evanjrowley··on 512GB Mac Studio
Good to know. Private GLM-5.3 is really the one use-case I can imagine for a system like this - It does very well with cybersecurity tasks, which are either blocked for most people by current providers, or on their way to getting blocked based on the regulatory/political trends. Such a capability could become very valuable when supply becomes artificially limited, although I expect the Chinese labs will be the last hold-outs. Imagine not being able to do security hardening on your own tech because government-imposed guardrails decide your legitimate prompts appear "risky". In such a world, what would an unconstrained cyber-capable model be worth?
evanjrowley··on 512GB Mac Studio
All roughly the same price, for a consumer who has won the lottery: - 1x 512 GB Mac Studio with the 4 TB disk storage option. - 4x Nvidia GB10s (total 512 GB RAM) each connected with a 100 GiB/s link to a Mikrotik CRS504-4XQ-IN. - 3x Ryzen AI Max+ 495 192GB systems (total 576 GB RAM), connected via a 40 GiB/s link directly to each other.

In J.R.R. Tolkien's Lord of the Rings, Gollum ate bones and lived to be over 500 years. Coincidence?
evanjrowley··on Astra can read and write weights to improve Qwen
Seeing that they were working on Qwen3.5-0.8B has given me new hope. I would really like to get Jeff-Code working the way it was advertised, but so far, all of my results with Jeff-Code have shown it to underperform compared to direct Qwen3.8-27B. It's possible there is something wrong with the underlying Jeff v1.3 model, which is based on the same Qwen3.5-0.5B. Perhaps Astra will solve my problem.

evanjrowley··on Radio-in-a-box: Self-hosted internet radio with Icecast, Liquidsoap and Rust CLI
I wish I had something kind of like this: Tune into a local AM/FM radio station, then broadcast over LAN to parts of my house that don't have great radio signal reception. Are there any good options out there for this? Maybe something to combine with Radio-in-a-box?
evanjrowley··on We're releasing the weights of Mistral Large 4
When I last tried Mistral Large 4 for a code documentation task, it ignored my SKILL.md files and it had a few hallucinations. I wondered if I had failed to prompt it properly or if there was some problem with my harness. If it's gotten better since launch, then I'll un-cancel my Mistral.ai subscription.

evanjrowley··on Ask HN: If the models are so good, why doesn't OpenAI just start 100 companies?
The shift you're imagining is kind of like what happened with ASIC-based Bitcoin miners. There was a time when the people who made them realized it would be more profitable to just keep them in-house vs. distribute them for sale. If that happened with OpenAI/Anthropic, it would be mighty unfortunate. A majro reason why it's unlikely to happen (IMO) is the training of these models is aided by external users feeding in new content.

I love that he designed a Jugglemeter.

Tbh, I was drawn to this post's headline because lately I've been having a great time using the Juggler coding agent. I recommend it if you're in search of something powerful with a web interface that works well on mobile devices: https://github.com/juggler-ai/juggler

evanjrowley··on Mitos editor is a fork of Helix
Commenting as an outsider to both projects, one possible motivation to fork Helix might be this PR:

https://github.com/helix-editor/helix/pull/8675

Helix was originally meant to be a "batteries included" editor without any scripting/plugins. That PR intends to change this and so there is a bit of controversy around it. Overall it looks like the PR will eventually be merged.

The Mitos fork could have be made for totally unrelated reasons. This is really just my speculation.

Would you be interested in a self-modifying harness written in Common Lisp? If so, then please check out Autolith: https://github.com/lambda-symbolics/autolith/

In my time using it with GLM 5.2, I've observed it modify itself to disassemble binaries in search of answers - without me needing to ask it to do so. Very powerful stuff. Here's what it looked like:

  ◇ reasoning summary
│ The 200MB binary grep with regex backtracking is too slow. Let me write the strings out first (using grep -a with simple fixed patterns is fine; regex with .{0,80} on binary is slow). Better: use SBCL to do
│ a fast binary search, or use tr to split null-separated strings then grep fixed strings. Let me use a quick approach: grep -ao with fixed patterns only (no regex), which was fast before.
    │
│ To extract context, I can use SBCL to load the file into memory (206MB is fine) and search for occurrences with bounded context. Let me do it in a Lisp worker.

  ◇ reasoning summary
    │ The binary confirms:
│ - modelProvider in settings.json selects the Gemini API backend with GEMINI_API_KEY.
    │ - There's a regex ^(?:gemini-api:|blade:|evergreen:|beyond-api:)(?:.*?/models/(.+)|(?:.*/)?([^/]+))$ — model references with provider prefixes.
│ - "No title command configured in settings.json. Please add a "title" block." — settings keys.
    │
│ Now I need to find the settings struct JSON tags for the model field. Let me search for json:"model" again with wider context, and also for the string "title" block and other settings-related keys like
    │ "theme".
