evtothedev··on Goodbye from Salon
Thanks for sharing this. I recall Salon being a competitor of Slate, and one thrived, and the other completely floundered. I'd wondered why.
evtothedev··on Stripe acquires Clerky
I've used clerky to incorporate a company, and I *loved* it, and I've recommended them to many people.

That said, I wonder if this reflects how much people are using LLMs for generating legal boilerplate, rather than using lawyer-generated boilerplate (i.e. clerky). As in, this is another version of Stack Overflow losing traffic.

evtothedev··on Ask HN: Did Fable disappear from your Claude usage and requires credits now?
Just happened to me. And disappeared from the 'Usage' tab.
evtothedev··on GPT‑Live
For the first actor - why does her accent change the longer she talks. It's like they had an "Estelle Costanza" dial that they started at zero and slowly rolled up to 8 or 9.
evtothedev··on Notes from tired Egyptian whose job is explaining that humans built the pyramids
I love that gmail was only 4 months old when this came out.
evtothedev··on xAI joins SpaceX
It was also foreshadowed in the Benedict Evans newsletter.
evtothedev··on Meditation as Wakeful Relaxation: Unclenching Smooth Muscle
10-20m minutes every morning. Back when Headspace was strictly a meditation app, I went through the entire "pro" sequence, and now I feel good about going it alone. Genuinely, and very positively, life changing.
evtothedev··on Meditation as Wakeful Relaxation: Unclenching Smooth Muscle
This makes anecdotal sense to me. When I first started mediating (~10 years ago), my wife said to me that my face looked younger. I think it was from releasing all the startup-CTO stress that had tangled everything.
evtothedev··on The next chapter of the Microsoft–OpenAI partnership
> Microsoft’s IP rights now exclude OpenAI’s consumer hardware.

While not unexpected, this is exciting and intriguing.

And of course, looking forward to Microsoft's Zune AI.

evtothedev··on 16-inch softball
Nothing is more satisfying that hitting an old 16" softball and having the guts fly out of the skin.
evtothedev··on M5 MacBook Pro No Longer Coming in 2025
My completely uninformed bet is that with the release of open source GPT, they're planning to embed this on all laptops. That will require a huge bump in the baseline specs, and therefore you have cascading delays.
evtothedev··on Ask HN: Do you struggle with flow state when using AI assisted coding tools?
Very, very much agree with this. The nuggets of wait time are just long enough to get distracted, but not long enough to accomplish anything worthwhile.

My best "hack" for this has been to use Freedom[1] to create a blocklist of all my go-to time sucks (including, sadly, HN). This at least stops me from getting pulled in too deeply.

evtothedev··on GCP Outage
Yarn package registry also appears to be down.
evtothedev··on Universe expected to decay in 10⁷⁸ years, much sooner than previously thought
I feel like you could build an entire meditation practice around reading this article.
evtothedev··on Herb: Powerful and seamless HTML-aware ERB parsing and tooling
I hope this results in a vastly improved version of the VSCode extension vscode-erb-beautify.
evtothedev··on We switched from Next.js to Astro (and why it might interest you)
I love that they're using Kamal[1] outside of a Rails context. I've seen that promised in the docs, but hadn't encountered it in real life.

evtothedev··on Ask HN: Why is Pave legal?
FWIW, I believe that Pave works to raise engineering salaries. Every company wants to say, "We pay above the 50% mark", thereby steadily raising it over time.
evtothedev··on Pigeon towers: The rise and fall of a 17th-century status symbol (2015)
> At the time, root vegetables had not yet arrived in Britain, meaning that in winter, farmers could not rely on their usual crops to feed livestock such as pigs and cows. They were therefore bereft of beef and bacon, and turned to alternative sources of meat.

What the heck is going on in these two sentences.

First, I suspect they meant to say that potatoes hadn't yet arrived. Turnips, for example, go back for over a thousand years.

Second, is the implication they couldn't keep any livestock over winter because of a lack of root vegetables? Because what about barley? Or silage?

Makes you start to question the rest of the article.

evtothedev··on It pays to be a double major in college
I feel like being a good software engineer is itself like being a double major. You need to know code, but you also need to know the domain you're going for. And I saw this as a double major (history & biology) now running a small software company.
evtothedev··on Slack AI Training with Customer Data
You could checkout [Campfire](https://once.com/campfire). You get teh source code (Ruby on Rails) and you deploy wherever. We're running ours on a digital ocean droplet.
evtothedev··on Take a look at Traefik, even if you don't use containers
The 37Signals/Basecamp team has been working on a small, opinionated replacement for Traefik called Thruster: https://github.com/basecamp/thruster

Would be worth checking out, if you're currently considering options.

evtothedev··on Archaeologists find intact medieval gauntlet
It could very well be referring to bullets in the "pew! pew! pew!" sense.

I'd recommend The Military Revolution by Geoffrey Parker[1] if you're curious to know more about the transition from knights to guns and all the strategic ramifications.

evtothedev··on Uber is closing alcohol delivery service Drizly three years after acquistion
I am really bummed by this. It's the best way to send alcohol across state lines (i.e. gifts for clients).
evtothedev··on A modern data stack for startups (2022)
I’d be curious to know if you considered using something like Dagster for orchestrating these runs? Seems like a more natural choice over CircleCI for running what resembles a DAG. (And either way, thanks for sharing this.)
evtothedev··on Confessions of a Startup Founder's Wife
> If you are founding a startup and you have a wife, you are more likely to fail than an entrepreneur who is single. And if you have even more commitments like kids, or other dependents, your chances only get even worse.

Do you have any references to back that? Because it sure does seem like older founders-- ones more likely to be married and have kids --yield outsized returns.[1]

evtothedev··on Yarn 4.0
I am learning this just now from this comment, so I think you are right.
evtothedev··on Ancient Maya city discovered in Mexican jungle
If you like this sort of news, I strongly recommend the Ancient Beat Substack[1]. It's worth paying for, and it's something I genuinely look forward to every Friday.

evtothedev··on Skyscraper Proposed for 2700 Sloat Boulevard in Outer Sunset, San Francisco
I had the some question, but then realized I was misunderstanding the diagram. Replace the word "step" with "iteration" and it makes more sense. This is showing how the design evolved with additional constraints.
evtothedev··on Skyscraper Proposed for 2700 Sloat Boulevard in Outer Sunset, San Francisco
This proposal is like a miniature class in negotiation - and boy have they anchored high!
evtothedev··on Ask HN: Who is hiring? (January 2023)
Stealth Climate Tech Co | Founding Software Engineer | US Remote | Full-time

Residential heating and cooling accounts for a whopping 10% of all ghg emissions in the United States [1]. I’m building a company to reduce that number by 20-50%.

The beta product is a SaaS tool for a vertical that desperately needs one. Quickly, we will grow into a d2c marketplace to 'grow the pie' for decarbonization. Currently, two pilot partners are on the platform with a small number of daily transactions. We’ll come out of “stealth” as soon as I build us a public-facing website :)

The ideal candidate is a mid- or senior-level coder with strong intrinsic motivation to fight climate change. You will have an enormous amount of ownership in this role, and therefore you should care deeply about the product you’re building. Likewise, we’re going to create a culture together. I’m looking for someone who finds that exciting, and who also recognizes that it takes thoughtful effort.

I’m a sole founder, and I’ve secured a pre-seed. I have experience[2] co-founding a climate tech company, and I was the CTO & 1st hire at Snapdocs (yc w14, currently #61 on yc’s top private companies).

Presently, the stack is vanilla Ruby on Rails. I’m a strong proponent of using proven technology in order to iterate quickly - let’s save our “three innovation tokens” for when we really need them. I plan to build a distributed-first company (I love writing things down, we should all write things down). However, if you happen to be based in Chicago, and if the idea appeals to you, I’d be happy to rent a co-working space.
