facile3232··on Calibrated Basic Income by Derek Van Gorder [pdf]
> There is really one ultimate question here: "Is this the best use of our tax dollars?".

The government has far more ways of financing things than taxes. I’m not sure why we refer to money this way—it’s fundamentally disingenuous. A federal budget is not the same thing as a household budget in any way.

facile3232··on Why I don't discuss politics with friends
Politics feels like an integral part of finding a partner nowadays. Which makes sense—values are important to agree upon.
facile3232··on US Administration announces 34% tariffs on China, 20% on EU
> They have both positive and negative consequences.

They have zero positive consequences for anyone but manufacturers.

facile3232··on US Administration announces 34% tariffs on China, 20% on EU
I like this take a lot. I also think that America competing on manufacturing is obviously never going to happen.
facile3232··on Search could be so much better. And I don't mean chatbots with web access
I’m surprised most manufactures even offer individual sales!
facile3232··on Search could be so much better. And I don't mean chatbots with web access
Give me a way to filter out results with ads on them please.

Edit (hn doesn’t let me post this fast): is finding places to buy shit really an issue? How many times in your life have you thought “damn I know what I want to buy, I just don’t know from which site to buy it”? That’s hard to imagine of anyone. This user story just seems like a problem made up by search indexes to court capital.

Edit2: Kagi is great. I'm a full subscriber.

facile3232··on Why is the world losing color?
> If the environment is continually shouting at you it's hard to hear the whispers, where the meaning is.

So do we currently live lives completely devoid of meaning? That's certainly what it feels like. That's certainly what the color schemes available to us connote.

So much fear of meaning we remove all meaning from our environment....

facile3232··on Why is the world losing color?
Man the world you paint is just not one I want to live in. Without color what's the damn point? I'd rather be corny than have to live like this.
facile3232··on Restructuring Announcement
You can trust me, facile3232, instead. I will improve upon all things the leader of automattic.com failed to improve upon.
facile3232··on Porting Tailscale to Plan 9
I suppose it depends on what you want from 9front. If you want a terminal with decent power management you should just buy a mac.
facile3232··on Tell HN: Announcing tomhow as a public moderator
Welcome! Good luck for a hard job.

> If you like you can experiment with this on a used laptop with supported hardware, thinkpad best.

I would avoid laptops altogether, honestly. Not a great fit.

facile3232··on Porting Tailscale to Plan 9
> You can boot a Linux kernel with an nfs root from the local machine and use headless vnc to run a browser in a vnc client window.

Not only is the VNC redirection unnecessary, so it is the entire filesystem. You could just render the vm directly to the window and boot a read only image. Plus then you don't have to deal with VNC.

facile3232··on Porting Tailscale to Plan 9
It's probably easier to just run a VM directly into a window.
facile3232··on Porting Tailscale to Plan 9
Atp it's probably easier to just smash firefox/linux into a vm
facile3232··on Porting Tailscale to Plan 9
Plan 9 gets tailscale before a browser! Somehow this makes sense

> I'm not on board with accepting AI-written articles.

I haven't been on board with the "journalism" of the last fifty years, but this hasn't exactly prompted it to improve. Newspapers still have advertisements. Subscribers still have no say over editorial staff. The board still has say over the editorial staff. It's all fucked unless we can punt private ownership out of the equation.

facile3232··on US accidentally sent Maryland father to Salvadorian prison, can't get him back
It makes sense if you follow the narrative arc of the country. The above people I mentioned slot right into the WASP trend of the ruling decorum of the country, even if the trend abandoned nominal white Anglo-Saxon protestants centuries ago.

It's the same reason why white supremacy is still relevant despite the color of skin being less important: it still ties into the impressive rhetorical power of colorism and the implicit introduction of "others" that allows the oppression of the general population for not being "civilized" enough, as if the word had any meaning to a person whose brain hadn't been turned to porridge by interaction with finance bros.

facile3232··on Glubux's Powerwall (2016)
> but it really just highlights how efficient the modern supply chain is

This "efficiency" relies on the assumption of writing off the entire battery set at sale. That's not impressive at all.

> Drawing the same image in Photoshop, or modeling and rendering it, in the same quality and resolution on the same computer, would require much more time and energy.

Right, but there was a point at which we could stop people from doing stupid shit because it's useless and they're bad with money. Now it seems we've embraced irrational and misanthropic spending as a core service.

We honestly just need to take money away from people who obviously have no clue what to do with it. Using AI seems like a perfect signal for people who have lost touch with an understanding of value.

facile3232··on 'A hostile state': Why some travellers are avoiding the US
Ah, I suppose you're correct. I can't say this is anywhere near the worst part about living here so I was surprised to see it make the list.
facile3232··on 'A hostile state': Why some travellers are avoiding the US
If a country declares war on an individual something has gone deeply wrong.

But, the idea of tariffs being anywhere near as bad as harassing visitors is ridiculous. That's a whole nother level of violation.

Canada should just be happy someone's talking about them and they didn't even have to move to LA to make it happen.

facile3232··on 'A hostile state': Why some travellers are avoiding the US
I would count the police presence as a far better reason to not visit this country than the crime. By a wide margin.
facile3232··on US accidentally sent Maryland father to Salvadorian prison, can't get him back
> with conditions that would certainly be illegal in the US itself.

Why would you assume this? We're also under investigation for human rights abuses in our prisons. AFAIK most of the rights you have as a prisoner are civil rights.

> Generating a single image at 1024x1024 resolution with Stable Diffusion on my PC takes somewhere under a minute at a maximum power draw under 500W

That's insane, holy shit. That's not even a very large image.

Apparently I was off on my estimates about how power hungry gpus are these days by an order of magnitude.

facile3232··on The Guardian flourishes without a paywall
Universities aren't exactly a great model of freedom from private interests. And it's not clear why many of them do still charge tuition—i just assumed it was some effort to emphasize classism in a world where they also want to look gracious for paying for poor people.

And believe me, for the colleges I examined this at, tuition was a rounding error compared to the return on the endowment. It is just for aesthetics of charging students in a uniquely american show of stupidity.

facile3232··on 'A hostile state': Why some travellers are avoiding the US
The tariff war? Not concerns about being detained?

facile3232··on Why America now eats a crazy number of avocados
To be fair I think the exact same thing about my own government.
facile3232··on Everything is Ghibli
"I strongly feel that this is an insult to life itself"

I emphatically appreciate Miyazaki. Even if you take him as hyperbolic, or perhaps biased due to differences in intention between the engineer team and artistry he represents, it's very positive to have strongly opinionated voices in the room that can clearly articulate why. The anecdote about pain and stiffness is succinct but exactly what is necessary to communicate specifically what is missing from the animations at hand.

However, I'm curious what he would have thought about someone playing QWOP. I wonder if he would be more fully bought into such a concept (well outside his own work of course) if such technology might emphasize appreciation for life rather than trying to mimic/bastardize/reproduce it.
