favaq··on The TikTok Hearings Inspired Little Faith in Social Media or in Congress
>Asking that CEO "does TikTok access the home wifi network?" is such an incomplete question.

It's similar to what phones ask the user on behalf of the app.

I don't see what the problem is, imo it is a specific question. Almost no apps access the home wifi network, they connect to a remote server on the wan side of the network going directly through the default gateway/router, knowing nothing of the devices in the lan.

favaq··on Cloudflare disables access to ‘pirated’ content on its IPFS gateway
Perhaps this could be achieved by blacklisting the cloudflare parent certificate in your browser?
favaq··on “Can we ban iPhone in retaliation?” Chinese internet reacts to TikTok hearing
That's false. You can download the app and check yourself.
favaq··on “Can we ban iPhone in retaliation?” Chinese internet reacts to TikTok hearing
Who's going to pay for that? Not only the software, but the video hosting, transcoding, etc.

And don't tell me you can do it with p2p - the entire point of tiktok is that you can load new videos by swiping your finger. If every video takes 10 seconds to begin buffering nobody will want to use your app.

Of course they do. It's got another name (抖音) but it's basically the same exact product.
favaq··on OpenAI tech gives Microsoft's Bing a boost in search battle with Google
I'd rather install edge on my computer than type more than one sentence using my phone.
favaq··on OpenAI tech gives Microsoft's Bing a boost in search battle with Google
I signed up to the Bing GPT "beta" waitlist (I hadn't logged into my Microsoft account in years) only to be told, days later, that I had to use Edge to try it. I noped out of there.

All of reddit leans progressive, I refuse to touch it myself.
favaq··on Block loses 20% of value as Hindenburg Research alleges fraud
I suppose those who have a problem with this would rather live in a cashless society, right?
favaq··on Framework announces AMD, new Intel gen, 16“ laptop and more
That changed recently, 13th gen intel remains to be beaten.
favaq··on Jaron Lanier on the danger of AI
Funny that if you google "Who Owns the Future", the Google featured snippet says the answer is Jaron Lanier.
favaq··on Jaron Lanier on the danger of AI
Why not? EPA exists because you can't "escape" the environment. But the web? If social media is full of crap, then don't visit it - that's what I do.
favaq··on California bill would ban sales of Skittles, other ‘toxic’ snacks
At the same price tag and with the same taste and colour?
favaq··on Starbucks CEO will work a shift at the company’s cafes once a month
>obviously staff would recognize him

I think it's probable that they wouldn't.

favaq··on Acropalypse: Windows Save File API is defective by design
"How did this make it into production" is what I've felt every time I've had to use metro apps since Windows 8 was released.
favaq··on Apple further cracks down on remote work by tracking employee attendance badges
It's not a false dichotomy. You can't have an office work culture if most people choose not to go to the office.
favaq··on OpenAI’s policies hinder reproducible research on language models
>What I'm worried about is a lot of the talk about guarding models, public safety and misuse of models will end up leading every big company to pull public access of their APIs.

Look at how Facebook closed down their APIs when Cambridge-Analytica occurred.

favaq··on Women are less likely to buy electric vehicles than men
Literally any difference between men and women can be explained by BPD.
favaq··on uBlock Origin 1.48 adds readiness status, code viewer, and other fixes
Chrome will still be faster even if ublock doesn't block as much as FF does. In fact the new declarative filters will most likely be faster than the current ones.
favaq··on Google Bard waitlist
Gmail was so much better than the competition... in fact, it still is.

Bard, on the other hand...

favaq··on Web fingerprinting is worse than I thought
Yeah? If they don't know how to operate a computer then they shouldn't be operating one. The same I would feel if someone without a licence crashed their car.
favaq··on Zippyshare quits after 17 years, 45M visits per month makes no money
That would require coordination from the ad delivery networks.
favaq··on Cyclists now outnumber motorists in City of London
Then it's not wonder people would rather cycle. What a deceptive headline.
favaq··on Altstore: Home for apps that push the boundaries of iOS
A poor argument? To me, as a final user, it's the greatest one.

>Because according to the typical regulator it’s bad when others impose limits, but not when they impose limits.

I agree, regulators shouldn't exist.

favaq··on Cyclists now outnumber motorists in City of London
Didn't they make it very, very expensive to drive in the City of London?
favaq··on Sucralose is a negative modulator of T cell-mediated responses in mice
I wish I could understand that article, but it just doesn't have enough emojis :(
favaq··on Altstore: Home for apps that push the boundaries of iOS
Spotify and YouTube premium for free, in my case.
favaq··on Fake Samsung 980 Pro SSDs are spreading around
Someone who buys an evo pro knows to install magician, at least to update the firmware for the first use, or so i hope - it would be like buying a high-end nvidia and using the drivers from windows update.
favaq··on To ensure vaccines work properly, men should get a good night’s sleep
His message, at least the way I read it, is a message of love for men. It's sad that you have seen hatred in it. Perhaps you should reflect.
favaq··on The dark defaults of Microsoft Edge
Then don't use the software, you can't just sign a contract and then back off because you didn't have time to read it before you signed it.
