fatjokes··on Google's former CEO on why the company was caught off guard by OpenAI
Google sat on transformers, LaMDA for years before OpenAI. The engineers and researchers did their job. This was a case of complete strategic, i.e., leadership failure because they were more worried about getting sued.

If anything this shows you can have a good work life balance culture and deliver groundbreaking results but get it all fcked up by sht leaders.

fatjokes··on How Waymo outlasted the competition and made robo-taxis a real business
I feel like self driving cars is one area where Google's slow-and-steady culture just works better than the move-fast-and-break things culture, since the things that would break in this case are literal human bodies.
fatjokes··on Hacker has to pay Nintendo 25-30% of his salary for the rest of his life
Boycott Nintendo. Make them lose more money from this decision than they could ever hope to gain.
fatjokes··on I went to Yale—and I think two-parent families are more important than college
I think "survived" is the key word here. I don't think anybody claims it's the bare minimum and there are better solutions out there.
fatjokes··on House approves sell-or-be-banned TikTok measure
Last time this happened it was either Walmart or Oracle
fatjokes··on Object that slammed into Florida home was space junk for ISS, NASA confirms
I knew the junk wasn't Chinese because this was only reported in space.com and not across all the mainstream media.
fatjokes··on Hermit crabs are using trash as shells
Simpsons did this already.
fatjokes··on How the ultra-wealthy infiltrated anti-capitalist Burning Man
How? By buying tickets like everyone else?
fatjokes··on Foxconn's promise to invest $10B in Wisconsin is now a distant memory
Now it's tsmc's turn
fatjokes··on Spanish firm wants to kill one million octopuses a year
Must feel good to be able to cite that you weren't just correct, but hypercorrect.
fatjokes··on UK to invest £900M in supercomputer in bid to build own 'BritGPT'
They must really hate that ChatGPT spells color without a u.
fatjokes··on OpenAI sold its soul for $1B (2021)
"It's not about money. It's about a whole shit load of money."
fatjokes··on The AI hype bubble is the new crypto hype bubble
No. I've already used ChatGPT for a few practical tasks. I've never been able to do that with crypto. The most I got out of crypto was buying some, watching it go up/down in value and then selling.
fatjokes··on Bank run on Silicon Valley Bank
At that point I think he should've just bald-face deny reality: "nobody is saying we're in trouble! You're cherry-picking our enemies"
fatjokes··on 16,000 Amazon workers launched petition to fight CEO mandate to return to office
I guess Amazon won't need to hire expensive management consultants to figure out who to target for the next round of layoffs.
fatjokes··on Google stopping coding competitions
Holy shit I didn't expect an answer but yup... There he is.
fatjokes··on Did an F-22 Blow Up an Illinois Club’s Hobby Balloon?
The first shot missed one of them
fatjokes··on Microsoft's AI Bing also generated factual errors at launch
What the Bard demo did show is that Google must be genuinely panicking if it rushed out a demo like that.
fatjokes··on Microsoft's AI Bing also generated factual errors at launch
No. Microsoft has proven skills in building enterprise relationships so that CTOs force their companies to use whatever Microsoft builds no matter how crappy.
fatjokes··on Microsoft's AI Bing also generated factual errors at launch
Yeah but for Bing the fact that it wasn't porn is a step up for their rep.
fatjokes··on Neuralink transported brain implants covered in pathogens, group alleges
They're also more intelligent than dogs yet we prefer to eat one.
fatjokes··on Microsoft CEO Pretty Sure He Can Keep AI from Escaping Human Control
At least Nadella is an engineer. I'd wager he has a better sense of this than ex-management-consultant Sundar Pichai.
fatjokes··on Microsoft to demo its new ChatGPT-like AI in Word, PowerPoint, and Outlook soon
They need to call it ClippyGPT or something. The internet's head would explode.
fatjokes··on BingAI makes up an answer because it sounds more interesting than the truth
Nobody is surprised by this. The only difference is that nobody expected more from Bing so they had everything to gain and nothing to lose. At least they're known for something more than porn now, right? This is second mover advantage right here.
fatjokes··on Google shares lose $100B after Bard makes an error during a demo
I agree with this. All investors may see is a panicking company and a leader who can't inspire or control. Get rid of Sundar. He's a peacetime CEO or a COO.
fatjokes··on Google stock tumbles 8% after its Bard AI ad shows inaccurate answer
I imagine it's more likely due to the fact that the US government---both parties---has now basically declared open war on big tech, and the State of the Union was last night.

There are basically only two topics that can unite the parties: China and Big Tech.

fatjokes··on Google stock tumbles 8% after its Bard AI ad shows inaccurate answer
They invented transformers which underpins the latest craze.

Leadership and product management failed here but the researchers did their job.

fatjokes··on Google's live from Paris event private/deleted immediately
Schedule a huge announcement after a disruptive technology from a competing company right after mass layoffs when morale is probably at an all time low and everyone is one foot out the door. Clearly good decisions here.
fatjokes··on Don’t teach during code reviews
Like what? What's that Confucius saying: "I hear and I forget, I see and I remember, I do and I understand"? Nothing beats teaching using a real example that the parties are hands on with.

I get what you're saying. Delaying a milestone to have a long convo in a CR is not good prioritization. But as the technical manager it's on you to budget more time for junior devs to land their changes.

fatjokes··on I've been told (many times) that “the good employees never get laid off”
Who has ever said that? I've only ever hear management are morons and layoffs are bullshit.

You are not your job.
