etchalon··on StackOverflow now gets fewer than 1000 questions a month
SO suffered from its success and, bluntly, the laziness of humans.

I remember when I started the getting the distinct feeling that most of the questions being asked weren't being asked by genuine developers struggling with a concept or problem, but were basically "do my job for me" types, largely overseas developers.

I stopped contributing.

etchalon··on New iMac with M6
I want one and I don't know what I'd do with it

I don't understand why you'd build an operating system that has to work on top of the operating system you have to use to run the browser that runs your operating system so you can use the apps that run on your operating system that run in the browser that's running on an operating system that has versions of the app you're running in the browser that's running your operating system.

`puter` looks like a great project and vastly more interesting than the slop-code knock-offs you're doing with `everything`. I don't know why you pivoted from "genuinely interesting idea with real intent and thought" to slop.

As for the "what I've done" ad hominem, yeah ... I don't spend a lot of time working on open-source anything because I run a services-based agency. My "computer time" hours go to billable work, and I don't have a ton of time to spend on open-source anything. So my personal public GitHub is mostly empty and my agency one (https://github.com/thisismess?q=&type=source&language=&sort=) isn't much better.

Basically, I'm a professional who writes code for money and when not writing code for money, I do other things.

As for TLS, it's a static site with a contact form my cofounder threw together in a weekend because our previous site was like 8 years old. No one noticed or cared we'd forgot to check the box in Cloudflare to enforce TLS. But it's deeply hilarious to lean on that as some type of "rebuttal".

The site gets 10 hits a week.

Nothing I posted was "attacking you personally" beyond asking some fairly basic questions based entirely on the quality of the repo posted here.

Because it's deeply hard to look at this and think "This person has expertise and experience in software design" and not "someone told Claude to make them a product and they’d like some credit for that.”

Monorepo's don't solve dependency hell. They amplify it.
etchalon··on Everything
There are already open-source and free alternatives for every mega app.
etchalon··on Everything
Turns out product design is a lot harder than "Make me a product. Don't make any mistakes."
etchalon··on Everything
Are people not aware that every single one of these already had open source, self-hosted alternatives? Why do we need to add a pile of slop-code knockoffs? Why does it need to be one giant repo? Does this person have any experience building and releasing software that wasn't built and released for them by a robot?
etchalon··on Microsoft offers mass buyouts for roughly a quarter of its workforce
Jesus. 25% is ... a lot.
etchalon··on Steam Users Beg for "No AI" Filter as Vibecoders Flood Next Fest
Monkey paw curls.
etchalon··on Advanced coding in low-resource programming languages
New languages do in fact come out, and old languages get better, and old codebases are thing some people have to maintain.
etchalon··on Advanced coding in low-resource programming languages
It is such a ridiculously cool thing that we're reaching an era where the programming language you chose is as temporary a choice as the name of a variable.
etchalon··on 8 in 10 Americans oppose live-streaming execution
Except the execution wasn't being presented as a somber recognition of the brutalism of the death penalty, but a celebration of vengeance.
etchalon··on Ledger confirms spy chip implant behind wallet crypto thefts
Bitcoin has lost 25% of it's value in the last year.
etchalon··on New Apple TV 4K
I don't think Apple could do better than a high-end Sony.
etchalon··on New Apple TV 4K
Why make just one TV when you can make a box that plugs into any TV?
etchalon··on New Apple TV 4K
It works with any bluetooth headphones, directly.
etchalon··on Triple-A Minesweeper
I laughed way way way too hard
etchalon··on What ArtCraft's Vibe-Coded Apps Say About Adobe
I think Adobe is in sort of a rock-hard-place situation, where they can't change their current apps too much because users are so invested in them, they can't build new apps without pulling resources away from their main apps and creating confusion, and they were denied the ability to just acquire their primary competitor.

Their best strategy, so far, has been to create new "mobile" versions of their apps where they can iterate faster.

etchalon··on What ArtCraft's Vibe-Coded Apps Say About Adobe
"Nothing. They're bad apps, coded by an amateur, offering no new ideas and only the most obvious subset of functionality."
etchalon··on Serverless Horrors $10,811.41
I'm glad the author just paid it, and learned the lesson.

But yes, these platforms should default to hard caps that you have to explicitly disable.

etchalon··on Trump administration is suspending Microsoft from a green card program
It's frustrating that my first thought, with this administration, even when they do something objectively defensible, even good, is "OK, so what bribe did Microsoft refuse to pay?"
etchalon··on Account bans on Reddit
"I tried to figure out how to advertise for free on Reddit and nothing worked."
etchalon··on Account bans on Reddit
I mean, ads exist, you know?
etchalon··on Florida woman arrested for allegedly making threats in an AI chat
I think, at some point, after the third incident of the models escaping containment, it becomes reasonable to say that, if nothing else, they were incredibly negligent.
etchalon··on Florida woman arrested for allegedly making threats in an AI chat
I don't, because I'm not a prosecutor with access to discovery, subpoenas, etc.
etchalon··on Photopea creator weighs in on Photosuite project
Mediocre people using tools that let them feel not so mediocre.
etchalon··on Florida woman arrested for allegedly making threats in an AI chat
I think a competent DA could easily prove that, if you know the model is capable of performing unauthorized breaches into third-party systems when given a task, and you give it a task that could require it to do so, intent is present.
etchalon··on Dots: Always-on agents
At some point a designer is going to come up with a visualization for an agent that isn't "amorphous character blob".
etchalon··on FTC chair suggests AI developers should be liable for conduct of agents
Yes. Duh.
