ffsm8··on Ask HN: Are you tired too in this AI era?
The others frequently go into prod with rigorous review too, so that hasn't really changed between pre ai and today from my perspective.
ffsm8··on Ask HN: Are you tired too in this AI era?
This is becoming cyclical, did you forget what this comment chain went about?

The discussion went from tests being written by ai, to nobody actually reviewing the tests, to the claim that given those circumstances, you wouldn't notice that the tests may not tests anything anymore because of mocks.

My statement was merely pointing out that your previous comment was groundless because they still would've found out about those bugs when they went live.

ffsm8··on 'Elite North Korean hackers' blamed for $6.3B Binance hack

ffsm8··on Ask HN: Are you tired too in this AI era?
Haha, I have been building my own software factory exactly like that. I consider it the ultimate factory game- but I sure as fuck would not want that to be my dayjob... Though I'm aware it will likely be that in a few years when the industries in my nation normalize around that.
ffsm8··on Ask HN: Are you tired too in this AI era?
You seem to forget what tests are.

They're representative of scenarios which your application can enter.

So if the tests were mocked and a bug went live he'd still notice, after all it means your software behaved incorrectly and now you gotta clean up the pieces.

ffsm8··on I went to Mexico to test-drive the cars Americans can’t buy
Does that matter if there literally aren't any spare parts to buy? That was kinda his point I feel like
ffsm8··on Zero click, silent, remote Android DoS
Huh, but then it's neither remote nor zero click if you need to locally install malware?

Or did I misunderstand you and can you input any phone number to cause this issue? If so that would sound more like a carrier issue then a android issue to me

ffsm8··on Wealth Inequality in America drawn to scale
I don't think forcing majority stakeholders to sell their stocks over the years would have your proposed effect. The position of power here is mostly with the CEO of those companies. And that's not gonna change with this scheme.

Honestly, there isn't a clean solution to this problem- or at least none that doesn't come with unpredictable consequences. I think everyone can agree that companies growing too large inevitably become harmful for the society they're enabled by, but there are no previously established solution we can reach for... And every decision you can make will have trade-offs. Also, were pretty late game into free market capitalism. Any changes to the status quo will dis-/advantage someone, and they will utilize the tools available to them to stop you. So such deep cutting changes are beyond unlikely without first descending into complete chaos. Which would likely be worse for the majority of people...

ffsm8··on Is my data used for model training?
Anthropics models wouldn't exist if they honored such promises. So yeah,

> The most common feedback on these posts is always "what did you expect?"

Is completely spot on. It's highly entertaining to me that some people can't wrap their head around that.

ffsm8··on Roblox downloaded 145GB models from us (including adult content) without asking
> Urheberrecht explicitly states, that downloading something is legal

Technically right with your phrasing, but wrong considering the context.

That exception is explicitly about the fact that eg pictures served on a website will be copied to the local cache and can still be shown without violating it. But besides that, nobody argued that the download itself was the license violation.

If Roblox only downloaded and then deleted it without using it in any way, they'd not have violated the license. Was that the point you were making? If so okay, that's true but from my perspective a pretty stupid view. Surely you're aware that they didn't?

ffsm8··on Roblox downloaded 145GB models from us (including adult content) without asking
Just to make sure I understand you right: the argument is that

Acteur a has a no permissive copyright

Acteur b has a non-commercial copyright on a model that infringes on a's non permissive copyright

Acteur c now can freely use it commercially, because b's copyright notice is invalid as it was never in a position to grant a permissive license

The stuff you learn on HN is truly breathtaking.

Thanks for clearing that up, that opens up a lot of avenues for future developments

ffsm8··on Roblox downloaded 145GB models from us (including adult content) without asking
Til you can download something without copying said something.

Wouldve been great to know for people that have been found guilty after downloading illegal and unlicensed content.

Fyi, the nation you mentioned (Germany) adheres to a much stricter concept called Urheberrecht. Under this regulation, you're actually in even more legal trouble. Though Roblox ain't German, so kinda irrelevant, admittedly

ffsm8··on Roblox downloaded 145GB models from us (including adult content) without asking
i see. as long as i can download Software that is made available for free for students its completely legal to do so and use them commercially as a non-student, after all its freely downloadable.

good thing you explained how copyright works legally, almost spend my money unnecessarily.

ffsm8··on Roblox downloaded 145GB models from us (including adult content) without asking
Were they used in a commercial context when a commercial entity downloaded it?

If yes, they were in violation of the license. Fyi, that's explicitly stated in the article we're commenting on.

ffsm8··on Roblox downloaded 145GB models from us (including adult content) without asking
They ignored the licenses, so kinda moot point you're making.
ffsm8··on UK to charge universities $1,200 per international student
> Germany provides free university education even for foreigners, for instance)

Fwiw, Germany is also taking a big chunk ontop.

If you add taxes taken from your wage and VAT, forced social security payments etc all up, you'll end with a rough taxation of ~50% in UK. Of you do the same in Germany you end up over 60%, often nearing 70% unless you're a single income household with kids (they lower the tax burden a lot through deductions. Obviously still expensive, but your social contributions go down a lot.)

ffsm8··on Anthropic S-1
piagent vs Claude code are completely different target audiences...

If you drew a venn diagram of their prospective users, the overlap ain't gonna be big. I get that they're both harnesses, but claude is clearly trying to optimize for the agentic development loop, while piagent is more about hand holding - unless you add the agentic features yourself (which is pretty easy, but again completely different target audience to cc).

If you compare to API prices the value difference is not as big.

The anthropic sub is likely still subventioned with VC money. So this may not even be available in 2 years.

But yeah, with current sub prices/budget... It's hard to go with anyone else unless you're rich.

ffsm8··on Hacker leaks 281 GB of data from Germany's far-right AfD party
Great, you found a poll made by a extreme left "journalist" tabloids asking their readers wherever AFD should be banned.

That's precisely the reason why it's so hard to interface with people like you seem to be. You've completely lost touch with reality.

The next time you're interacting with someone on the lower income percentage ask them if they think it should be banned.

You probably know the answer, just aren't willing to admit to it.

The AFD Party members don't even believe the BS they're talking about themselves. They just say whatever they think their voters want to hear. Just look at what weidel etc is doing vs what she's preaching.

So if you spend any amount of time thinking about that fact you should be able to realize that what the AFD is running on is something a big chunk of the population desires. And alienating those by removing whom theyre voting for will end in a complete disaster.

Claiming the opposite is just putting your head into the sand because you cannot face reality, like so many on the left continue to do...

ffsm8··on Hacker leaks 281 GB of data from Germany's far-right AfD party
The majority of Germans do not support a ban. It's the completely brainrotten and extreme left that supports it.

The reality is that something between 20-40% voted for them. While there are problematic elements in the AFD, and they're lying populists, they're ultimately just morally bankrupt profiteers. Basically the same as linke and greens, just targeting different demographics. You're probably just the target demographic of those parties, hence your frankly insane view that banning the most popular single party would be a good idea. It would not. It would massively exaggerate the issue and further alienate even bigger chunks of the population.

The issues the AFD are raising need to be resolved. That's the only way to calm things down, but the established parties seem to inept to deliver on that, hence the increasingly problematic situation.

ffsm8··on Swedish government offices to ban ChatGPT and Claude
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/CLOUD_Act

You say that but that's not reflected in the law, and historically the us government has repeatedly created such sweeping surveillance systems. It's highly unlikely they only made it legal, and aren't using it sweepingly considering theyre on record doing so before it was legalized through the act before too...

And as that's international law... It's always kinda a coin toss whenever anyone actually pays it any attention. No real recourse if violated after all.

ffsm8··on OpenShell – A safe, private runtime for fleets of autonomous AI agents
Don't worry, is gonna be soon. After all, fleets are way too small scale. Next week we'll be orchestrating ... What was the military term for a group of fleets again? Cohorts? Armada? Legions?

After that we can segment then into civilizations! The [?] processing unit is the limit!

ffsm8··on EA is shutting down BioWare
hmm, i can only say that i disagree with that sentiment. Storyline wise ME1 is the only one that hardly progressed anything, but that itself is by design of the lore. Also I dont think that a sequel was actually planned for ME1 (hence the very light touch for an actual overarching storyline)

ME1 the Reapers are unknown, they fight via subterfuge while utilizing the Geth and Indoctrination. Only one Reaper is in the Milky Way, and only for oversight. The game ends with the DLC in which the protagonist annihilates the main Relay which the Reapers wouldve used for their invasion.

ME2 starts with the overseeing Reaper killing the protagonist. Who is the nrebuild by a clandestine human supremacist organization. Its central theme is trying to rally a defense against the upcoming invasion. It ends with the "Suicide mission" against the overseeing Reapers base to forestall the creation of a Human Reaper. That was actually the first part where I got completely stumped back then: why does a human reaper matter?. It was a very good scene, but lore wise it was very confusing to me.

ME3 starts with the arrival of the Reapers and tells the story of their loosing battles, until the final attempt building on the previous cycles survivors magnus opus.

You could've split ME3 into two parts for sure, former being the loosing battle lines and the third one the final conclusion via the Ansible (i think thats what it was called?) - but I feel that last installment wouldve been too little content, if attempted. It wouldve been a good choice as a seperate DLC however, so that the main game ended with the discovery of the schematics and the DLC being about the final desperate struggle to get the resources before all is lost in the inevitable defeat.

ffsm8··on EA is shutting down BioWare
Yeah I just replayed ME through the LE and it was just how I remembered from my original playthroughs back when the games were released:

ME1 nailing the story building but being pretty slow overall. Combat feeling very dated. (8/10 overall) ME2 nailing the combat, streamlining the overall game but sacrificing some of the exploration spirit - but very well done from a lore perspective because the urgency of the crisis builds over the game - leaving the protag less time for exploration. (10/10 overall) Then ME3... A pale imitation of ME2. From a player perspective it feels like the general storyline was still from the same author of the ME2 game, because you can see the urgency picking up more and more until the final conclusion. But the execution is really really lacklustre. (Maybe 6-7/10)

It was a decent enough conclusion, but overall pretty mid . Most definitely this was the first time you could feel the cultural shift in the production and it's impact in the product.

Political correctness kept sneaking in. The objectively horrible things you could do in both previous installments were toned down a lot. You're no longer deciding to decimate populations, shoving people out of windows etc. Still some questionable things, but clearly with a lot less ... Edge.

And I'm seriously surprised this thread considers DA:I good.

I gave it multiple attempts, and never even got further then maybe 5h before dropping it. Honestly, DA2 was already such a massive step down in vibes, clearly aimed at what's today being called "modern audiences", there were still some quiet extreme scenes in it, but it felt completely artificial to me compared to the ruthlessness in DA:O I also hated how the gameplay went from pretty down to earth to complete implausibility.

Like in DA:O people were still limited by their physical bodies. In DA2 you get rogues jumping gigantic distances etc. it felt like it took too much inspiration from MMOs at the time, sacrificing it's wonderful world it built up. But a more cynical view is probably that they just hired people that previously worked on other fantasy games, consequently importing the same fantasy settings of their previous projects.

And inquisition... Again I was unable to finish it to date because I just cannot get myself to keep playing... It's just no spirit to it at all. It'd say it's work by a amateur that's trying their best to imitate a previous work, and failing.

ffsm8··on AfD Leak: What 421,179 Hacked Emails Show about the German Far Right
You're looking at it from a perspective that's not shared by the population.

The AFD is not extreme right. Not even right wing. The party program itself doesn't even have a single real action plan. They didn't plan to do anything because they know they can just say $whatever and never actually need to deliver on anything because of the stupidity of the established parties.

Consequently, every issue we've had to date can be utilized to prove that they're the only party trying to help the population and only get sabotaged by the establishment that doesn't try to address any of the real issues that people both see and feel in their daily life.

The only thing this stupid dump will tell prospective voters is that there are actual Nazis in the AFD, which doesn't make them unique at all. There are some on CDU and SPD too. However, most of those message which the AFD will now use themselves over the next weeks is to show how there were taken out of context, and surely bad taste but just sarcasm/humor that was phrased for internal communication.

I feel like I'm explaining the basics of the basics here, do you unironically think this is going to be a hit for the AFDs popularity?

If so I can only tell you that you're so politically captured to have left your common sense behind. Precisely the issue the green/linke also have.

I say this but have voted for Piraten in 2013 Greens 2017 and 2021.

I just couldn't keep voting for them because just how inept they've proven themselves.

Now I'm literally angry, because who can I even vote for at this point? People that have proven themselves both incapable of their jobs and unironically put the CumEx specialist in the highest position in the government? The FDP which is so inept they don't even realize they're sabotaging themselves with their betrayal of the coalition? CDU, the most corrupt party that has ever existed? Seriously, nobody's is left. And again they don't even comprehend that their Brandmauer is literally an advertisment for AFD. Im just completely estranged.

ffsm8··on Linux 7.3
You explicitly stated as such, I just want to emphasize it again: it only breaks dynamically linked libraries, which - from a stability point of view - is an antipattern anyway.

Almost always youre better off producing a bundle which has everything (excluding the runtime) included... Or just use better languages which categorically don't even have this scenario, eg golang, Java, rust, etc pp

fwiw, i think literally all largish corporations have been like that pre AI too? i can gurantee you that nobody understands how the whole system works at all of my last workplaces either...

people just know their small part and hope for the best - so from a devils advocate pov, its already been proved that its sustasinable. now wherever its _worth it_ is another question. large employers are - on average - incredibly wasteful with their resources. not to anthropics degree, but still.
