ferongr··on Ask HN: Which TV do you recommend for privacy?
The battery drain issue looks like more of an issue with suboptimal power management in Graphene OS than Play Services. Or the sandbox interacts with them in a weird way, resulting in some kind of loop or bug that keeps the CPU alive.
ferongr··on Disney Raising Prices Days After Confirming Ads Will Now Show Up on Every Tier
Not only you'll be paying for low quality Disney slop, but you'll also be paying to be advertised to. I now think even less of people that keep paying for subscriptions like Disney+.
ferongr··on Hacker leaks 281 GB of data from Germany's far-right AfD party
Probably because the leaker is actually the state, and in case the fact is discovered, they want to be protected against privacy violation lawsuits.
ferongr··on Citroen revives the 2CV for an electric age
Ami-style cars are toys for "rich" people. No lower-class or lower middle class person who can only buy one car is going to get it, since its compromises are too great; tiny range, lack of AC, no suburban or highway capability, can't fit a stroller or child seat. That person will inevitably get either something like a C3/C3 Aircross/Clio/Sandero or a Chinese EV like the 20k euro Geely E2 or Aion UT or 16K Leapmotor T03/B10 or 18K Dolphin Surf.

An upper-middle class or "rich" person will get one, as a third car for errands in the historic center (doesn't wanna mingle with the poors on public transit), as a first car for his 16 year old brat (a travesty that law allows it) or a runabout for his wife that has old her car license due to drunk driving.

ferongr··on HMD Touch 4G
This is nothing new. It's a dumb-phone with a touchscreen. There were quite a few examples back in the day in the late 00s.
ferongr··on Volkswagen planning to cut up to 100.000 jobs globally
>Tesla is screwed.

Deja-vu

ferongr··on The shingles vaccine may reduce the risk of dementia
Dementia largely affects people on a pension, and not working adults contributing to the pyramid scheme.
ferongr··on Xsnow "protestware" in Debian
It seems like the "we support the current thing" crowd disagrees with you.
ferongr··on Nobody understands the point of hybrid cars [video]
You'd only invalidate the warranty of the speaker itself. Good riddance.
ferongr··on Nobody understands the point of hybrid cars [video]
A few drops of superglue into the speaker should work wonders. Probably very easy to DIY on your driveway in a few minutes.
ferongr··on Distributing Mac software is increasing my cortisol levels
You won't appear as hip and fashionable amongst your CA/SV peers lugging a "generic" laptop around.
ferongr··on Internet Archive Switzerland
Looks like an "organization" tailor made to be awarded EU funds for their "mission".
ferongr··on Running Tesla Model 3's computer on my desk using parts from crashed cars
>then I needed to find a brake controller that can work with the higher voltage (14.4v vs the normal 12v)

Put a voltmeter on the battery terminals of a regular car at 2000rpm and note the voltage. You'd be surpised (the alternator can produce as high as 15V on some cars).

ferongr··on Microsoft's "fix" for Windows 11
Breaking up Apple would be glorious. Great hardware without an Orwellian OS on top.
ferongr··on Honda is killing its EVs
All 800V eGMP Hyundai/Kia cars suffer from ICCU issues.
ferongr··on Honda is killing its EVs
Until the ICCU fails, at which point you're toast.
ferongr··on Tesla Recalls Almost 13,000 EVs over Risk of Battery Power Loss
The vacuum reservoir of the brake booster in cars with vacuum servo brakes (whether vacuum is generated by the engine or an electric pump is irrelevant) stores enough energy for 3-4 full applications of the brakes.
ferongr··on Internet's biggest annoyance: Cookie laws should target browsers, not websites
Please post some judicial decisions regarding your claim.
ferongr··on Volkswagen gates a new vehicle's full horsepower behind monthly subscription
Common in ICE cars oo, mostly turbo ones. The difference between the 100HP model and the 120HP model is only an ECU map.
ferongr··on Helsinki records zero traffic deaths for full year
Service workers in coffee shops stand all day here in enlightened Europe too.
ferongr··on Bento: A Steam Deck in a Keyboard
All this effort wasted on using a really bad keyboard as a base.
ferongr··on The European public DNS that makes your Internet safer
I'd like to use it because I support the creator's stated mission, but for me, performance seems very slow and unreliability is lacking

ferongr··on Tiny vanes glued to planes promise big savings for US Air Force
Hooks, holes in the backing plate, stamped/cast dimples, welded wire-mesh for the backing material to adhere to.
ferongr··on Tiny vanes glued to planes promise big savings for US Air Force
Pads were the friction material is solely using glue to adhere to the backing plate are generally either very cheap aftermarket replacements or the OEM cheapening out.
ferongr··on Apple and Google deliver support for unwanted tracking alerts in iOS and Android
This is a 2019 article with figures from that time. So it's wildly out of date.
ferongr··on How the California forest that was Endor in 'Return of the Jedi' was obliterated (2022)
No, they're cheap Chinese honeycomb paper and low density particle board.
ferongr··on Berlin's techno scene added to Unesco intangible cultural heritage list
On the other hand, normies do ruin everything.
ferongr··on Apple's bad faith 27% tax on web purchases
If there was a concept of corporate death penalty, Apple would be one of my top picks for its application.
ferongr··on Nintendo Switch's iGPU: Maxwell Nerfed Edition
Nah, with equivalent graphical settings and resolution, the PC would manage at least 3 times the framerate.

Unsteady 30FPS with terrible frame pacing is nothing that consoles can brag about.
