false-mirror··on Wikimedia Foundation refuses union recognition, hires union-busting law firm
In contrast, proud of EFF voluntarily recognizing its union and agreeing to a good contract for workers: https://www.eff.org/press/releases/eff-and-ifpte-local-20-at...
false-mirror··on An internal OpenAI Astra model solved 10 major open math and CS problems
I'd prefer the reverse approach. Let's value the "regular Joe" instead of cheapening everyone.
false-mirror··on BambuStudio has been violating PrusaSlicer AGPL license since their fork
> Anyone using a Bambu printer for anything sensitive was already using LAN mode or SD card for printing

I'd like to just highlight that this may soon no longer be (legally) possible thanks to state legislation. At least in California, see: https://eff.org/3DPrintCA

I encourage folks to share this and the NY campaigns (eff.org/3DPrintNY), as this new surveillance does put people/industries relying on 3D printers at risk

false-mirror··on Differences between Moon’s near and far sides linked to colossal ancient impact
You're referring to the fictitious centrifugal force [0] which is actually a minor change in inertia—very much out shined by the centripetal force of gravity. For example, on earth if you weigh 200 lbs on the North Pole, you'd weigh about 199lbs on the equator. On the moon, this tiny effect would be wiped out by gravity.

false-mirror··on Homelessness rises faster where rent exceeds a third of income (2018)
This is on its face absurd, and makes it clear you've never actually spoken with an unhoused person.
false-mirror··on EmacsConf 2021 – Live Now
What would the incentive be for a current emacs user? It's hard to imagine giving up org-mode would ever be worthwhile personally.
false-mirror··on How I Use Notion
The productive write the most about productivity, it turns out.

I'll say that for me, I hopped across note and productivity apps until I switched to emacs/org-mode. It has not made me wildly more productive, but it has (or can have) any feature other programs offer, so there is no productivity FOMO when I learn about new programs.

false-mirror··on Show HN: I made a simulator for personal finance
That is a huge "living paycheck to paycheck" upcharge!

I get the incentive, but considering how financial planning can be most vital to folks with spotty income, I'd strongly encourage you to bring the price of the monthly plan down. Or perhaps a bare-bones "free" tier folks can use between paid months?

false-mirror··on Non-Fungible Taylor Swift
A not-anti-capitalist socialist is not a socialist. TLDR: Capitalism is when production is determined by people holding capital. Socialism is when production is determined by the members of society. So the question being, should an economy be democratic or run by the rich.So long as socialists workers work democratically, there is no hypocrisy in earning money.
false-mirror··on NewPipe – ad-free, open-source Android YouTube client
On the other hand, leveraging the network effect to form a monopoly which compromises privacy and user security by coordinating with state aggressors around the globe...probably more unethical than controlling the software running on your own device?
false-mirror··on Looking back at how Signal works
They pair really well together too.

At the moment Signal really thrives at replacing texts (ephemeral one-to-one chats), while riot excels at team communication.

false-mirror··on Looking back at how Signal works
I believe the point was that phone numbers are already used as unique IDs people know intuitively. Essentially make it quick to onboard new users

Thankfully they are moving away from this with the option to use a PIN instead pf phone #. Not sure when that rolls out, but I'm v. excited for it

false-mirror··on Major union launches campaign to organize video game and tech workers
There's definitely a tension. When employers can treat employees as disposable, there is more firing and thus (sometimes) more hiring.

However, unions increase the value of jobs. Union workers enjoy a better QOL and career stability, and they can actually build a life for themselves without worrying about being fired on a whimsy.

Luckily for something like game development, it is a growing industry with a low barrier to entry. Finding a job or starting a new company is very realistic-- until the next economic downturn, which will hurt union and non-union workers alike

false-mirror··on Vox Media to cut hundreds of freelance jobs ahead of California's AB5
Vox has a union. Without freelance, the workers have more leverage over their employer.
false-mirror··on Twitter funding a team to develop an open standard for social media
because it's not built on crypto, and Jack wants to control a new coin a la Libra
false-mirror··on A Reality Check on Quantum Computers
I'm disappointed that this article doesn't answer my only real question about quantum computers: What does a reasonable expectation look like? What is the range of potential performance gains?

I understand that this is the frontier and no one has any definite answers, but I hear everything from "trivial" improvements to "insta-crack AES-256" (thousands of trillion trillion trillion trillions times faster).

Does anyone have a well informed upper/lower bound estimate?

false-mirror··on DeepPrivacy: A Generative Adversarial Network for Face Anonymization
Really cool project! I wonder how long until this sort of software is used in place of blurred-faces.

It would be really nice to shoot a public space and instead of worrying about release forms, just anonymize the footage.

false-mirror··on The New York Times Has Abandoned Liberalism for Activism
Funny, I totally agreed with you until you said far-left instead of far-right! The op-ed section is consistently to the right of Bush-era conservatism, while the non-opinion section is a sort of Biden-centrism (i.e. right of center with left of center jargon) on most issues.

At least everyone agrees NYT is a rag now

false-mirror··on California bill will drive a national debate over how to reshape labor laws
Moral relativism does not negate good/bad/right/wrong to the point that they are equivalent to "like" and "no like". That is a radical reduction, and removes the whole process of moral reasoning people use to live a moral life.

There are plenty of examples where the "right" thing to do is not pleasant, it is not socially acceptable, etc because it is instead congruent with a greater ethical structure. Please check out some moral philosophy before throwing the whole field into a bin.

false-mirror··on California bill will drive a national debate over how to reshape labor laws
Such a chillingly casual disregard for morality and ethics.
false-mirror··on Facebook Dating
Wild no one is addressing the floodgate of harassment this is opening. At least when one is harassed on another app they can just close it or delete your account and the harasser has little recourse.

Given their history, FB will likely just let this mess fester

false-mirror··on SSB Rooms: a new server type for Scuttlebutt
Meanwhile folks defend "GIMP", a confirmed sexual and ablest term, to the death.
false-mirror··on Google Legally Profits from Fraud on Its Platform
I'd love it love it love it if the richest companies had this little class solidarity. A nice change of pace.

I'd guess many anti-corporate sentiments are rising, and there's just some overlap in scheduling

false-mirror··on June was hottest month ever recorded on Earth
Remember that only 100 companies are responsible for 71% of climate change.

Obsessing with personal lifestyle changes will burn you out and have very little payoff. Sure if public transit or going vegan is easy for ya, then definitely go for it-- but save your energy for political activism imo. Power structures inform lifestyles more than the other way around.

false-mirror··on Plausible Deniability and Gaslighting in Fighting Ad Blockers
What features are missing? I use Google Docs in firefox and haven't noticed anything wrong.
false-mirror··on Nasa Says Earth Is Greener Today Than 20 Years Ago Thanks to China, India
"But we need to criticize it for the right reasons..."

Sure, but no one is criticizing china for its conservation efforts. Their political assassinations and decimation of civil liberties however...

I'm all for changing the unsustainable and ecologially detrimental status quo among western liberal democracies-- but ecofascism or eco-state-capitalism are not a viable alternatives. Literally any government can plant trees and shut down factories-- let's not use this to defend unrelated horrors.

false-mirror··on Fasting Affects the Brain
It's far healthier to skip dinner though. Breakfast is the easiest to skip (for social/practical reasons), but generally your body will digest things better when ingested earlier in the day.

An easy compromise is to get most of your calories around lunch time (or earlier).

false-mirror··on Anarchists Who Took the Commuter Train
This was a really well written piece. I was expecting a typical caricature of anarchism, but was pleasantly surprised. It is interesting how much history is forgotten in the US left
false-mirror··on Google Decides to Monetize Maps
True, but that highlights the very reason monopolies must be broken up. They will only do what is profitable, not what is best for the users.
