrough. Hopefully we'll be able to access this soon. Between this, SVD, and others, 2024 is going to be the year of AI Video.
esotericsean··on iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Plus
Curious what other devices people have that use USB-C? The only one I have is my Nintendo Switch. So for me, this is mostly an inconvenience having to get new cables for my phone. I'll miss Lightning.
esotericsean··on Can an artificial kidney finally free patients from dialysis?
That is probably how I would feel as a parent as well. Though, just to put it out there, if you're a donor your retained kidney grows and makes up for the one that was removed. Also, you're given priority on the waiting list in the future should you ever need one yourself.
esotericsean··on Can an artificial kidney finally free patients from dialysis?
This probably isn't a viable solution for my father who has been on dialysis for 2 years and is in ESRD. I am a candidate for a kidney transplant for him (I went through the whole process), but he has other issues that have been preventing him from having another surgery. I'm pretty scared to do the procedure, too.

But really glad to see progress being made here. Hopefully, also, the world works toward improving diet and starts eliminating metabolic diseases like Type-2 Diabetes and Heart Disease.

esotericsean··on GB Studio: Drag and drop retro game creator for GameBoy
I've been making a game using GBDK (C) and a little engine called ZGB for the past several years, but the work that Chris and the team have done on GB Studio makes me want to switch to the platform. I'll still finish my game using C because I'm so far into development now there's no point in starting over, but if I was starting fresh, GB Studio would be the way to go.

That said, I'm glad I made my game in C because I've learned so much more about coding. I feel like I get better every day. Not sure I would have that same experience using GB Studio.

One day I want to try using ASM...

esotericsean··on McDonald's just dropped a brand new Game Boy game
I've been using GPTPlayer with my GBDK project. Is there any benefit to me switching to HUGE?
esotericsean··on Tell HN: Cancelling HP Instant Ink prevents cartridges from being used
When I got married, my wife was subscribed to HP Instant Ink. Was one of the first things I cancelled. I couldn't believe that the ink didn't work afterwards. Made me want to reverse engineer it somehow, but wasn't really worth my time.
esotericsean··on Apple Restricts Employee Use of ChatGPT, Joining Other Companies Wary of Leaks
The company I work for uses ChatGPT, StableDiffusion, ElevenLabs, and lots of other AI tools every day now. We make ads and use it to generate scripts, create "stock" photos, fake voice over, etc. We even have started training our own models to match branding guidelines and whatnot.

I also use ChatGPT and SD to help me with my personal hobby of game development. It's good at analyzing code snippets, refactoring, and SD is good for inspiration.

These are really useful tools and it's only the beginning.

esotericsean··on Study links 'stuck' stem cells to hair turning gray
The What I've Learned YouTube channel recently did a video on this! https://youtu.be/Yehk_h_Uj6k
esotericsean··on Riffusion – Stable Diffusion fine-tuned to generate music
Coming at this from a layman's perspective, would it be possible to generate a different sort of spectrogram that's designed for SD to iterate upon even more easily?
esotericsean··on Who knew the first AI battles would be fought by artists?
This will be a losing battle for artists. Anyone can train any data they want. It's the equivalent of a human learning to draw someone else's art style or take photos the same as a famous photographer. There is no stopping it now and it's only going to get better and easier. Video is getting close to being just as accessible as image or text generation. Regardless of how you feel about all this, there's no stopping it. It's the future.
esotericsean··on MilkyTracker
I’ve had to use MilkyTracker on my Mac for creating .mod files for Game Boy development over the past couple of years. I’ve learned workarounds for nearly everything and gotten really good at using it, but I keep telling myself I’m going to fork it and try and make some improvements. Maybe one day if I ever get time.
esotericsean··on Only virgin type of olive oil consumption reduces the risk of mortality: study
It depends on where you live. If you live in California, you should not be purchasing Greek olive oil as it will oxidize by the time it gets to you. 100% Californian olive oil is the way to go for health. Or better yet just use coconut oil and butter/ghee.
esotericsean··on Cooling the Earth with a sunshade near the inner Lagrange point (2006)
I sorta disagree. During Covid, the entire world came together. I think the world can work together as long as they're forced to.
