fictionfuture··on The Limits of Rationality
Nietzsche discusses this at length (the author mentions Jung, but Jung borrowed heavily from Nietzsche in this regard)…

Nietzsche believed that the best decisions weren’t the most rationale ones but the ones that were “life furthering.”

However he believed rationality is preferable to idealism. Therefore, best to first deal with reality, learn rationality, then make decisions with your feet on the ground

fictionfuture··on Newsom just signed California pay transparency bill
This is scary for employers and might be the most misguided move California’s made yet. Going to be a “whooshing” sound of companies headed East…

Idealism should not trump rationality; I cannot believe this actually passed into law

fictionfuture··on Checkmate: Cheating Detection
I'd be checking his shoes... https://incoherency.co.uk/blog/stories/sockfish.html
fictionfuture··on Success stories are propaganda (2017)
There is a worthwhile premise behind the title of this article. Success stories are generally fluff designed to rewrite history and control a desired narrative.

Most the real reasons for success are taboo, boring and too technical to talk about, e.g. "we got massive SEO traffic through user-generated content and 10x'd traffic in 2 months"..

fictionfuture··on The Great Crypto Grift May Be Unwinding
Bitcoin’s “killer app” and underlying utility is illegal transactions. Money laundering and drug purchasing. As long as the government allows it; crypto will have a base value in that.
fictionfuture··on The Great Crypto Grift May Be Unwinding
Only thing that revived crypto was all the free biden-bucks they printed. Free cash needs somewhere to go.
fictionfuture··on When Did the Medieval Period End?
While some might disagree, many historians associate Petrarch’s rediscovery of Cicero’s letters as the start of the renaissance and the end of the Middle Ages.

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Petrarch

I’d recommend anyone study Cicero as he was a sole source for many of the “best practices” stolen from antiquity; his writings are the basis for the US government (for example)

fictionfuture··on Give me back my monolith (2019)
To be fair, most micro service setups and tutorials have been overly complicated; however, let’s agree that distributed workloads and architecture are superior in a number of ways.

Generally, when people discuss going back to the “monolith” they just haven’t found the right distributed architecture.

fictionfuture··on I stopped advertising and nothing happened
I run analytics company and (off the record) we detect roughly 75% of paid traffic as bots, w 50% of the remaining in iframes
fictionfuture··on Leaving California? A 2022 guide to what state is best to move to
South Orange county is where people should go; if taxes aren't the reason for leaving ...
fictionfuture··on Royal Society cautions against censorship of scientific misinformation online
Google and twitter made the election go the way they wanted via selective display of information.

Second, mail in ballots for sure won Democrats the election.

No fraud? They changed the rules so they could win

fictionfuture··on Half of the female STEM faculty in the US were hired over more qualified men
So ... Sexism that favors women isn't sexism?
fictionfuture··on Groups never admit failure
I think you misunderstood his point.

He's making an observation about religious tendencies and belief systems within groups.

Debates within the Linux ecosystem aren't fundamental challenges to it's ethos

fictionfuture··on Most cryptocurrency trades may be people buying from themselves
Finally someone noticed. This has been obvious especially in the NFT space.
fictionfuture··on Terraform vs. AWS CloudFormation
I had this same bug!! Cost us like $1000 before we fixed it;
fictionfuture··on Migrating to Next.js from Create React App
Next is nice and all but FactorJS V3 is looking awesome. Check it out if you haven't seen and don't mind Vue
fictionfuture··on Show HN: Darwin – Free website analytics (+more) for Startups
Interesting. The analytics space is definitely evolving quickly.

Personally Im ready for a change with the introduction of GA4 (which I feel is difficult to use) and nearly all other providers costing like $1k+ a month. Will definitely check this out in our next project.

fictionfuture··on Show HN: GraphQL Centaur – GraphQL Generation tool for MongoDB Stucco
Does GraphQL really make sense with MongoDB?

I love MongoDB but GraphQL is being used in many cases where it adds zero value, only another layer of complexity and abstraction.

fictionfuture··on Prettier 2.0 – Opinionated JavaScript formatter
Deno will fail at this, they are fixing something that isn't broken.
fictionfuture··on Perch: a really little CMS
check out FactorJS
fictionfuture··on All I want for Christmas is to sign in with Apple
Using a service for sign-in without making users create an email/password login is a usually a mistake.

Avoid this lock-in, and own your own users. Email and password is still the best and simplest way to go.

fictionfuture··on TextMate 2.0
Textmate could do text wrapping better than all the other editors combined. Miss that feature.
fictionfuture··on The End of the Roman Empire Wasn’t That Bad
Agreed, most people who study this subject for it's intellectual purposes agree as well
fictionfuture··on The End of the Roman Empire Wasn’t That Bad
The fall of Rome led to a power vaccum that was filled by organized religion.

Religion then outlawed science and philosophy (competing ideology)... Which led to the dark ages.

Yes, it was that bad.

fictionfuture··on Bezos Investigation Says the Saudis Obtained His Private Data
Succession in monarchies is a tricky subject, ask the Roman Empire.

Family based succession, more or less provides a clear lineage and plan. Otherwise, military gets involved.

fictionfuture··on Debunking the Capitalist Cowboy
This article is garbage, and the believe system behind it is the most dangerous thing to modern society.

Imagine a world where meritocracy is demolished; in favor of 'equality.' Being 'good' or making customers happy doesn't matter anymore.

Can we please unite behind things like hard-work, quality and discipline to fight off this thinking?

fictionfuture··on Why I turned down my Y Combinator interview
If you raise the expectation is you will spend that money in a certain timeframe (thats why you're raising)

Ultimately, the best analogy is baseball. Raising money is like going for home runs, higher chance of striking out.

fictionfuture··on Why I turned down my Y Combinator interview
I agree. To support it, my first company was bootstrapped and did around $10m in revenues but then was ultimately killed by competition and ecosystem issues.

I pocketed most this money (after taxes) ... had I raised money I'd be broke right now...

fictionfuture··on Crypto Market Has Bottomed (According to Novogratz)
Crypto is by-and-large only good for illegal transactions; same as BitTorrent is only good for illegal downloads.

Anyone talking about other "applications" doesn't understand the way things currently work.

People with this correct opinion might get censored by the Inquisition but we have only been right so far...

fictionfuture··on Crypto Market Has Bottomed (According to Novogratz)
Bitcoin isn't used as a Fiat hedge. It's used for laundering, buying drugs and other illegal activity. That's all that is keeping it alive
