exolymph··on An ESPN producer who quit because of sports gambling
> it seems really gross that there's an institution that exists seemingly purely to extract money from people who don't understand math.

Worse yet, there are a number of these institutions!

exolymph··on Scam American companies are using to manipulate ingredient lists
This is a dumb thing that HN does, certain words get stripped from titles. You can edit them back in but submitters either don't know that or just don't bother.
exolymph··on YouTuber Says Cops Visited Him After He Built a Flock-Style Camera to Track Cops
It's not like 1984 has a feel-good ending that's like "yes, fight the power, you will be successful and not ruin your own life quixotically."

I do think there is value in fighting the power... but 1984 is not a book that depicts such a choice working out well.

exolymph··on OpenAI cannot make AI safe on its own [pdf]
Here is Jasmine Wang's X thread as well: https://x.com/j_asminewang/status/2108263312291180680
exolymph··on Show HN: Pointless but mostly-exact clone of Hacker News
I think you actually achieved art project quite well with the amount of the concept that you completed, mainly because this writeup is hilarious.
exolymph··on Trump administration is suspending Microsoft from a green card program
The right policy response would be telling the firms running these programs to get fucked if they can't successfully operate while paying staff the prevailing wage that local Americans would accept.
exolymph··on What reversing, modernising old games tells us about the economic impact of AI
While it is certainly now quicker and cheaper to do this, it is not clear that maintaining a copycat app as an ongoing concern has much more business value than it ever has. Take Photoshop. Pixelmator existed (acquired by Apple eventually). Photopea is still independent. What else... Sketch? Figma and Canva for the "unicorn startup" category. Procreate serving a different chunk of users. Is there room for many more new entrants in this category to gain significant marketshare? Is the ability to dupe Photoshop the actual blocker?
exolymph··on Goodbye Google
The Book of Job addresses this. Basically, it is God's prerogative to do whatever He wants with us. You don't have to like it, but He is still in charge.
exolymph··on Socialism's Positive Rating Tops 40% for First Time
"just as easily" — hmm, no, I think not
exolymph··on Investing in mothers? The long-run impact of a universal child care
> It is a very deeply embedded assumption that women are primary parents.

Because this is typically true, even in cases where both parents work.

exolymph··on DHS 'Predictive Policing' Unit Is Analyzing Americans' Financial Habits
It's projection on your part. The general public (excluding the "very online" subset thereof) is barely even aware of mass surveillance.
exolymph··on Mark Cuban: Why US hospitals "don't know their costs"
> treat anyone who comes through the door for anything

nitpick, but it's anything imminently life-threatening (mas o menos), not anything

like if you show up in the ER with burgeoning cancer they won't provision chemo

exolymph··on Understanding ChatGPT Work
I echo this. It is not clear to me what the actual difference is.
exolymph··on How I Design with AI
Yes, as the article says:

> This should be very familiar because agents do exactly the same thing in code and plans. They love belt-and-suspenders, wrapping an extra try-catch or re-implementing the same utility over and over.

exolymph··on Y Combinator's Ankit Gupta faces backlash over H-1B comments
Yeah that one got my hackles up. The idea that America should not be run for the benefit of its citizens is uhhhh saying the quiet part out loud, I guess.
exolymph··on FDA authorizes first wearable device that monitors ketone and blood sugar levels
Thank you for sharing his memory with us.
exolymph··on Why some US restaurants are banning tips
Huh. I wish this was the norm in my area, so I didn't have to wait around for the check once I finish eating.
exolymph··on Ask HN: Why do corporate failures always seem to punish the wrong people?
The question is actually how do people get away with avoiding accountability for their actions?
exolymph··on The Amazon tax
Red Queen's race. It comes up a lot in marketing.
exolymph··on Moderna reports first positive Phase 3 for mRNA neoantigen therapy in melanoma
That is devastating. How are you doing?
exolymph··on One Oakland police officer made $490k in overtime
It's both. OPD is dramatically under-staffed, and also trash. Needs a complete overhaul.
exolymph··on ICE Shot a Journalist and Threw Him in Detention. He's Approaching 300 Days
He's funny as hell. I don't like him as a politician but he's an extremely effective showman.
exolymph··on We Tracked a Shipment of Rare Books. It Ended at an Amazon AI Training Facility
I didn't even know AWS had in-house models, that's how seldom they are mentioned.
exolymph··on Airbnb Eval-driven development: Lessons from evaluating GenAI at scale
Sidetracked by this blog being on Medium, I feel like I jumped back in time 5 years.
exolymph··on 5th Heat Dome Expands Across Europe: 40°C+ Target Western and Central Europe
You are right, except: "solutionism will fail. Magic technology will not come to save us."

You just can't know this. It might be true. But it might not. That's the thing about the future, it is fundamentally alien.

exolymph··on Study links GLP-1 drugs to bigger jump in women's employment than a degree
Women and men are not judged according to the same standards. We're not super sexually dimorphic as a species, but certainly enough to matter in terms of evolved social responses.
exolymph··on Crime Pays but Botany Doesn't
Aw man, since you're sharing this on HN, you gotta cover California!
exolymph··on Italy Blocks Reproductive Health Websites Women on Web and Women Help Women
